DC's Kevin Payne is looking high and low for a new coach.
Some more news has come out today about DC United's on-going coaching search to replace Tom
Soehn. Yesterday we mentioned that Richie Williams is out of the running but a few more names have
emerged thanks to Steve Goff's latest report this afternoon.
Congrats to RSL and Nick Rimando, one of my favorite players in MLS, for reasons that I have never
been able to articulate. I just like the guy. And big props to Cletus on winning his one and only
MLS ring. Who would have thought that 10 years ago? And also big props to Jason Kreis.
Ukraine and Greece head into the 2nd leg encounter after a goalless draw at Athens. Ukraine's'
captain Andry Shevchenko knows that this is the last chance for him for a final World Cup
appearance and it's the best occasion to earn the qualification berth in front of the home fans. A
nerve tingling encounter awaits the [.
keano's influence tonight will be in the spotlight.
With Pavlyuchenko out of the picture and probably the first player moving this winter transfer
window, eyes now move away from his input in our cup campaign; (which notably last season, included
a spectacular finish against Manchester United).
The undefeated Akron Zips moved a step closer to a perfect season on Saturday, scoring a 1-0
victory against Tulsa in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals to secure a berth in the College Cup
semifinals, set for Friday in Cary, North Carolina.
Defender Kofi Sarkodie provided the winner for the Zips, who will now face North Carolina in the
national semifinal.
Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has been ruled out for at least a month with a medial ligament tear
of his right knee.
The England international sustained the injury in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Johnson will have to see a specialist again before a specific timescale will be put on how long he
will be out of action for.
The Fire head into their final game of the season needing a result to assure a berth in the MLS Cup
playoffs. Of course, the club can still back into the playoffs with a loss -- if either D.C.,
Colorado, or Dallas fail to win -- but with the...

Thierry Henry's despicable handball in today's deciding World Cup qualifier against the Republic of
Ireland was probably the biggest soccer fraud since Diego Maradona's infamous "hand of God" act in
1986. The stakes, then as now, are massive: a quarterfinals berth at the World Cup then, a spot in
next year's South Africa tourney now.
a good player to be linked to. maybe.
We're doing well. We're fourth in the league with a few weeks before the winter transfer window
and Christmas. But it's hard not to feel that there's a anxiousness about all of it, and that with
our current lack of creativity and consequential goals mean that as fans we always feel that we're
surfing the crest of a wave comprised of excrement.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will grace World Cup 2010 after
all. Nervous chatter of the two greatest players on the planet missing next summer's showpiece
evaporated when Portugal and Argentina finally squeezed through the qualifiers at
the last hurdle.
Could this be the season that London stakes claim to three of the top four Premiership spots?
Chelsea, tops with 36 points, Tottenham, and Arsenal along with Manchester United comprise the
current Premiership top four.
Chelsea at this point seems a given for the top four, while Tottenham and Arsenal face determined
fights from the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool as the clubs race to the
finish line.

The best way to sum up the action this past weekend is more of the same. The top 4 remain the
top 4 (with one switch) and those looking in danger of relegation still look in danger of
relegation. However, a few major lessons were learned this week on (and off) the pitch.
Ireland wants a World Cup field of 33. The Republic wants an honorary berth due to the legendary
Henry hand-swat assist.
If the Irish can come up with a tournament that fits an odd number of teams, I'd consider not
laughing at them so much.
Nope, still hysterical.
Sure they think they were wronged, but I'm pretty sure Ireland got an extra point or two in
qualifying for an equally abhorrent handball decision a while back.

Porto thrashed a hopeless Atletico Madrid side who managed to fall to bottom of the table and
miss out on a Europa League berth.

Betfair is the official Manchester United betting partner and we here at Red Rants have
partnered with them to offer a free £25 bet when you register. Unlike other betting sites,
Betfair allows you to place bets when the game is running and choose the odds at which you want to
play. What allows you to do these things is you're betting against other fans, not the bookie, so
if you want better odds than are currently available, for example, you can place an order for a
better price (but bear in mind that if your price is unrealistic your bet is unlikely to be
accepted).
I was intrigued by a headline of MLS's official blog, MLS Insider, last evening: MLS Insider
Exclusive: 2010 Generation adidas Players Revealed:
Notice the time on the post, December 18, 2009 7:32 PM. The content of the post was that Akron
sophomore Teal Bunbury and former Rutgers player Dilly Duka had signed Generation adidas contracts
with MLS, and that Akron junior Blair Gavin was expected to sign a GA deal.
The end of the 1990's saw the club back in Division 1 after clawing their way out of Division 2 at
the first attempt following their disastrous relegation the season before.
As the noughties(!?) arrived, City stood in first position in the table with a four point lead of
Huddersfield, a surprising position as there were no great expectations of promotion that season -
with perhaps a play-off berth a hopeful aim at outset.
