5. Pat Noonan - He makes up for his lack of pace with excellent vision and passing. He's probably
the United States' best striker-in-the-hole and makes Taylor Twellman and the rest of his
Revolution teammates better players.
4. Ricardo Clark - labeled as a defensive midfielder, he seems to be pretty good on attack and on
the flanks as well.
Certainly it was a win on foreign soil, but this was a very poor effort from a young US side.
Though they didn't get much possession or many opportunities in the first quarter of the game, the
US players were patient and executed a good game plan against an athletic team at altitude. The
goal was against the run of play but very well taken from a difficult angle, and the US played much
better
Well, the summer has come and mostly gone. We still have the U-17 World Cup to get out of the way,
but with the senior and U-20 sides involved in three major tournaments his summer, we got a better
picture of what the national program looks like heading into qualification for the most important
tourney of all - the World Cup. In this first of a five-part series, we'll take a look at the five
players who surprised or impressed me the most - the five who "planted their spears" and gave "fist
shaking performances" in the parlance of everybody's favorite Geordie.
Benny Feilhaber's move to EPL newbie is complete after he received his work permit from the UK Home
Office.
He will arrive in England tomorrow and under go his medical before finalizing and signing his new
contract.
The most interesting part about this whole process has to do with his work permit, which looked
unlikely at first.
I got to watch this match for a second time last night and per usual, I saw some things that I
failed to notice before. The thing that stood out for me most is Benny Feilhaber's performance,
which left much to be desired and seemed quite uncharacteristic for the twenty-two-year-old.
Usually calm, cool, and collective, I thought he was easily put off of his game by the Swedes,
turning over the ball abnormally frequent and being ineffective on the whole.
Derby County might not have got the first American they went after, however it looks like they
might land their second as Mr. Gold Cup winning goal himself, Benny Feilhaber is close to closing a
transfer deal to the club.
"We are very close," he told American Soccer Daily on Tuesday morning. "The basics have
been agreed, and now we get into the details.
There's some really interesting stuff floating around that I think you should know about:
- First and foremost, Benny Feilhaber is close to a deal with EPL newcomers Derby County. Seems as
if County has a quota of one token American for the coming season, and by God, they're determined
to fill it. This, however sudden, is a great chance for Feilhaber to see significant first-team
minutes in the EPL immediately.
Benny Feilhaber has been cleared to play for Derby County by British authorities. He could make his
debut tomorrow against Derby County.
Despite all of the possession, all of the chances created, and a generally impressive outing from
the "B" squad, the US manages to lose again by a significant margin. And why? Because we seem to
have a squad-wide case of finishing-itis, with Ricardo Clark being the only one seemingly immune to
the disease. With the loss, the US is all but guaranteed another three-and-out in a major
tournament as they will have to absolutely punish Colombia by a big margin (unlikely given the
state of US shooting) and hope for favorable results elsewhere in order to advance.
The US finish off their waning from the homeland suckle tour with a trip across the pond to
Scandinavian Sweden. This will be their fourth straight match away from the crib with the previous
three being unceremonious defeats in Copa America. Unfortunately, this match will not be much
easier.
On the good side, the US will be featuring a predominantly European-based squad, as only four of
the nineteen selected will come from the MLS.
A humble reference to the popular segment of Encyclopedia Dramatica. Good, old fashioned sophmoric
humor, that site.
Anyways, pop quiz. In 2003, who became a star midfielder for the UCLA Bruins after being accepted
as a walk-on?
Benny Feilhaber.
Who did the same thing for the Bruins' defense in 1996?
Jimmy Conrad.
- Benny Feilhaber appears closer to moving to Premier League newbies Derby County. Feilhaber made
only nine appearances for Hamburg last year, and must be considered a hot commodity after his
excellent summer with the US National Team. Should Derby sign a cultured midfielder like Feilhaber,
maybe, just maybe they can escape the drop in the Premier League.

----Arsenal vs Manchester United 2-2: It was the game of the weekend and could
have been a title decider, it was a good game, both teams knew what was at risk. Gallas scored an
own goal to give Man U the lead, that has to be horrible for a player. Man United were very lucky
even though they had a good game, Gallas scored and own goal in the 45th min, then Fabregas scored
in the 48th min, then Ronaldo scored in the 82nd min and then Gallas scored in the 90th min.
Benny Feilhaber has won a special place in my heart. Full match summary later tonight, after my
date.
Easily one of the best USA v. Mexico matches in years, arguably the best Nats performance of the
Bradley era. No matter how you slice it, Bradley's got his first taste of silver and now has Copa
action to wash it down with.
Yanks Abroad , Fullback, Goff, Ives, and QuarterVolley.
I'll get right into some player ratings (out of 10):
Howard - 9
Timmy has none of the calming veteran tranquility that Keller possessed but all of the passion,
intensity, and drive to keep the US defense inspired 60, 70, 90 minutes into a match.
