I think it's fair to say that Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro did not have a successful World Cup
campaign. When a ball deflects off your knees and then New Zealand score, things are definitely not
going to plan, and clearly this was one tournament too many for the 36 year old defender.
Cannavaro did have one bit of World Cup related good news this week though, as he's been named
the most beautiful man in the World Cup by dating website Beautiful People.

This goal is all about one man and it's not Karim Benzema, who supplies a routine finish. So
much modern football is cliched and predictable, but not Guti's assist, which is daring and
magical. I honestly don't know if any England player today has the imagination to try something
like that.

I noticed that the Guardian shortlisted this Messi goal for end-of-season honours, more because
of a wonderful through ball by Xavi than for anything Messi did, but for my coin the Messi solo
goal posted above is way more impressive.
Messi's unstoppable chip at pace against Arsenal was also in the reckoning, but in the end his
goal against Zaragoza sums up Leo better than any other he scored this season.
Yesterday we posted 101GG's 101 Greatest Goals of the season. Today we're posting the European
goal of the season, as voted for by Guardian readers.
The goal was scored by Benjamin Huggel for FC Basel vs FC Zurich in October 2009. Obviously the
finish is a bit good, but I suspect the build up intelligent short passing at the top of the box,
complete with a couple of tricks is what really sealed the deal.

For the bronze...
Anyone who has ever played football will know how difficult it is merely to strike the ball this
far (and so low!), let alone with any degree of accuracy. So as amazing as Marvellous Maynor's goal
looks, I think in technical terms it's even more amazing than that 99% of footballers,
including many professionals, couldn't hope to pull this off.
A grande
estrela da companhia tem história no futebol alemão e hoje atua no Basel, da Suíça.
Switzerland's German manager Ottmar Hitzfeld presented the 23-man final squad for the World Cup.
They have a team consisting of players from central European clubs with a great diversity, however
they have no big star. I would say that Arturo Vidal's teammate from Bayer Leverkusen Tranquillo
Barnetta is their best player.

Astonishing technique and composure shown by Robben. The margin for error here was minute.

Some goals are all about the beauty of trajectory and nothing else. Like this...
In essence, this is a long-ball goal, but Cohen's extraordinary finish, 100% intentional,
elevates it to the level of balls-out wonder goal. Imagine the fuss if Messi or Rooney had scored
it.

1-2-3!!! Three insanely good touches by Maynard, who has a habit of scoring wonder goals. I
heart this goal with all my, er, heart.

As regular Pies readers will know, in the past couple of weeks we've been counting down our top
10 goals of the season. This is the daddy of them all...
Maicon is a right-back. That's the same position as Lee Dixon and Danny Mills. Incredible.
Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina discussed the current state of
their Spanish side after their shock loss to Switzerland. Torres stressed putting the Swiss game
behind them, the importance to stay true to their unique style and his side's preparation during a
brief interview with the respected Madrid sports daily, Marca.
