I just wanted to include a link to an article that is in the recent issue of ESPN Magazine on
Freddy Adu. Its a wonderful article by Carmen Renee Thompson that gives a great account of the
pressures that Freddy Adu has had to face and how his development is coming along. All the way
through the article she reminds us that he just turned 19 years old and still has plenty of time to
develop his skill and become the star American player that we are all hoping for.
Obviously the true bargains won't be known for some time, but there were a few transfers which
caught the eye before the participants had even put on their new shirt. Eliminating loans made sure
somebody has actually bought up the entire contract this summer, and everyone of these guys
happened to come in at under [.
SL Benfica's Freddy Adu now finds himself competing in France on a season-long loan with AS
Monaco. Here is a closer look at the some of his Ligue 1 teammates. Flavio Roma: The
captain of the squad, the 34-year-old Italian goalkeeper was rumored for a return to his
native country this summer but appears to be staying [.
Yesterday was a quiet day on the Eddie Johnson transfer rumor front. Today, though, we see two new
stories about possible destinations for the Wizards striker.
The first, is from Portugal, where Benfica look to be mounting a 3 million euros bid for Johnson to
partner him with Freddy Adu. The article has quotes from Eddie's agent saying that it would be a
good fit for Johnson because his friend Freddy is playing there.
Kansas City's Eddie Johnson has left U.S. national team camp in L.A. and is in serious negotiations
with English club Fulham. Even though I thought Derby or Benfica would be EJ's new home in the
coming weeks this news however doesn't surprise me one bit considering the number of American-born
players on Fulham's roster right now.
I fought the urge all weekend. Alas, I am human. I can fight no longer. So I give you: Transfer
Rumors. Today, a few from Europe. Tomorrow, a smattering from MLS and perhaps elsewhere. On the
Americans-in-Europe front, some interesting news coming out of Monaco. Seems [...]
Interesting. Mr Burns may end up coaching The Biggest Midget in the Game™. My man Binks says
"that's right, the man that likes to load the dishwasher after having sex, is interviewing for
the Benfica spot. My how the mighty have kept moving South. Figuratively and now
literally".
I actually don't have to much to say about this potential move as I'm really not educated enough on
Eriksson's managerial style to comment.
If there was any doubt that i have been nervous about Roma's chances this year against an aging but
still powerful Inter Milan it speaks to the issue that i feel we have yet to replace Ludovic Giuly
and Mancini. In there stead we signed John arne Riise at left back from Liverpool and attacker
Vincenzo Montella from Sampdoria.
If AS are to be trusted, and on most occasions they are not, then Spanish champions and European
powerhouse Real Madrid have made a 'shortlist' of 15 wingers out of whom they would like to sign
(at least) one during January. The Spanish tabloid has reported that Real's Pedja Mijatovic and
Miguel Ángel Portugal held a [.
With the January transfer window now open, it's time to again hear all the rumors of where Eddie
Johnson will go to in Europe. In the Times online in the UK, it has a few of the parties that are
interested in the services of the Wizards striker.
Among those interested are Fulham, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Reading, and Benfica.
If there was any argument to be made for having the New England Revolution establish ties with a
European club, perhaps the Michael Videira saga is the most convincing thus far.
Sometime after the third hour of the afternoon during the January
18th MLS SuperDraft, the New England Revolution took a gamble.
According to the official websites of both Benfica and Monaco, American Freddy Adu has been loaned
to AS Monaco (French first division) with an option to buy. The deal was struck Monday night after
several weeks of negotiations. Adu is expected to join his teammates at "The Rock" after
the Olympics.
Summertime, and the living is easy--unless of course you have to play UEFA Cup qualifiers, follow
MLS or (in this instance) make restitution for not putting together a Top 25 list in many months.
But now is the perfect time to take a long, last look at last season's top clubs. Except, we didn't
feel a Top 25 was sufficient.
Freddy Adu has officially made his move to Monaco. Since Benfica signed Pablo Aimar, they
were happy to let Adu go. The loan move has a view to a permanent move in the event that
Monaco wants to keep Adu in a longer term move. Adu might hold a press conference from
California where he [...]
There are few things more enjoyable for the average football fan than seeing the biggest team in
their country descend into a slow and painful downfall. So right now, many Portuguese are gleefully
watching the drama unfold as the self proclaimed "Biggest Club in the World", Sport Lisboa de
Benfica very publicly self-destruct.
Sky Sports News has reported today that Pablo Aimar, has signed a 4 year deal with Portuguese
giants Benfica. Kevin Keegan - let's execute plan B Kevin
Four years ago it was Carlos Tevez, on Saturday Benfica's Angel Di María secured his place in
Argentine football history by becoming the second man to score a gold medal-winning goal for his
country in the Olympic Football Tournament. In a final played in scorching heat in the Bird's Nest
Stadium in Beijing, Argentina rode [.
If you've looked at the tables across Europe, you might find yourself doing double takes to make
sure that is the name you saw up there above everyone else. And chances are you were correct the
first time. Big money is taking a backseat to good football, intelligent strategy and shrewd
business moves.
Here's an email I got about my Adu article.
I have just read your article about Freddy Adu's kind of frozen status at Benfica and I think he
should find himself a team where he would be playing regularly , a mid-table team in any of the top
leagues and he should shelve his dreams about playing for the Man Uniteds and the Barcelonas of
this world for now.
(Summary is not available.)
Feel the burn, boys The absolute professionals at Benfica won't go near a football until they have
warmed-up. Felipe Bastos and Gilles Binya are particularly to eager that every single part of their
body is limbered up at the start of training! And they are both looking rather smug about it too!
Thanks to Off The Post [.
I couldn't disagree more with this article that David Mosse from ESPN has written about Freddy Adu
and I don't consider myself a fan nor do I have anything against Adu. Freddy is still a young man
trying to find his way in the game, he has a lot of talent, and when he finds the right situation I
think he will settle in and begin to realize his potential.
Wenger is a big fan of this young starlet, who just helped his country to the Olympic gold and
therefore his club has decided to slap on one hell of a pricetag! Why not join the debate at the
COS forum? Benfica have reportedly put a £24million price tag on Argentina youngster ...
Due to the labor-intensive effort involved with putting together this list, Soccer Source's Top 25
will skip next week's edition. But first, this week's list! Read on:
1 (1). FC Barcelona
Barca inexplicably dropped points to FC Basel at home in the Champions League, though the game was
largely irrelevant seeing as the Catalonian club qualified for the quarterfinals anyway and likely
would have even if they had lost that game.
Just as 1967 saw the rise to prominence of a European champion whose fan base remains strong to
this day – Celtic – so did 1968. Despite falling in the Premiership to its cross-town
rivals, English upstart Manchester United took advantage of home field advantage, playing before
100,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, to win its first European Champions Cup.
As I suspected in an earlier report this morning, Michael Bradley is looking ever less likely for a
move to AS Monaco. The club is now indicating that their main target for an attacking midfielder is
Alejandro Alonso of Bordeaux. This means they won't need to up the ante for Heerenveen's Michael
Bradley unless they can't snare Alonso.
So, after beginning his career in a strange little federal district, Freddy Adu continues it in a
strange little principality. From DC to Salt Lake to Lisbon to Monaco: one of the more unusual
soccer career paths, even today. I'm a little puzzled as to why Adu's Benfica performance gets such
bland reviews; 21 appearances, five goals and an established role as a super-sub seem like worthy
accomplishments for a 19-year-old playing in Europe for the first time.
JOSE ANTONIO REYES did not wish to leave ATLETICO DE MADRID for Portugues Club BENFICA, were both
Clubs had come to en agreement for the players transfer. However, Atletico put more pressure on...

El clasico portugues termino 1-1 pero lo curioso fue ver a este sexagenario aficionado de las
aguilas del Benfica atacar a el abanderaod. Cero violencia, por eso aquí tenemos estas

20070401: LISBON, PORTUGAL - Portuguese Bwin League 2006/2007: SL Benfica vs FC Porto, 23rd round.
Here's a great article from the New York Times on the history of soccer games that were played at
Yankee Stadium during the years, including a classic one between Santos and Benfica in 1968, which
features 2 of the all-time greats in Pele and Eusebio. I did some digging and found some footage of
a game between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs from 1952.
Benfica overturned a 3-2 first-leg deficit to knock out UEFA Intertoto Cup winners Napoli. Ezequiel
Lavezzi had the chance to grab an away goal after just four minutes but could not beat Quim in the
Benfica goal and the home side began to have the better of the play, though Napoli threatened on
the counterattack.

As intriguing as the current edition of the Champions League may be, there's a chance the 2009-2010
tournament could be one of the strangest, parity-rich events in football history. Seems someone has
taken the snowglobe that is European football, given it a good shake and the flakes aren't landing
where people expect.
Oh, the soccer gods are cruel, aren't they. During AEK's financial troubles a few years ago,
we had to unload a lot of talent (remember that the Greek Championship squad of Euro 2004 had five
AEK starters). Katsouranis managed to stick around two years longer than the others, but he
then had to leave for [.
Soem terrible news tonight, that Pablo Aimar is reported to have signed for Portuguese giants
Benfica. Kevin Keegan - go to plan B
The Portuguese league champs are back in the UEFA Champions League after an appeal by rivals
Benfica and Guimaraes was dismissed.
Porto was initially docked six points and kicked outta the UCL for attempting to bribe refs, but
they still won the league title and are back in the competition.
Espanyol president Daniel Sanchez Llibre says Albert Riera could soon move to the Premier League -
but insists the winger will not come cheap.
Sanchez Llibre admitted he had received offers from two English clubs, reported by the Spanish
press to be Liverpool and Everton.
The Spanish side have fought throughout pre-season to keep hold of their best players, with
repeated bids from Benfica for forward Luis Garcia rejected because the Portuguese club would not
meet Espanyol's asking price.
One day after that of the Champions League, the draw for the First Round of the UEFA Cup 2008-09
took place in Monaco Friday. Lots of teams involved, but of course right now we're only concerned
with the Serie A clubs, which didn't fare too badly to be quite honest. . 2008/09 UEFA

The Soccer Source Ranking Committee faced a crucial dilemma, with last week's top three teams all
dropping points in their games. What would we do? Read on to find out.
1 (Last Week: 7). Liverpool
Okay, we admit it. Liverpool is a good team. Very good in fact. How good? The first team to win at
Stamford Bridge in 86 games good.
