Despite having scored the most goals of any team in the Premiership so far this season, Arsenal
coach Arsene Wenger seems to be in hot pursuit of another striker or two.
21 year-old Congo striker Tresor Mputu is currently on trial with the Gunners, and Wenger looks set
upon recalling teenage striking sensation Carlos Vela from his loan at Osasuna now that work permit
restrictions have been worked out.
Congo striker Tresor Mputu's agent claims that Arsenal have made a concrete offer for the 21
year-old TP Mazembe star.
Mputu, who has scored 34 goals in 30 league games for his team, was in London on a 10 day trial
which Arsene Wenger and Bajo Bujani, the player's agent, both considered to be successful.
Analysis is bulletized below--first an observation: Every American soccer fan has had this
experience: you're alone watching the television, and in a moment of high drama, your team scores a
crucial goal. In the ritual, communal experience of being a sports spectator, we're used to
leaping, screaming, and generally losing control in with a crowd of fellow fans.
Arsenal are, without a doubt, one of the offensive powerhouses of English football, despite having
lost talismanic striker Thierry Henry to Barcelona during the Summer.
The Gunners are currently on top of the Premiership and its goalscoring charts, having scored 27
goals in 12 Premier League matches. Outside of the Premier League Arsenal have scored 19 goals in 7
outings, including a 7-0 drubbing of Slavia Prague at the Emirates.
So here we have it. League leaders Arsenal are ready to take on Derby, a team that has been labeled
as the worst ever to play in the Premiership. They have been living up to this label, losing 4-0 to
Tottenham and 6-0 to Liverpool and 1-0 to Manchester City in their first three away games this
season. They were admittedly given a tough opening schedule, and a visit to the Emirates will not
do
Group H leaders Arsenal take on third-placed Slavia Prague at the Emirates this coming Tuesday.
Arsenal will be confident coming into this match, having won eleven straight games in all
competitions. A 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers this past Saturday will do nothing to ruin their
morale.
Arsenal would do well not to underestimate the Czech team though.
Only two days after defeating Chelsea in the Premier League Arsenal travel to Ewood Park to face
Blackburn in the Carling Cup quarterfinals.
The team is likely to be hugely different from the near-full-strength squad that beat the blues to
keep Arsenal on top of the Premier League, as Arsene Wenger always tries to field his kids during
cup ties.
Arsene Wenger will continue to blood his youngsters in the Carling Cup, even against the tough
opposition of Blackburn. The Arsenal coach feels that playing a young squad will not only increase
the experience of Arsenal's fringe players, but also allow the Gunners' senior squad a chance to
rest during period congested with fixtures.
Gael Clichy, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, William Gallas, Bacary Sagna - Five Arsenal players have
been selected to play for France in important qualifying fixtures against the Faroe Islands on
October 13th and Lithuania on October 17th. Flamini received his first call-up to the national
side, thanks in large part to his impressive club form of late.
First-placed Arsenal will take on struggling Bolton Wanderers this Saturday, only three days after
Sammy Lee parted ways with the club. Bolton, who finished sixth in the Premiership last season,
find themselves in an early relegation battle, having picked up only five points from nine games
this season. Arsenal on the other hand are riding a wave of ten consecutive wins in all
competitions and will hope that their brilliant form continues despite the international break last
weekend.
Match Preview
An undermanned Arsenal side managed to break down a resolute Wigan in the last ten minutes to go
clear at the top of the Premier League table as Manchester United faltered at Bolton.
Wigan showed some real character in their compact defense, but a goal from William Gallas opened
the game up in the 83rd minute and Tomas Rosicky insured the win with a second only two minutes
later.
Premier League leaders Arsenal travel to Spain this Tuesday to face off against struggling Sevilla.
The two teams lead Champions League Group H after four games, with Arsenal already qualified on ten
points and Sevilla one point behind. Slavia Prague and Steaua Bucharest close up the group with
four and zero points respectively.
Match Preview Arsenal dominated today's games for long spells, despite only managing to put the
game away 2-0 in the final 10 minutes. An 83rd minute header from Nicklas Bendtner broke the
deadlock, and Neves Denilson put the game beyond doubt with a superbly taken strike from 20 yards
out. Arsene Wenger's younger players have once again proved their worth and will go into the fourth
round full
Arsenal won away at Reading to reclaim the top spot in the Premiership on goals scored.
Mathieu Flamini, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Alex Hleb made it 3-0 to the Gunners before Nicky Shorey
pulled one back for Reading near the end of normal time to wrap up a comfortable win for
Arsenal.
Lineups:
Reading: Marcus Hahnemann; Nicky Shorey, Ivar Ingimarsson, Graeme Murty, Ibrahima Sonko; Bobby
Convey, Brynjar Gunnarsson, James Harper, Stephen Hunt; Kevin Doyle, Dave Kitson
Arsenal: Manuel Almunia; Bacary Sagna, William Gallas, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy; Emmanuel Eboue,
Cesc Fabregas, Mathieu Flamini, Tomas Rosicky; Alex Hleb; Emmanuel Adebayor
Arsenal started brightly, with Adebayor hitting the post in the fourth minute of play.
Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is undoubtedly one of the best talent spotters in football.
During his tenure as manager in London, the Frenchman has signed relative unknowns such Thierry
Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Robert Pires, assembling the first unbeaten team in the top tier of
English football since Preston North End in 1889.
Since then the Arsenal coach has continued to buy fabulous talents at low prices.
This Saturday a depleted Arsenal side face off against second from bottom Wigan as the Gunners look
to retain the top spot in the Premier League.
After three straight draws (against Liverpool, Manchester United, and Slavia Prague), the Gunners
were just beginning to regain their form with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Reading before the
international break.
Arsenal travel to St. James' Park this Wednesday as they finally play their game in hand against
Newcastle United. Depending on Manchester United's result tomorrow, a win at Newcastle could see
Arsenal go as many as eight points clear of their nearest competition.
A Gunners win could also see Sam Allardyce fired from his new club.
Arsenal defeated Steaua Bucharest 2-1 at the Emirates, returning to their winning ways before a
tough fixture against Chelsea on Sunday.
The victory, which saw the return from injury of Robin van Persie, was not enough to put the
Gunners at the top of their group, meaning that they will have to face Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC
Milan, Inter Milan, or Porto in the knockout stages.
From yesterdays Carling Cup action.
Match Preview
Liverpool brought an end to Arsenal's 12 game winning streak today, as the Gunners came back from a
1-0 deficit to draw 1-1. Cesc Fabregas' eightieth minute equalizer was enough to put Arsenal back
on top of the Premier League with a game in hand, but next Saturday's fixture with Manchester
United could see them fall off the top.
Premier League leaders Arsenal take on the Championships nineteenth placed team, Sheffield United,
this Wednesday in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. The Premiership giants were lucky to avoid
drawing against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, but the Blades will not be nearly so happy to
have to face Arsenal.
Arsenal played twice against United during the Blades brief one season stint in the Premiership,
and while Arsenal demolished United 3-0 at the Emirates, the Blades will take some solace in the
fact that they were able to defeat Arsenal 1-0 at Bramall Lane - the locale of Wednesday's fixture.
Arsene Wenger said before the international break that he feared that the international break might
result in injuries to key members of his Arsenal squad, and he couldn't have been more right.
We learned that Mathieu Flamini and Abou Diaby had been hurt during their international matches for
France and the French U21 team respectively, after Saturday's matches.
Eduardo and Tomas Rosicky were both on target in their countries ties against Estonia and San
Marino respectively, as Arsenal players made a significant contribution to their side's Euro
Qualifying efforts. Rosicky, the Czech captain, headed in for the opener against San Marino,
continuing his goalscoring form after a parried shot ended up coming to him.
Arsene Wenger has assured Arsenal fans that young gunners Justin Hoyte and Nicklas Bendtner will
both be at Arsenal after the January transfer window. Hoyte had already proclaimed his allegiance
to the club, claiming that he would rather fight for a spot in the heavily contested right-back
position than go for guaranteed first team football at a lesser club.
Arsenal are set to play an exciting match on Saturday as they take on West Ham, the only team ever
to beat Arsenal at the Emirates. West Ham are something of a bogey team for the Gunners, having won
their last 4 Premiership meetings, and Arsenal will not be happy if they lose to recently departed
Freddy Ljungberb. However, Arsene Wenger's boys will be heavy favorites to win this match,
especially
Alex Hleb passed a late fitness test today and will be included in the squad for Saturday's game
against West Ham. The Belarussian will be a welcome addition to Arsene Wenger's squad, especially
considering his fine form prior to his injury. Hleb, who has been heavily criticized for attempting
to walk the ball into the goal has already scored twice this season, once in the Champions League
Arsenal have four players who are doubts for tomorrow's Champions League game against Steaua
Bucharest.
Alex Hleb, Mathieu Flamini, Abou Diaby, and Emmanuel Adebayor are awaiting late fitness tests
before Arsene Wenger names his squad for the away tie. All four have made the trip to Romania, but
it is yet to be seen if any or all of them will play tomorrow.
Arsenal qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League today, despite a disappointingly
boring show against Slavia Prague in the Czech capitol.
An undermanned Arsenal squad failed to hit the heights of their 7-0 drubbing of Slavia Prague two
weeks ago at the Emirates in what proved to be by far the least entertaining of Arsenal's games
this season.
Tomorrow will see Arsene Wenger's young guns take on Big Sam's Newcastle side in the Carling Cup.
Wenger confirmed that he will continue to play youngsters and players "who need to get up to full
speed" in the Carling Cup, despite the fact that Sam Allardyce always plays his strongest squad
even in the 'lesser' of the English cups. Arsene informed Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has announced that he will stick with Manuel Almunia in goal for tomorrow's game
against Bolton despite the return of Arsenal's former first-choice keeper Jens Lehmann from injury.
Fans are beginning to question whether Lehmann has a place at the club any more, as Wenger has
completely left him out of the squad, keeping Lukasz Fabianski as the second choice goalkeeper.

Arsenal's youngsters came out 3-0 winners at Bramall Lane, following an impressive performance from
the club's up-and-coming stars. A brace from Eduardo and a goal from Neves Denilson wrapped up a
Carling Cup game which had been completely one-sided.
Arsenal had sixteen shots to United's six, and had an equally lopsided share of possession,
controlling the ball for no less than 68% of the game.
Arsenal stuttered to their first defeat since April as a solid Sevilla side outplayed the Gunners
to register a 3-1 win. This means that Sevilla are likely to top Champions League Group H after the
final matchday. Arsenal will therefore have to face much tougher competition in the first knockout
stage.
Arsenal completed the double over arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur as they escaped from a nervy
encounter with three points. The Gunners, who were heavy favorites to win the match despite
Tottenham's recent resurgence, went a goal up just after halftime when Emmanuel Adebayor scored his
tenth league goal of the season, but Dimitar Berbatov levelled in the 66th.
