D.C. United faces Club Deportivo Marathon for the first time in its history tonight at Estadio
Olimpico in a game that will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (10 p.m. ET). The
Black-and-Red hope to rebound from a Group A opening 2-0 loss to Deportivo Saprissa last week at
RFK Stadium. Cruz Azul, who lost to Marathon in Honduras last week 2-0, defeated Saprissa 4-0 last
night in Mexico.
Though most Americans have today off to celebrate the last year's worth of labor, United's
players were at RFK for a couple hours with their sights set on Wednesday night's Open Cup final.
Everyone who is healthy played signifcant minutes against New York over the weekend - either in the
first team's 0-0 draw on Saturday or in the reserve's 2-1 win on Sunday - so the team gathered for
a couple of runs, a long stretch and training room treatment today.
A Lesson in hardwork, humility and respect. It's only appropriate on a holiday designed to give
"the working citizen a day off", to recognize two of the hardest workers in MLS. So
here's a tip of the hat to Brian McBride and Ben Olsen. According to Fulham's manager,"Brian
McBride has been a fine ambassador for Fulham Football Club.
By definition, the Richie Award goes to the hardest working, most underrated player on the United
roster. The award's namesake Richie Williams is probably most famous for his diminutive stature,
but he is second most famous for his work rate. The dude just went nonstop, constantly interrupting
plays for the opposing team.
D.C. United has announced the 1998 D.C. United team will be returning to RFK Stadium to be honored

the Seventh Annual Hometown Heroes Night. Geoff Aunger, Judah Cooks, Marco Etcheverry, Scott
Garlick, John Harkes, Brian Kamler, Roy Lassiter, Carlos Llamosa, Jaime Moreno, Ben Olsen, Eddie
Pope, Tom Presthus, Mark Simpson and AJ Wood will all be in attendance on Saturday, September 13
when the Black-and-Red host FC Dallas.
While United supporters recovered Thursday from a night of celebrating their club's U.S. Open
Cup victory, the team packed their bags and flew cross-country to begin preperations for tonight's
League match against San Jose. It's tough sledding for the Black-and-Red this weekend. United
faithful in the Nation's Capital are dealing with Hurricane Hanna.
Static from the untuned dial on a sullen Friday afternoon . . . The Bearded Bombardier is done for
2008. Duh. In the land of notional great seasons, a healthy Benny reigns supreme. And his beard is
luxuriant. Pardon while I prepare to visit said land of imaginary success for United in FM/WSM
2008.
