Freddy Adu has only been with his new club Belenenses for a few weeks, but the former DC United midfielder seems to be fitting in well after seeing his first playing time this past week in the Portuguese League Cup.

Midfielder Freddy Adu got his first start of the Portuguese Liga on Monday, with Belenenses losing 1-0 to CD Nacional de Madeira. Adu played the first-half before being subbed off with an injured ankle. He isn't expected to need extended recovery time. Anselmo got the game's only goal in the 27th-minute.

Freddy Adu will be staying in Portugal for the upcoming European season, but he won't be spending it with Benfica.

According to Portuguese website Abola, Adu has been loaned to Belenenses. Adu didn't figure into Benfica's plans after returning from an unsuccessful loan spell with French club Monaco.

Freddy Adu's time at Portuguese club Belenenses appears over, likely for good according to reports out of Europe (via SBI).

Belenenses has a new manager and he is cutting some dead weight, including Adu.

Adu had struggled for playing time with Belenenses since his arrival in the fall, but will now face even stiffer competition for minutes at Benfica.
