Back in February I raised the question of Rio Ferdinand's fitness and his continuing injury problems, asking "how long can this go on?". Well now we have our answer.
At the time it seemed to me that someone who hardly played and was the subject of much speculation about his ability to play more than three games before breaking down deserved some serious scrutiny before the job of England captain became his.

Roger Espinoza came off the bench for a seven minute appearance today for the Honduran national team today in Austria. Espinoza came off the bench in the 83rd minute for Julio Leon in Honduras' 2-2 draw with Belarus in Villach. All the scoring was done by the time Espinoza entered the game as Honduras took an early lead before conceding twice.

The glory friendlies, at least in name, took the day off, so we were left with the hosts (that's South Africa), Denmark and Honduras. Luckily South Africa put on a show in front of the Soccer City fans, full with plenty of ear drum-shattering vuvuzelas, men in epic makarabas (to the left) and women dancing with giant.

In preparation for South Africa, several World Cup bound teams are playing in friendlies today to physically warmup and mentally prepare for the juggernaut tournament this summer. Amongst today's games, fans can look forward to seeing former England coach Sven Eriksson's Ivory Coast for the first time since he was hired, if Nigeria can overcome the off-field distractions that have plagued their World Cup preparations, if Japan can respond to positively versus England after being booed off the field by their own fans or if Tunisia can record a win over their former colonial ruler (France) at home.

This is the first post I have written since the World Cup started, and I am sorry I have not helped the other bloggers keep this blog up to date. I've been hiding and just waiting for this storm to end. I am aware that it is far from over, but the French have many things going for them right now.
