Craig Foster's weekly piece in the Sun-Herald deals, naturally enough, with the new National
Football Curriculum. But what is very surprising in the article is the vicious excoriation of Han
Berger's predecessor as Technical Director, Rob Baan. When Baan was appointed, he was greeted with
open arms by Foster (and the rest of the SBS crew).
Unable to see today's Inter-Lazio game i was forced to stay near my laptop this morning. My
crackling speakers would pop and crack with the sounds from Beijing. My only means to the game was
courtesy of Radio Rai. Apparently sold out and lustrous in atmosphere and pageantry a weaker Lazio
side missing Goran Pandev,Christian Ledesma and Lorenzo De Silvestri overcame Inter 2-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo and superstar sprinter Usain Bolt united in
a press conference announcing that they both endorsed a 2016 Madrid Olympic bid. The endorsement
comes as a huge bonus for Madrid as Bolt was the star on the track at the Summer Olympic Games in
Beijing.
President of Real Madrid Florentino Perez is contemplating building a Disneyland-style theme park
based on Real Madrid on the edge of Madrid. In the pursuit of exploiting the club's high marketing
potential around the world, the plan includes possible locations at Beijing and Miami to take
advantage of the club's Chinese and American following.

The Barclays Asia Trophy tournament began its 2009 edition on Wednesday with two semifinal
matches. Tottenham Hotspur faced West Ham United while Hull City played against Beijing Guaon.
Here's a recap of both matches along with video highlights.
Tottenham Hotspur edges West Ham 1-0 Video Highlights
Tottenham defeated fellow Premier League club West Ham 1-0 on a Jermaine Defoe goal in the 75th
minute on Wednesday.
It was made known pretty early that the contracts of Julio Cruz and Christian Panucci were not
going to be renewed by Inter and Roma at the end of the season.
Both players were linked with a host of clubs but no offer became concrete and up until yesterday
it was anybody's guess where Cruz and Panucci would wind up playing next season.
Well, it's that time of the summer again. I'm off to the old country tomorrow, so the blog will
be inactive for a couple of weeks. However I will be back right before the start of the Serie A
season so I'll be able to maybe get a mega-preview up like last season and we'll wrap up the
important news that happened while I was gone.
Joel Griffiths and his brother played in the victorious Beijing team, champions of all China. Joel
didn't get to play in the last game as he has a 7 week suspension - for rude gestures at opposing
fans.
Could be the end of the road for Joel - the only way he is going back is if is on a free transfer -
who would risk $1m for a player who could miss much of the season.
The four teams have been named for the 2009 Premier League Asia Trophy to be played in China
between July 29-August 1, 2009. It's the first time the tournament will be played on mainland China
when Beijing will be the host to Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Hull City and Beijing
Guo'an.
Arsene Wenger went to China for a visit and spent some time at a soccer academy to discuss
football. I've translated the short article from a Chinese newspaper below:
Wenger Visits China, Talks Football on the Great Wall
The manager of English Premier League club Arsenal, Arsene Wenger is on a tour of China; he visited
the "Bird nest" (Beijing's 2008 Olympic stadium) and went to see the great wall.
The Chinese footballer who led an attack on the referee after a qualifier for China's 11th National
Games last weekend was banned for life by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) on Thursday (See
previous post)
The incident came at the end of the final round of group matches in an under-20 competition to
decide which of China's provinces and autonomous regions would qualify for October's National
Games.
Mario Balotelli is a very good player but he is a real plonker most of the time. Balotelli
probably thinks he is the best player in the world and is puzzled as to why nobody
else can see it. Jose Mourinho refused to give him the number 10 jersey and Super Mario responded
by slacking at training sessions.
Lazio beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the Italian Supercoppa in Beijing's Olympic Bird Nest Stadium (I
think this is a great idea, playing the curtain raiser abroad. Better than that stupid "39th game"
abroad anyway). Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan dominated the game but failed to capitalise on their
chances. Lazio's Francelino Matuzalem scored the first goal [.
Lazio came up with a surprising 2-1 win over Inter Milan in the Supercoppa held in Beijing (no,
that's not in Italy) on Saturday. Guess who didn't take the loss so well:
"Lazio have the joy of victory, while we are safe in the knowledge we have a team and a great
future," the Special One told Inter Channel.
Remember that game between Lazio and Inter Milan over in China? I forgot the name of it, but it
turns out Jose Mourinho and friends ran up quite a tab.
"The two teams from Italy were just like two luxury tourist groups," Wang Bo, who
looked after the teams on behalf of organisers United Vanson International, told the Beijing
News.
"I think he's selling himself short, but I think it's a lifestyle decision." so says Chris Turner
Hartlepool manager talking about Joel Porter's decision to play for the Gold Coast.
No Chris, you blinkered Englishman, it's about the football:
He'll play alongside Champions League player Jason Culina,
He'll play at a Stadium Hartlepool can only dream of,
His first game will be in the Bird Nest Stadium in Beijing, followed by SunCorp in the League.
You have probably heard this name, because this boy has lately been connected with many big
clubs. Several big clubs have already made their offers to the Lisbon „eagles"
but there were no results. Benfica are aware that they have an extremely talented player and that
they won't let him for less than 20 million Euros.
Queue the Figo to MLS rumors up again. It appears the 36 year old Portuguese legend is looking to
move stateside if the following email from a credible source below is correct.
Received by email this morning from Europe:
Hello,
I have some good information for you regarding one recently retired Luis Figo.
UPDATE: According to ESPN Soccernet, Aston Villa and
Hull City have joined Sunderland in the hunt for Tottenham
striker Darren Bent.
July 27th, 2009 According to Sky Sports News, Sunderland
appear close to signing Tottenham striker Darren Bent.
A shameful display of the worst in soccer - Footballers from the Tianjin team in China while
playing a match against Beijing in China's National Games disagreed with the dismissal of two of
their players - one for a blatant stamp on an opponent who was lying on the ground. At the final
whistle they went after the ref.
So here we have it, where better to have a good old fashioned London derby than Beijing, as
Redknapp and Zola give a good run out for their top notch first teamers you'll never guess who got
the winner! Oh yes, the player West Ham fans love to (and have every right to) hate. Mr. Jermain
Defoe!

Tottenham beat West Ham by one goal in a friendly game played at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing.
Spurs was the livelier team and showed better fitness and sharpness. Jermain Defoe scored the only
goal of the game and booked a place for Tottenham in the finals of the Barclays Asia Trophy.
After Day One of the Barclays Premier Asia Trophy competition being held in Beijing,
China it will be a Tottenham v Hull City final on Friday.
Tottenham beat West Ham 1-0 in the first game and West Ham's day was made worse when Luis Boa-Morte
was stretchered off after damaging his cruciate knee ligaments.
The Barclays Asia Trophy finished up on Friday with Tottenham Hotspur facing Hull City and West
Ham facing Beijing Guaon. Here's a recap of both matches along with video highlights.

The Serie A Game to Watch this week features the only matchup of two teams in the top four in
the standings. Although it is only the third week of the season (sorry Sampdoria fans), both
Lazio and Juventus are eyeing a possible scudetto and this match could keep one club's
early momentum going.
Magnificent. Well no. But a great game.
Newcastle dominated the first half. An under-strength Beijing came back in the second half - and
the other brother, Ryan scored against the run of play. Adam Griffith played his last game for
Newcastle as a yellow card will keep him out of the last match of this group.
Tomorrow is a big day for Lazio and Sampdoria. Two sides who have performed under expectations
throughout the season have a chance to salvage their season by winning a trophy, and more
importantly, a place in the Europa League (I think the new name is so stupid) next season. Both
sides have not won the Coppa in a long time (Lazio haven't lifted it since 2004, Sampdoria since
1994; both sides have won it 4 times in their history).
For everything David Beckham has been doing for England you'd think he was the Prime Minister.
Beckham teamed up with Prime Minister Gordon Brown yesterday at the Wembley Stadium to help
establish a bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Games in London.
Is there nothing he can't do? David was also influential in bringing the Summer Olympic games to
London and was even asked to show up in Beijing to accept the Olympic torch on behalf of
England.
U.S. Women's National Team coach Pia Sundhage named her 18-woman roster for the
Olympic tournament in Beijing (ASN, June 23, 2009).
Nine players on the roster were members of the U.S. team that won the gold medal four years ago in
Athens, Greece, including team co-captains Christie Rampone and Kate Markgraf.
Aconteceu na China: chileno ataca chinês bofetada
Um jogo do campeonato chinês acabou com um festival de chapadas, depois de um defesa chileno ter
reagido a uma alegada agressão de um avançado chinês da pior maneira. O protagonista do
The list of pre-season fixtures grows more outlandish every year. Wolves and Fulham are in
Australia, Hull are getting ready for a tournament in Beijing, Chelsea plan to wow Hollywood. And
they are not alone.
On the same evening the Londoners meet Inter Milan in Pasadena, a Premier League rival will be
on show in another Los Angeles suburb.
Italians still insist that Aleksandar Kolarov is Juventus' first pick, when it
comes to the position of the left back. The biggest Italian club made up the team that should be
number one favourites for the title, but flanks are the weakest links.
The solution for the right side is obviously Martin Caceres from Barcelona,
while Fabio Groso was in charge of the left side, but sports director Seko has already stated that
he is no longer in club plans for the future.
According to Sky Sports News, Sunderland appear close to signing
Tottenham striker Darren Bent. Bent was supposed to play in
Beijing with Tottenham but was told by the club not to make the trip.
Just yesterday Richard Scudamore, head of the Prem, sat himself in front of a bevy of reporters,
not at all influenced by the fact that he was on a block-building mission in Beijing, and touted
the Chinese Super League as the new blossoming world power - the one which may come to rival
Europe's heavyweights [.
