Reading striker Leroy Lita is a proud man, especially of his sexual exploits. The 22-year-old
apparently made a mobile sex video allegedly with his girlfriend that he then sent to teammates as
a laugh. Trouble began when those teammates sent it to friends at other Premiership clubs and now
the U21 England International is receiving taunts from players around the league.
LA Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas has admitted that David Beckham is causing some
problems for the team, but not the type that Santino Quaranta suggested yesterday. Instead he feels
the main issue is with expectations.
"We are going to win with David Beckham and we are going to lose with David Beckham. We
will not win every single game and he is not going to score five goals every single
game.
I am not sure if anyone has really seen these before, I personally haven't been scouring the
internet to find this out before they unveil them later this week:
So I guess this is what LA will be wearing for the rest of the season. I am still wondering Beckham
won't be wearing #7 again.
Audio of David Beckham following Wednesday's match.
The 4-6 weeks diagnosis was one he made but then took back, but I guess it's not like a courtroom
where the judge can tell the jury to disregard a comment as "Beckham out Six Weeks" was splashed
across some web sites this morning.
Well, here it is folks, but trust me, it was ten times as impressive in person.
The always fun Jose Mourinho has said that he wouldn't mind coaching in the US at the end of his
career, which is some 20-years away. When Alexi Lalas heard the news, he announced that LA is the
only place for Mourinho and that they will have him on their sidelines for the 2027 season.
Okay, that last part is a lie, but Mr. Chelsea wouldn't mind being part of the growth of soccer,
just not anytime soon.
So let's just list off everything that is surrounding this issue.
Beckham is still recovering from a sprained ankle. He played 60 minutes on August 15th in a win
against DC United in the SuperLiga Semi-Finals. He then flew to New York the following day to
attend press junkets and media appearances all day on Friday. Saturday night, Becks went the
distance on Field Turf in the 5-4 loss to RBNY.
- Poor Victoria Beckham, if moving to a new city, not eating, and having to take care of three boys
with no money for nannies and assistants wasn't stressful enough, now she's going to have to worry
whether or not her hubby really is at practice or if he's hanging out with Rebecca Loos, his
alleged ex-mistress who is moving to Los Angeles.
- Speaking of David, the LA Galaxy have added another date to their Australia-Asia tour later this
year.
- Michel Platini has vowed not to meet directly with representatives of the G14 to discuss issues
regarding the sport in Europe and added that he did recognize the association. Not smart, Michel.
Being obstinate and unmoving in your position is only going to get a hostile reaction. Like or not,
UEFA can not survive without the 18 clubs of the G14.
LA Galaxy Alexi Lalas is hitting out at MLS for the 'ridiculous schedule' they have to play between
now and the send of the season.
"We have bent over backwards to help everybody but the Galaxy," Lalas said. "A lot of
people have made a tremendous amount of money on the back of what the Galaxy has brought to their
markets this year and I hope that they remember that going forwards.
The Beckhams--David and Victoria--have been in Los Angeles for barely two months, but their
individual careers may never be the same.
Mr. Beckham was injured this week as his Galaxy of the MLS fell in the first-ever SuperLiga final
to Mexican club Pachuca. The SuperLiga features midweek, inter-league play between the top clubs in
MLS and Mexican football.
Yesterday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber updated everyone on MLS's progress. Sadly, the league did
not stream this talk live so I was not able to watch it till today. Anyway, the big news was the
rebirth of the San Jose Earthquakes, but there were also some other points that people might find
interesting. With that in mind, here is my recap of Garber's talk.
My camera skills are poor, um, leave room for improvement. I couldn't decide whether to follow
Beckham or the ball.
Anyway, here's a clip of Beckham training with the Galaxy.
We might know by the end of the day if a German or a Dutchman will guide the Galaxy next season.
Rumor has it that Alexi Lalas and the LA franchise have narrowed their options for manager down to
Juergen Klinsmann or Ruud Gullit.
Klinsmann is the constant shinning hope of US soccer organizations as he was a fantastic player,
had a great spell coaching Germany in 2006, lives in America and knows the US game.
Reports from England suggest that former German coach Jürgen Klinsmann is close to taking over the
LA Galaxy sidelines from Frank Yallop.
Jürgen Klinsmann could be about to take over as the head coach of the Los Angeles
Galaxy after Frank Yallop, the incumbent, admitted to feeling the strain of managing a losing team
under an increased media glare since the signing of David Beckham.
David Beckham will not start for England in their fight against Croatia Wednesday night. Due to his
rash of injuries over the last eight months and his lack of pace, Steve McCalren has decided to go
with Shaun Wright-Phillips instead.
I guess Peter Crouch will have to find someone else to set him up and inspire the squad.
Here is England's starting XI:
Carson - Richards, Lescott, Campbell, A Cole - Wright-Phillips, Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, J Cole -
Crouch
In other 'the sky is falling news' for England, the pitch at the £757million ($1.
After a disgusting first half, England looked reborn in the second thanks in large part to the work
of Beckham (sub at the half) and Peter Crouch. They were down 2-0 at the half way mark, but they
were able to fight back into it thanks to a pk and a fantastic cross from Beckham to Crouch's
chest, but in the end a horrible night by Wyde Bridge and Scott Carson, combined with plenty of
other poor play are the reason England will not be in Switzerland/Austria next summer.
Former Galaxy player and brand new Red Bull Santino Quaranta is like most American soccer fans in
that he has a very strong opinion about LA's general manager Alexi Lalas. And, shock, it's not a
very happy opinion.
In his short time in Los Angeles, Quaranta has seen quite a lot. And, not
coincidentally, the craziness began with the arrival of Alexi Lalas as president and general
manager in April 2006.
If everything that is being reported is to be true, than MLS will add the San Jose Earthquakes back
to the Western Conference next season, upping the league to 14 clubs. I like this because the fan
base is already built up and with the new DPA rule in place, Lew Wolff has the perfect opportunity
to bring in a Designated player into the club at the ground floor.
Bend it like Beckham
One of the better free kick flash games I've played.
Virtual Foosball with Premiership teams
Fun, but not very hard
Stan James original free kick challenge
Probably one of the most unique and original plays on free kicks. Not easy.
Rooney on the Rampage
Very little to do with soccer other than it uses the likeness of Wayne Rooney, who gets the idea to
head butt his opponents by watching Zidane in last year's World Cup.
The MLS will expand to 14 teams next year when San Jose returns to the league and in 2009, Seattle
will join up to make it 15. What I'm wondering is, why? If anything, the league should restructure
itself to less teams and bottleneck the already watered-down talent in the league.
I mean, are they looking to make a better product or more money?
OK, so the tabloid press say David Beckham broke a rib while playing Sydney FC. They even have a
quote from him about it.
Yet he soldiered on playing the next match in Wellington. Now, of course, a broken rib isn't like
playing on an injured ankle, but still painful.
Working on an article about the tour, I decided to check with the Galaxy about David's injury.
It didn't take long for the British media to lay into the Galaxy. I'm sure most of the stories that
have come out over the last day or so could have been written shortly into the Galaxy's 3-0 loss to
Tigres on Tuesday. But they, like all of us there, had to suffer through a pathetic performance
from David Beckham's new team.
The Brits weren't kind.
At long last, it seems that Landon Donovan is finally open to the possibility of returning to
Europe to play the game, however, he is not looking for it to happen anytime soon.
"At the moment I'm happy here, at least for the next few years with Dave (Beckham) here. I want to
be a part of this too. Not many people get to be a part of this, so I want to live it.
In the wake of the World Series of Football and SuperLiga comes the latest meaningless
tournament with a grandiose name: the Pan-Pacific Championship.
Essentially a MLS pre-season tournament scheduled for February, the four-team event in Hawaii
unveiled today will involve trophy-winning teams from Japan and Australia, MLS champs the Houston
Dynamo, as well as the Galaxy, which will participate because they have David Beckham and MLS Cup
runner-up the New England Revolution doesn't.
(Summary is not available.)
The every so wonderful Wall Street Journal blares the headline David Beckham's Injury Hurts More
Than Just the Soccer Star. See if you can guess, without reading a single line, how this story
goes.
If you guessed that Beckham's absent is killing the league, you are correct.
While reading this piece by Stephen Barbara, I had to keep checking the date because it seemed like
something from August, not October.
Pele believes that the way David Beckham was introduced to the US audience was 'very, very bad'
because he was introduced as 'a scorer of goals.'
But Beckham is not the only problem he sees for MLS as he also believes that the current salary cap
is hurting the game.
Pele believes MLS players' salaries need to be raised to the level of American football
or baseball players.
The Galaxy are in New Zealand readying for their next loss, um, game on Saturday.
Actually, they should have a chance of winnning this game since the Wellington Phoenix are an
A-League expansion team currently lying seventh in the eight-team league.
Among their roster is former UC Santa Barbara defender Tony Lochhead who was drafted, but never
played, for the New England Revolution.
When David Beckham inked his deal with the L.A. Galaxy, cynics and critics all around the world
claimed that he and the missus Vicki-Something were moving to Disneyland to increase their profile.
Well, it turns out that it is Jose Mourinho, not David Beckham, who will don the famous mouse ears.
Chelsea have signed a deal with [...]
Ok, so this isn't much of a recap. I only watched the first half and evidently saw the only goals
of the game. Angel's goal was great and Toja showed the same skills that he showed at RFK last
Saturday.
So the All Star Game is over for this season, and we head up to Toronto for the next one,
woopie.
Now down to the real topics:
- I lost count at 30: the number of times the announcers said Beckham in the first half.
Alexi Lalas spoke with a group of us scribes the day before the Galaxy-D.C. SuperLiga match. Here's
audio of it, about seven minutes worth.
He hits on a lot of topics as always and really tries to absolve a lot of whatever blame there is
to go around for the Beckham situation. At one point, he even points the finger at Beckham saying
"ultimately it was the players' decision" to play against Chelsea, which Beckham admitted set him
back at least a week.
- Not only did the Bartlett High School boys soccer team lose 2-0 to Crystal Lake South in a
tournament in which they host, but when the squad returned to the locker room they found several
personal items of their's missing. The culprits? None other than 8 players from the Morton High
School side, who had used the same locker room immediately after winning their match against Jacobs
4-0 and Bartlett had vacated it to go warm up for their match.
The Galaxy won a record five in a row, which of course made their fans happy. David Beckham walked
out on the field to celebrate with the squad. He then signed some autographs, causing fans to go a
little crazy.
David Beckham will stay with the Galaxy all summer next year after England today ineptly backed
their way out of Euro 2008, despite Becks getting an assist in a 3-1 loss to Croatia.
That was about the only silver lining for the Galaxy's English fans, although the 200 crazy
Croats I watched the game with in San Pedro were pretty happy.
Despite a trademark David Beckham goal from a free kick, the Galaxy lost 5-3 to Sydney F.C.
before more than 80,000 in Australia where Tuesday night has come and gone.
New Galaxy Coach Ruud Gullit saw midfielder Kevin Harmse sent off in the supposed friendly and
shaky goalkeeper Joe Cannon was pulled at half time.
ESPN is rolling out all the stops to welcome Beckham to the America as they will broadcast his
first MLS match live. The broadcast will include19 cameras, including Skycam, super slo-mo cameras
and robotic goal cams plus the 'Beckham Cam' which will focus on Beck's every move.
The match in question is the July 21st friendly against Chelsea at 7:30pm.
England's national team coach Steve McClaren will be among the thousands of people at RFK stadium
on Thursday to watch DC United take on the LA Galaxy. McClaren will be there to talk with Beckham
regarding his recovery from injury as well as judge the standard of play in the MLS.
'I know David has been struggling with injury and has not played yet but I intend to go
over and have a chat with him to see how he is.
