The Galaxy hung on to win 3-2, but this game was much closer than it should have been.
That was partly because Colorado belatedly discovered its offense in the second half - at one
point late in the game the Rapids had out shot the Galaxy seven to one.
The Galaxy had looked to be heading for a comfortable win when Ely Allen scored his first MLS
goal of his career just after the break, getting on the end of a Pete Vagenas through ball to make
it 3-0.

The Galaxy (4-4-2) can leap frog the Rapids (5-5-0) and claim first place in the Western
Conference tonight with a win over a team they've lost to twice already this season.
Landon Donovan is away on international duty with the U.S., while David Beckham has returned
from England.
Coach Ruud Gullit has Steve Cronin in goal as usual, but makes two changes to the back four.

Now Euro 2008 is in full swing, spare a thought for those not invited to the party.
36 European nations failed to make it to the Alps. England might stand out among them, but also
missing is 2006 World Cup quarter-finalists Ukraine, plus nations of the calibre of Belgium,
Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway and Ireland.

David Beckham is back, but Landon Donovan is not for tonight's Galaxy game against the Rapids at
Home Depot Center.
Revenge is on some minds.
Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. on FSN.

This should be fun, after that 4-0 arse-whoopin' we got in March. We are certainly a better team
than the one that showed up at Dick's that day.
The Rapids, with a record of 5-5-0, are leading the Western Conference standings. However, with
their 15 points, the Rapids would only be tied for 4th in the Eastern Conference standings.

South Korea later this month, the last major tournament for the team before the Olympics begin.

The Special One has landed.
And he's already causing a stir, threatening to go on a smash and grab raid for key players from
Chelsea at the earliest opportunity, given half a chance.
Mind you if I was a Chelsea fan I would say he is welcome to Mr Droba after his antics in the
Champion's League final.

The Guardian reports that Sir Alex Ferguson has given his first full interview for nearly ten
years, with Sir David Frost the lucky interviewer (presumably it needed to be someone to match
Fergie on the prefix front). You can see the interview on Sky Sports this evening and many of his
comments are revealing, especially [.

A day after leading England to a 3-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago, David Beckham insisted (again)
that playing in MLS is no impediment to his international career. Judging by this assessment, he's
right.
Meanwhile, former England Coach Sven Goran-Ericksson was fired as Manchester City Monday as
expected and looks likely to be confirmed Tuesday as Mexico's new coach.

No Becks. No Donovan. No win for the Galaxy. Again.
"We gave the journalists ammunition to say we can't play without these two," Galaxy
coach Ruud Gullit said.
Wait a minute. That's what he said after the Rapids U.S. Open Cup game.
You get the idea.
And there was no imagination in midfield, bite in defense or (much) Alan Gordon, um, fire power
up front either.

The Galaxy plays Toronto at 12:30 p.m. on FSN without possible England captain David Beckham and
Field Turf shy Abel Xavier, but apparently motivated by AEG head honcho Tim Leiweke who told the
team to get their butts in gear - or else.
And, as usual, Beckhamania has ensued in Trinidad & Tobago.

Loved, loved, loved the captions for this week's photo. Laurie's made me
cry-laugh so unexpected, and brilliant!
So here we go, on our way to play Toronto FC. Hey, I know it will be early for you West Coast
folks, but maybe we can play a drinking game.

While the rest of Europe prepare in earnest for the upcoming European Championships, the English
are wondering what activities to indulge themselves as they licked their wounded pride. England
failed to qualify so it is hard to foresee a nation gripped by football fever. Amid this
depression, nobody paid much attention to to Fabio Capello's friendly [.

MLS Rumors 30 May @ 04:51 PM EST
Major League Soccer has yet to update its Discipline Page, but numerous outlets are reporting that
Adrian Serioux has been fined an additional $1000 for his red card-tackle on David Beckham during a
home game on 19 May. He already received the mandatory $250 fine for the red card.
The Canadian Press report states:
MLS commissioner Don Garber said the fine was imposed because of comments Serioux made to
England's Sun newspaper in February 2007, his comments afterwards and because of the challenge
itself.

It looks like the U.S. misses Landon Donovan as much as the Galaxy.
Without Donovan (tight groin) the U.S. fell 2-0 to England today in London. Chivas USA
goalkeeper Brad Guzan made a second half appearance for the U.S. to earn his sixth cap, but a
disappointing U.S. team failed to show much.

England 2 U.S. and A 0 Rubbish first half. Mildly better second half. Another insipid England
performance lacking in invention and spark. The most worrying and annoying thing is that as soon as
Capello announced his team, it was obvious that this was to be the outcome. Why Capello did not use
this friendly as an excuse to give his "fringe" players a run-out is bemusing.

It's a two for one post tonight since I just returned from the Galaxy-Colorado Rapids U.S. Open
Cup qualifier at the HDC and don't intend to rise early in the morning to blog.
The Galaxy squandered a flurry of first half chances and then fell to the Rapids on an 82nd
minute Conor Casey goal.

David Bentley still hasn't signed his new contract at Blackburn Rovers, lending further support to
the argument that the winger will be moving to pastures new in the summer. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea
appear to be in the running for the England international, who have just the 137 midfielders on
their books at the moment and could [.

A lot of people believe that the league hyped David Beckham's arrival last season mercilessly, and
it fell flat when he unfortunately was injured. But did MLS go too far the other way this season?
One reader thinks so.
New email:
The sad thing to me is that by treating Beckham like a Hollywood movie they wasted some of the
ooomph of this season's performance.

No column today after the long weekend, but the Galaxy are back in action tonight in Carson
against the Colorado Rapids in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier at Home Depot Center.
Valentin played in and started two of the three U.S. matches in France, by the way, while Gavin
and Jordan each started one.

US vs. EnglandWednesday, 3pm ET/12pm PT

England's coach Fabio Capello has named John Terry as captain for tomorrow's match against the USA

Capello said: "I told him he'll be the captain and he was very, very happy.
