Miami native, Chad Ochocinco (formerly known as Chad Johnson) is a supporter of the beautiful game
here in the United States and as evidenced by the picture supports Miami's bid for the World Cup.
The American Football star who plays for the Bengals as a wide receiver is also said to be a Fan of
the Miami FC Blues!
A bullying, selfish FIFA Confederation President pursuing his own agenda to the detriment of the
development of the beautiful game? No, not Jack Warner, but AFC boss Mohamed Bin Hammam.
That, at least, is the perspective of much of New Zealand's soccer media this week, following
the AFC's ultimatum to New Zealand's Wellington Phoenix, who play in Australia's A-League: become a
lot more Australian, or else.
Burrito is tired of all this War of the Soccer Leagues between USL and NASL!
The latest comes from Burrito's compadre Kartik. It look like USL has sued teams for breach of
contract!
Florida court documents filed on Tuesday indicate that the United Soccer Leagues have
sued the Rochester Rhinos and two other clubs for breach of contract.
Barcelona may reign in Spain when it comes to the Beautiful Game on the pitch. But rivals Real
Madrid have taken the battle to a different front by designing a sexy range of underwear. No longer
will fans have to be content with a replica jersey, scarf, mug or key-ring, supporters will soon be
able to buy boxer shorts, slips, bras and knickers.
With the World Cup Draw dominating the attention of soccer fans throughout the world, it is easy to
forget that there are soccer matches to be played this weekend.
The upcoming weekend won't have the number of high-profile matches we saw last week, but there
are still top matches on the schedule.
Your Gameweek 19 Captain, Fernando Torres
After Boxing Day, we'll be exactly
half-way through the Premier League season. Exciting stuff. We'll have 5 more months of fantasy
footie, a brilliant title race brewing, a few weeks off - and then bam: South Africa! But for now -
our attention is focused strictly on the league.
As some of you living in the United States are already well aware, Time Warner customers are in
danger of losing FOX- at least temporarily. The two companies are in bitter negotiations, and
normally - I could care less - but in this case I
obviously do, as a Time Warner
customer:
I am about to get screwed.
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi became the first Ballon D'Or winner from Argentina last night,
eclipsing runner up Cristiano Ronaldo (last year's winner) by a 240 - point margin.
Of the 10 finalists, 7 players ply their trade outside of the English Premier League - which got me
thinking, who would you love to see come over from the continent to join arguably the greatest
league in the world?
Tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams are amazing athletes
who have succeeded in a sport usually reserved for the elite. They have overcome huge obstacles to
establish themselves as two of the greatest women players of their generation, if not the best
two.
The Netherlands has produced football geniuses in all departments of the beautiful game. In the
1980's, Marcel "Marco" van Basten emerged as...
No matter which way you look at England's opening game of the 2010 World Cup against the United
States, the biggest winner will be the Premier League. Sure, the headlines will be focused on the
World Cup but after the tournament is over, the long-term winner of the increased interest in this
game will be the Premier League.
For the first time, FIFA is presenting an award for goal of the year. You can view and vote
here.
I remember watching Grafite's goal against Bayern Munich from my couch, and standing up and
shouting when I saw it live. Then I fell to my knees during the replay and made a few other noises
to show my approval.
When Jens Lehmann hangs up his boots or Sejad Salihovic's next summer, he can be sure that he
retired while he was at the top of his game. His game, of course, is not to be confused with our
game. The beautiful game. Although, depending on how you look at it, you can find [...]
I would have expected something this ill-informed from elsewhere:
I find that "big time" men's college soccer lacks all of the things that I love about
the Beautiful Game- technical ability, creativity, intelligence.
. . .
The men's game at this level might as well be played with a laced ball, goals made of wood, and
players wearing actual studded boots.
My earliest memory of the beautiful game is from my childhood in Wales playing football with my
friends in the local playground. I was probably seven or eight years old. But the event that
happened that really cemented my love of the sport was the Christmas morning when I woke up and
found a black and white leather ball at the foot of my bed.
Happy holidays to you all, my gifts to you are a few links. Enjoy.

Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson are perhaps the two
greatest RBs in the world right now. They both possess blinding speed and ridiculous physical
power. Since they were small children (like 7 years old), they have played football year
round.
The whole nation of Ireland was stunned today when FIFA rejected their request to be the additional
and 33rd team participating in next summer's World Cup. Football enthusiasts were shaken to their
very core by the surprising news. It's almost as if FIFA don't want the second most prestigious
athletic competition in human history, behind the Olympics, being compromised.
So if football is the national game, you would expect the BBC Sports Personality of the Year
shortlist to feature at least 2 or 3 leading proponents of the beautiful game.
Wayne Rooney perhaps.
Not simply for his consistent, committed and talent performances on the pitch.
But for being an 'ordinary lad' who remembers where he comes from and is learning to become master
of himself.
Associating beautiful women with the beautiful game seems like a good match.
Down under, Australia has turned to Nicole Kidman to help strengthen the country's World Cup bids
for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
Nicole Kidman is the face of Australia's new bid video, which Football Federation
Australia officials are showing to FIFA powerbrokers while world football's glitterati are gathered
in Cape Town for the highly-anticipated World Cup draw.
Back in the 1980's, Glenn Hysen was a big name in football. The former Swedish International played
for top teams IFK Goteborg, PSV Eindhoven, Fiorentina, Liverpool, and GAIS. Hysen has established
himself as a commentator, coach, reality-tv star, and blogger since retiring from the beautiful
game.
On Day 3 of SPAOTP's Advent Calendar, we bring you something to occupy your football brain in the
shape of five quiz questions.
There's no prize on offer - just the chance to show your supreme intelligence when it comes to the
beautiful game.
So here are those footy questions, and if you think you know any of the answers, leave us a comment
and we'll tell you if you're right.
Like Krishna, I too have been called back from my very long hibernation and have been asked to
write again. And while I have been basking in World Cup Glory since July 9th, 2006, the time had
come for me to come back. Adoring readers and their emails kindly requested that we start blogging
about the beautiful game again.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. It's a time to be around the house with your family,
start a fire in the living room fireplace, drink some spiked eggnog, bake some delicious X-mas
cookies, watch reruns of Christmas Vacation, and enjoy the time you have with the people
that you love.

Like mineral water and volcanic rock it seems that all money in football must now be filtered
through agents. I don't want to attack agents; it happens often enough and in my opinion they
thrive because football needs them to exist. In order to go back to ‘the good old days' we would
first have to remove 24/7 television coverage, the internet, mobile phones and players' inability
to speak for themselves.
The old adage goes that it's better to give than to receive, and for American Soccer fans, there
are many worthy soccer charities that try to make the world a better place through the beautiful
game. 2009 has been a tough year for many, but if you have a few dollars to give (and receive a tax
refund), please consider a donation (the best "nation" on earth!
Barcelona and Pohang. One is a seductive Spanish city by the deep blue sea of the Mediterranean
where locals and tourists alike wander down La Ramblas and gawp at Gaudi's Cathedral, the other is
an industrial city on the south-east coast of South Korea dominated by POSCO's massive steel
factory.
It is a harsh comparison to be honest.
Today, we got more academic with David Goldblatt's The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer.
Mr Goldblatt follows the history of the beautiful game as it rose from a local ritual to a
world-wide phenomenon. He goes on to say why soccer is poised to break out even further in the
United States. Hopefully he is right.
¡Hola mis amigos! ¿ Que tal todo?
It's been a long time since we've spoken. But I'm still around, flying the VCF colors high and
wide for all New York to see.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to write or watch VCF as much as I would like. But I think
things will change for the better in the near future.
What makes football the greatest sport in the world? What is it about a 10 inch wide sphere that
has a globe, 8000 miles wide, alternating between the throes of agony and ecstasy? If you ask me,
it all boils down to one word. Passion; an incredible amount of which is involved in the beautiful
game.
These dreidels are totally trying to play the beautiful game, just lack the ball.
Which sport has the best set of fans?
Football or rugby? Which are more passionate, more loyal, more knowledgeable and which generate
the more infectious atmospheres?
There is only one answer as far as I am concerned and it's not the group of egg-chasing
enthusiasts.
West Ham United player Dean Ashton has retired at age 26. The English player has retired from the
beautiful game after a serious injury. He spent the whole 2006-2007 season injured. This August,
Ashton attempted training with the first team. Ashton told the Sun, "I went to do a jog around the
pitch, but at the end of second lap, I was struggling.
If you're like me, you probably find that it's getting harder and harder to watch Premier League
games without being interrupted. And the interruptions are sometimes my own fault whether it's my
laptop and my inclination to open as many tabs as possible on my Chrome browser. Or my addiction to
Twitter, or the ability to watch more than one Premier League game at a time.
Big Story
In the end, my wife was right (shh). We were both sitting at home yesterday afternoon (don't ask),
and I wanted to put on the Man Utd-Wolves game at Old Trafford on the TV. Hell, it was bonus
Premier League midweek football, right? Well, quite frankly, she wasn't having it.
There's been a lot of chatter here recently on EPL Talk about different cultures, stereotypes
(good or bad), likes and dislikes, etc. Since it's all opinion in the end, let's see if we can't
spread a little love 'round these here parts, if not for your fellow man, then for none other than
the spirit of the season.
For the last couple weeks, I've been ruminating on some way to close out the Elizabeth Lambert
saga. And lo and behold: Time Magazine has dropped that way right into my lap by naming Lambert as
one of the top ten pariahs of 2009.
The list places Lambert in the company of Bernie Madoff, who cost investors $20 billion dollars in
his ponzi scheme; Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, who cost US Bank shareholders billions in the
acquisition of Merrill Lynch; convicted domestic abuser Chris Brown; Lockerbie bombing convict
Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi; baloon-boy's dad, who invented a hoax that cost local governments
thousands and could land him in jail; corrupt politician Rod Blagojevich; and convicted child
rapist Roman Polanski.
We at AANP Towers are generally peace-loving folk, but amongst the few things that have us
stomping our feet in apoplexy is the brand of anti-football purveyed by Sam Allardyce.
History is littered with epic confrontations – Good against Evil; Beauty against the Beast
(not sure that was a fight actually); Bruce Willis against Hans Grüber and his henchmen.
