5 Transfers Which You May Have Missed This Summer

EPL Talk at related • 0 views

It has been a quiet season on the transfer front if your name isn't Roberto Mancini. Of the teams who finished in the top 4 very few ‘big' transfers have been made. Sure we are excited by the prospect of Chamakh and Chicarcito (who scored AGAIN last night against Spain) but their transfers do not create the same commotion as the saga's of Ashley Cole, Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The January Transfer Window Round Up…

A poem to round up the January Transfer window...

A strange one, I have got to say. With Fernando and Carroll the shocks of the day. Blackpool did well to get Beattie and Reid, and kept Charlie Adam away from the team that lead...

Steven Ireland (Newcastle), Eidur Gudjohnsen (Fulham), Â and Daniel Sturridge (Bolton) go out on loan, they all took the car, no helicopter was flown.

The Ladies went ahead after twelve minutes through Helen Lander but then went off the boil a bit before half time. Milwall had many chances to nab an equaliser, but failed to take any of them.

Catching Up with the Reds

The Offside - Toronto FC at related • 1 view

It's gone quiet around these here parts the last couple of weeks. My apologies, I had some urgent family matters come up and I didn't have time for the blog. The Reds were busy though, so let me try to catch up as best I can:

• The remaining fixtures in Turkey saw TFC beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 and lost to Dinamo Zagreb 3-1, giving the Reds a preseason record of 1-1-1

• Trialists Bas Ent and Santiago Gonzalez Acero have been released by TFC while Steven Beattie has chosen to focus on his studies at university

• A Dutch newspaper reported that TFC have signed trialists Javier Martina, Elbekay Bouchiba and Nick Soolsma.

NOT SO FRIENDLY
As Aron Winter gets used to life in the weird and wonderful world of North American football he will stumble across continental oddities that get under his skin. During a media scrum at TFC's Oakville training facility this week, the manager was grumbling about upcoming friendlies against other MLS clubs and mentioning he wouldn't have allowed it if he had it his way.

I am guessing that these young men just won a free trip to Turkey where Toronto FC is opening their training camp next month.

Rangers 3 v Kilmarnock 0
Some wag (me) suggested on Twitter last night that this would have been a more effective Beattie to play up front for Rangers.

Not that it mattered as the home side - who were more than happy to dish out a few brutal challenges - overpowered a fairly ineffective Kilmarnock.

It's maybe to our shame that those of us who don't count ourselves as Kilmarnock supporters might never have heard of Frank Beattie, whose funeral takes place tomorrow.Beattie, or Big Frank, played for Kilmarnock from 1953 to 1972, playing over 600 games in his one club career, earning the love and respect of the fans as the "heart and soul" of the side.

After revealing the most common firstnames in Premier and Football League football (2009/2010 season) yesterday I thought it'd be nice to do the same for surnames. Smith, Johnson, Taylor and Jones were the four most frequently seen names last season and are the only ones you could use to field a full XI.

Of course, that is how a child deals with disappointment. In that sense, football makes us all children again in different ways. During moments of absolute glory, we, as supporters, experience a heightened sense of joy that those who do not follow football, or other sports, as intensely as we do will likely never feel.

Stoke City were very, very good to me last season. Their fixture list fell just perfect so that their last few months were a cake walk. Not that I cleaned up, but I did get good returns from Lawrence, Beattie and Wilkinson. Meanwhile, Fuller and Shawcross were point machines.

Now it's second season syndrome.

If the 2011 MLS Draft wasn't enough of an event for you to get your off-season fix, then today's MLS Supplemental Draft should offer an appetizer for those who love seeing their teams add new faces.

There is some talent left that went undrafted last week, particularly non-American college players who teams passed on because they would take up international player slots.
