We're not playing Barbados anymore, I don't think Guatemala has to put up ads looking for players
on their federation website.
The semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying begins tonight, with the US playing probably its most
difficult game of the round first. Guatemala should advance with the US into the Hex, and this game
will be a chance to gauge where both teams stand.
I just wanted to include a link and comment on this article by Kartik Krishnaiyer on the Major
League Soccer Talk blog about Sven Goran Eriksson's early success with the Mexican national team
and how the U.S. National Team could learn from that. I essentially agree that Eriksson has done a
good job with Mexico and that I too was somewhat skeptical about this appointment when it was made.
Bob Bradley named the squad that is going to face Guatemala in the upcoming World Cup qualifier and
while looking through the roster the question that comes to my mind is - don't we have a better
team then this? Hasn't the time for Eddie Lewis, Frankie Hejduk, and Pablo Mastroeni come and gone?
Who is being looked to as the main goalscorer - Landon Donovan?

Now that the really hard work has been done, it is time for the U.S. men's national team to
finish off its World Cup qualifying group.
The Americans can essentially do just that on Wednesday when it takes on Trinidad & Tobago at
Toyota Park on Wednesday.
US vs. Barbados

The US is less then an hour away from starting their long road to South Africa and Bob Bradley has
released his lineup. Needless to say, there are a couple surprises. First of all, Guzan will start
in goal instead of Tim Howard.
US 8-0 Barbados
Anyway you look at this, it was a great way for the US to start their World Cup run. This was the
expected result and the team lived up to it, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for
improvement. With that in mind, here are the player grades:
Starting XI
Brad Guzan (GK) - What a boring way to up your international appearance numbers.
US midfielder Maurice Edu agreed to a five-year deal with Glasgow Rangers on Scotland's Premier
League. The transfer fee for Edu was right around the $5 million mark for MLS and Toronto FC. Edu
joins fellow US National team member DeMarcus Beasley on the Rangers roster. Edu must still secure
a UK work permit, but if [.
The title of this post refers to the age of a player for a particular season. I set a specific age
for a player in each season, which is something commonly done on baseball sites. That way, you can
look at a player's stats and say, ok, he was 22 during that year. Then you can easily compare his
age 22 year to those of other players.
As reported in an article by the New York Times, it appears that Maurice Edu from Toronto F.C. and
also recently on the U.S. Olympic team, is going to be transferred to Glasgow Rangers, possibly to
replace Carlos Cueller who recently was sold to Aston Villa. Even I have to admit that this is a
great move for Edu as Rangers are a very big club within the Scottish Premier League and even in
the context of Europe (despite their recent setback of getting knocked out of the Champions
League).
US 1-0 Barbados
In a game that saw the favorites look tired and even more defensive minded then normal, the
underdogs had their chance to run the game. But unlike the Italy-Spain Euro match, the US was able
to see their opposition out of the competition.
Yesterday's game was a flashback for me as right from the opening moments, it reminded me of some
late-80's games due to the horrible video production.
We've taken the player ratings from America's most respected soccer writers and averaged them, in
an attempt to provide an informed, unbiased assessment of the U.S.A.'s performance against Cuba.

Oguchi 5.
Here is an excellent article from Kartik Krishnaiyer on the MLS Talk blog that goes through the
differences between the managing styles of Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley, and also provides some
interesting thoughts on the recent callups that Bob Bradley has made for the U.S. National Team.
For the most part, I agree with Kartik's column, but I disagree with the comments he made about
Clint Dempsey.
Aw, ain't he cute? This is the only picture I took at USMNT training yesterday, because then my
battery died. Luis took a bunch today, though. So before he puts all those up, I thought I'd put
mine here.
DaMarcus talked about how he had to be patient with his latest injury - and how he sometimes wasn't
patient, yelling at James Hashimoto, the U.
Just another thought here. Excepting today's rout of Barbados it seems that the USMNT is still
lacking a consistent finisher up top. Does Buddle deserve another look?
I have to say that Eddie Johnson has been unimpressive as of late. He's a bit lumbering. And
Ching, while providing a great target in the air, is not as impressive in creating chances.

US Coach Bob Bradley has taken most of the players from his recent three-match run against world powers to take on lowly Barbados on Sunday at the Home Depot Center (5p ET, ESPN2). The roster...
G: Cervi, Guzan, Howard
D: Bocanegra, Califf, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Hejduk, Oneywu, Pearce
M: Adu, Beasley, Bradley, Edu, Klejstan, Lewis, Mastroeni
F: Ching, Dempsey, Donovan, Johnson
My probables to take on the 121st-ranked Barbadans.
Kickoff is inside half an hour, here's the U.S. line-up: Howard; Hejduk, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Pearce,
Bradley, Edu, Dempsey, Beasley, Donovan, Ching Subs: Guzan, Califf, Wynne, Clark, Kljestan, Lewis,
Johnson I highly doubt this will be a good night for the hosts. The Americans have something to
prove and Cuba aren't nearly as cultured as Guatemala.
USA vs. Barbados USA embark on the road to South Africa 2010 wondering who will score their goals.
Their three-match swing against England, Spain, and Argentina ended goalless, and of the seven
goals scored in 2008 only two came from a striker (Altidore and Donovan). The team is also very
much in transition -- eight players of the 21-man squad have never played in a World Cup qualifier,
including four in midfield.
It's a cliche that there are no style points in World Cup qualifying. Just results. The US embodied
that cliche last night in a 1-0 victory in Guatemala City in a match that announcer Glenn Davis
correctly called a "street fight."
The US did a few things right, plenty wrong, and a few not so well in taking three away points to
start the semifinal round of WC 2010 CONCACAF qualifying.
If you're watching the US' world cup qualifier tonight, this is the place for discussion.
You'll find the lineup after the jump, and any thoughts on it are welcome. Howard
Cherundolo Onyewu Bocanegra(c) Pearce Kljestan -Bradley -Dempsey Donovan Beasley Ching - What do
you think?

DaMarcus Beasley didn't score but he played a valuable role in the midfield on Sunday. Seems like
he's recovered from his knee injury just fine.
