A young Liverpool fan standing in the front row behind Pepe Reina's goal during today's match in Sunderland was having a grand time knocking a Liverpool beach ball (you can see the club crest in the above image) around...until he knocked it onto the pitch and it deflected Darren Bent's shot to give Sunderland what would be the only goal of the match.

I was in a pub in Århus, casually, and started watching the Premier League match between Sunderland and Liverpool. Not long into the match, saw one of the strangest goals I have seen: Glen Johnson shot on goal for Sunderland, and a beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch got in the way of the ball, changing its trajectory into Liverpool's goal.

How beach balls can be used to help, not hinder Leeds keeper Shane Higgs showed Pepe Reina a thing or two about putting beach balls to good use when he blockaded most of his goal with inflatables ahead of last night's clash with Norwich. This is fairly amusing. What is probably not so amusing is that the person who was dumb enough to throw the beach ball onto the pitch is probably so dumb as to probably boast about his deeds and in the long run possibly have an unfortunate accident.

Considering we've now only scored one goal in three outings, two of those at home, there is a worry that we may begin to shoot more blanks. The Newcastle front line has been fairly toothless and a lack of creative spark from midfield means we're struggling to make many chances and when they do, the [.

That's Leeds goalkeeper Shane Higgs warming up with a wall of beach balls prior to Monday night's match against Norwich at Elland Road. Leeds went on to win 2-1 on an injury time goal from Jermaine Beckford, but Higgs turned out to be in no position to be laughing at others, as he was substituted after just 17 minutes for looking shaky in his first match back from injury.

Another weekend of Premier League football and another surprising set of results, proving once again that this is shaping up to be the closet league for many years and it's about time too. For us neutrals the Premier League was slowly starting to resemble it's neighbors north of the boarder, with a top four (rather then a top two) dominating both the league and cup competitions.

Not only did Liverpool shockingly defeat Manchester United 2-0, bringing an abrupt end to their apocalyptic free-fall and the imminent sacking of Rafa Benitez, but their fans also beat United fans by being the first to barrage the pitch with the inevitable storm of beach balls.

Though the word was that United fans had bought up all the official Liverpool beach balls like the one that scored Sunderland's winning goal the weekend before and had been eagerly planning to mock their Anfield hosts with them on Sunday, it was Liverpool fans in the Kop end that were first to toss their banned inflatables just before kickoff.
