Tonight, David Beckham will receive a lifetime achievement award from the BBC. There are few
people that would argue that David Beckham has not achieved a lot in his lifetime. Both on and
off the field, he has left a dent not only on the game but he has also helped to shape the broader
cultural context surrounding the sport.

You don't need me to tell you that the notion of D-Becks (aged 35) getting a 'Lifetime
Achievement' award – as he did at last night's BBC Sports Personality show – is absurd. You
could tell that Sir Bobby Charlton thought as much, not only by looking at his stone face up on
stage but also when he was asked by the host to laud Beckham and could only describe him as a
"pleasant" lad.
After picking up a BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement, David Beckham revealed that he
might return to Manchester United one day.
"I've missed playing in the Premier League since I left it seven years ago now," said
Beckham. "It's one of the most competitive leagues in the world and maybe one day I'll come
back and play here, but I've always said it will only be for Manchester United.

Outside of the UK, it's a little known fact that British people are prohibited from commencing
their celebration of the festive period until the winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year
has been announced.
