The comments of the host of The Football League Show, Manish Bhasin, over the whereabouts of his show in the BBC schedules over the festive break have been causing social media no little disquiet over the last couple of days or so. This morning, though, a chink of light was granted into a possible reason behind why Bhasin was being so forthright on the subject, with rumours starting to appear in the press suggesting that the corporation is not going to renew its option on the programme come the end of this season.

I remember reading about Liverpool's issues in front of goal a while ago. This article on the BBC Football site has some key details, and The Times ran a chart in yesterday's edition talking about the same thing (behind a paywall, sadly).

The point of all this is that Liverpool are having a terrible time converting their shots to goals, and at that point were only scoring with 10% of their shots.

Watford FC: Laurence Bassini Is Unwell

I was still researching Watford owner Laurence Bassini's last no-show at a fans' forum when the headline "Watford owner to face fans' Q&A" appeared on the BBC Football website's homepage. By the time I'd done my research and clicked onto the story itself, Bassini had "no-shown" again. It is remarkable and depressing the lengths to which some fans will go to justify actions taken by their own club and/or its owners.

There has long been a strand of anti-intellectualism within football which can occasionally be somewhat distasteful, to say the least. It's the culture that saw Graeme Le Saux labelled as "gay" because he read a broadsheet newspaper and collected antiques. It's a culture that keeps professional footballers in a state in artificial infantilism until the end of their careers in the misguided belief that this will engender some sort of "team spirit".

Football seems to have a funny way of making sure justice is done in the end. 15 years after Torquay survived in the Football League at the expense of Stevenage, justice was served yesterday when Boro beat the Gulls to win promotion to the 3rd tier in English Football.

You could frame it. If you wanted a short, pithy representation of all that has been wrong with football finance in 2010, you could do no better than quote a Plymouth Argyle fan known as "Sensible Surfer" on the BBC Football website over the Christmas period. "Ridsdale set to take control.
