A completely new radio station hits the airwaves in Southend on Friday. Southend
Radio fought off competition from three other bids two years ago. Now, after all the
planning and hard work the station will start broadcasting from 8am.
The station has been funded by Phillip Miller - owner of Adventure Island - a man who has put a lot
of effort into regenerating the seafront and invested a great deal of time in the town.
Final preparations are being made at Southend's Priory Park as the usually serene space makes way
for Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on Sunday evening (29th June).
The show - which attracted 3,600 people last year - is making a welcome return to the area, and
this year Jools has invited Soft Cell lead singer Marc Almond along to perform
with him.
