You here it all the time, "So and so is a big club." Just what does that mean,
anyhow?
Well, looking at average attendance for last season alone (the figures once again courtesy of the
good folks at European Football Statistics), the following are Europe's 13 biggest clubs.
(Note: Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium has a capacity of 60,432, so the
Gunners are certainly top-10 material, but for the sake of keeping the data set comparable, they
were not included.
I am no Bayern Munich sympathizer, but their last-gasp defeat to Manchester United in the 1999 UEFA
Champions League final (thanks to two extra-time goals) still brings me no joy. What a cruel way to
lose.
