In the light of ever more Hoffenheim table topping, coverage and hype, I thought it might be
interesting to take a look at how much of their success is Dietmar Hopp's money and how much of it
is Ralf Rangnick's genius. While at it, I decided to do the same for the remaining 17 Bundesliga
[...]
1. It's the knockout rounds, stupid. Going by league and group stage performances, Tim Wiese
clearly looks the better keeper than Manuel Neuer. Blunders against Valencia and Chelsea in the
group stages and a couple more in the Bundesliga had taken Neuer from Jogi Löw's shortlist for the
Euro 2008. Tim Wiese isn't on it either, [.
The Bundesliga is still in hibernation, while all other big European leagues are already fully
enjoying their second half of the season. It's a little excercise in delayed gratification I guess.
Here's some numerical evidence to prove that it will at least be worth the wait. The numbers are
coming from a Setanta Sports article [.

I spent my weekend telling lies to my relatives, which depending on their age were about bunnies
and candy, and depending on their favourite team, were about how Hamburg or Bremen still have a
chance of winning the title. It was an entertaining diversion from the world of hard facts and
truth here at the [.
1. Nothing. The teams at the top of the table couldn't win their games. The teams at the bottom of
the table didn't lose their games. As such no team gained a lot of ground, nor did any team lose a
lot of ground. And if the six best teams in the league don't do their [...]
Undoubtedly, the minute I post this, Ronaldo will give up on Real Madrid and move to Hamburg, so
forgive me for being premature. Let's take a look, as the season begins, at the seven best signing
so far this summer in the Bundesliga. Christian Fuchs (SV Mattersburg to Bochum) Austria entered
the [.
Welcome back to Bundesliga Statistics for week two. Standing alone at the head of the table? Newly
promoted TSG 1899 Hoffenheim with two wins from their first two games. Astounding stuff, but we're
here to talk numbers not newcomers. Last week five categories were featured, this week it's been
expanded to [.
A hat trick by Patrick Helmes and an unrelenting offense saw Bayer Leverkusen take apart Hannover
96 tonight. The illness and injury riddles Reds, were humiliated by Bayer 04, but also their lack
of fight as they seemed disinterested in the proceedings. Bayer have the most fluid attack in the
Bundesliga with [.
Eintracht Frankfurt 4 - 0 Hannover 96
The route was on in Frankfurt as Eintracht scored 4 goals in the shutout victory. Former AEK Athens
striker Nikos Liberopoulos paced the winners with a brace.
FC Schalke 04 3 - 1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Halil Altıntop scored twice as Schalke 04 gears up for midweek UEFA Cup
action.
Why Bayern Munich will win the title If Bayern's rivals had plans to beat them to the title, they
should have done so in the first half of the season. Because in the second half of the season,
Bayern have the matchday schedule on their side in a big way: Bayern - Bremen Bayern - HSV Schalke
- Bayern Bayern [.
1. If Bayern play bad their rivals will play worse. Or at least drop points, while Bayern won't.
Let's take Hamburg for this weekend's example. They played a toothless first half, went down 0-1
and then needed an improved second half to draw the match against Hanover. Bayern played a good
first half, went up 2-0 [.
1. A lesson in the fine art of self destruction by Schalke 04. The merits of having the club's
president publicly lame ducking a coach are generally questionable. Doing so ahead of two of the
most crucial fixtures of the season is attention seeking, mistimed and pure idiocy at best. While
Schalke's sporting director Andreas Müller [.
A look at Bayer Leverkusen's Bruno Labbadia concludes our The New Gaffer: Introducing... series
this week. So far we've examined, in order: the journeyman, the company man, the stranger and, er,
Martin Jol. Labbadia is a mix between a poor man's Jürgen Klinsmann and a poor man's Christian
Bale (take a look!
1. Hamburg SV HSV have just opened up a cemetary next to the Nordbank Arena. With Martin Jol
leading the way, Hamburg top the table for the first time in nine years. Meanwhile, the big man's
old club are in last place in the EPL. Supporters of Tottenham Hotspur are putting in [...]
Football is not always a beautiful game; sometimes bookings are necessary. Thankfully, we're on
hand to keep all these bookings straight. There are 34 distinct offences that the DFB considers
bookable. In their honor I've written this paean to the punished: We are here not to castigate but
to celebrate these masters of [.
Here's this week's Bundesliga XI. It is packed with Bayer 04, Hoffenheim and Werder players. It
does include a special shoutout to the man who ended Energie's goal drought, an under appreciated
defender from Arminia and a goalkeeper who lost. 1. Schalke 04 Now 10 of their last 13 have been
scored by defenders.
The future is now as Germany are hit by injury to Robert Enke. Not that I wanted any injury to
Enke, as I think he is a fantastic keeper and seems like an all around good guy; however, he has
broken his hand during the run up to this round of World Cup qualifiers [...]

SV The Dinosaurs face Schalke in the most intriguing game of the weekend. They have lost three of
the last four matches against the Royal Blues at Nordbank. Chances for this weekend's game don't
seem great with Nigel de [.
...lasts 9 minutes and 54 seconds and spans two rock songs and such illustrious clubs as 1860
Munich, Werder Bremen, AS Roma, Olympique Marseille and Bayer Leverkusen.
1. Nuremberg can no longer finish their matches. Last week Nuremberg's match against Frankfurt was
stopped for 20 minutes, after some people from Nuremberg's travelling support burned firecrackers
and threw a flare onto the pitch. This Friday Nuremberg's match against Wolfsburg got abandoned
after heavy rain rendered the pitch unplayable.
1. The truth behind Mirko Slomka's dismissal. Mirko Slomka got fired on Sunday. The same Sunday
Kevin Kuranyi put on his serious face and told reporters that Schalke had lost a very good coach,
who every player loves to work with. Then he put on his sad face. Then he said OK. Then he drove
away [...]
Bayern Munich is the 5th most valuable football club in the world, followed by Schalke 04 in 10th,
Dortmund in 15th, Hamburg in 17th and Bremen in 18th position. Don't take Forbes' data about the
clubs too literally though. They will try and tell you that Schalke is owned by the Veltins
brewery. (Forbes) Mad Jens [.
I have the rare honour to spell the names Valeri Domovchiyski and Lukas Sinkiewicz in the same
sentence. Valeri plays for Hertha and Lukas play for Leverkusen. The two played against each other
on Wednesday. Hertha ended up putting more misery on Leverkusen and more pressure on Michael
Skibbe, as they won the match 2-1.
It's season review time to bridge the gap between now and the Euros or the next Rafael van der
Vaart transfer saga. It was a good season for... Money. The three biggest spenders this season -
based on their transfer deficit - were Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and second division side
Hoffenheim. Bayern's millions bought them a double, [.

The Olympics took center stage this week, not just on the world stage, but also in our blogs... Our
Bremen blogger Brian looked at Diego's Olympic club vs country saga from all possible angles.
(Werder Offside) Replace Diego with Rafinha and then our new Schalke blogger Jon basically did what
Brian did.
1st Schalke What You Know: If baseball's Chicago Cubs had a baby with the Red Sox prior to 2004,
Schalke would be the offspring. What You Don't: All things both good and bad must end. What to
Expect: Yes, Campeones! I say that, bucking all trends, and knowing full well that Schalke could be
leading the league by 6 [.
If you're anything like me, you love reveling in statistics. While in isolation, especially at the
beginning of the Bundesliga season, they don't reveal much. But as time goes on it should be
possible to discern patterns between some of these statistics and how the table shakes out. Here
are some of the [.

of the 2009-2010 Bundesliga season.

Edin Dzeko Against Cottbus 1. Bayer Leverkusen The subtitle to their season should be "how we
got to the top with a crap defense". They conceded goals by a misdirect from the wall on a
free kick, allowing Tim Sebastian to waltz freely on another and letting 5'9 Iashvilli outjump a
defender. If it [.

They are making jokes about Bielefeld's (ex-)coach of the century (Power) Ernst Middendorp down in

1. Sotirios Kyrgiakos is the Bundesliga's Marco Matterazzi. It wasn't a World Cup final, it has yet
to prove to be title deciding, but it at least shares some similarities with the infamous incident.
Diego is - statistically approved - the most fouled player in the Bundesliga. A little fact that
coincides with him being the [.
...the Bundesliga Offside team of bloggers came to the following conclusions this week: Abby
concluded that Bielefeld does exist (potentially). (Hertha Offside) Jan concluded that the UEFA
Intertoto Cup is a trophy every team should strive to win. (Bundesliga Offside) Chris concluded
that Rene Adler is a great goalkeeper.
1. Luca Toni goes down easily. Call him a diver or an opportunist. When Bayern were trailing 1-0 at
Cottbus, Luca Toni worked the slightest contact to his maximum advantage. He lost control of his
body, fell to the ground and was awarded a questionable penalty for his troubles. But it was meant
to be Cottbus' [.
1. Bayern's bench-warmers like their warm benches. One of the benefits of Ottmar Hitzfeld's
rotation policy is that someone like Jan Schlaudraff gets to play the odd 15 minutes now and then.
It can help keep the players in the squad happy, because they'll get their chances and playing
time. Though, judging by Bayern's performance against [.
1. Only math stands in Bayern's way now. Bayern beat Stuttgart 4-1 on Sunday. Angela blogged about
how it happened and then Anna blogged about why it happened. Now I blog about how Bayern top the
table with a 12 point lead. 20 goals stand between them and Werder Bremen. 24 goals stand between
them and [.
