The yearly list of football club annual revenue is out yet again and the gap between the two
Spanish behemoths and the rest of the field is growing ever wider. Despite the trophy success of
last year, Barcelona has lost the financial Clasico to Real Madrid...yet again (lucky number seven
in a row) and it wasn't terribly close.
I know I've banged the drum about this before but in light of recent developments, I feel it needs
to be said again: Basel midfield maestro Xherdan Shaqiri is available for transfer right now for a
comparatively cheap price, and Liverpool would be mad to miss out on this golden opportunity to
sign the Swiss International.
With only 8 days until the January transfer window closes, it looks increasingly unlikely that
Liverpool will bring any new players to Anfield. Kenny Dalglish has stated that he expects a 'quiet
window', but if the Bolton game proved anything it's that the club is desperate for a striker and
(arguably) a pacy attacking midfielder.
Two goals from Patrick Herrmann and another from highly rated forward Marco Reus guided Borussia
Monchengladbach to a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich, cutting the Bavarians' lead atop the Bundesliga
table to a single point.
Bastian Schweinsteiger struck late in the match for Bayern, but that was too little too late for
the visitors, who could be joined at the summit by defending champions Borussia Dortmund over the
weekend.

Like James Brown and his brand new bag, Manchester United have rediscovered their "groove".
For a team supposedly in crisis, this win – and indeed, the general response post-Basel –
serves as an emphatic reminder to the critics that they are very much still a force. Ryan Giggs
perfectly summed up what was so good about Manchester United's performance against Fulham last
night: "When you have so many options on the ball – people running in behind, people dropping in
the hole – we're a very difficult team to play," Giggs eulogised after the impressive 5-0
win.

Old rivals Manchester United and Liverpool are both attempting to land the player dubbed the next
Lionel Messi as they try and convince Xherdan Shaqiri to make the move to the Premier League.
Shaqiri has been one of the stand out performers for Basel this season and was instrumental in
helping the Swiss side knock Manchester United out of the Champions League.
Two wins out of two, six goals scored and only one conceded post the black, dark and gloomy night
of Basel. The first performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers was very good as we banged in

There are a couple of problems with waking up at 6.30 AM Central Time to catch a lunch-time
kickoff on a Sunday. One, it's really early for a Sunday morning, and your system has not
really slept off/flushed out everything that went into it on the Saturday night. Secondly, when
they say lunch-time, they apparently mean noon.

Let's start with the obvious shall we. The Champions League draw takes precedent and rightly so.
The biggest tournament in club football today and the 2nd round draw took place without any
Manchester clubs in it. For our efforts of finishing top of our group, we were rewarded with a date
against AC Milan.

Manchester United put the demons of the terrible disappointment of being knocked out in the
Champions League to rest by crushing Wolves 4-1 at Old Trafford. Much has been said and will, no
doubt, be said about United's defeat against Basel that ended their Champions League campaign
prematurely, but the Champions responded in the best [.
1. Well that was just the kind of performance we needed following the devastating result in
Basel this week. We passed the ball around well and at long last put away a good number of the
chances we created. Only Swansea have a worse away record than Wolves though and after playing
them, it is obvious why.

Demoralised Manchester United fans had feared the worst after their captain, Nemanja Vidic, was
stretchered off during that disastrous Champions League exit in Basel during the week. And now,
those fears have been realised, with Sir Alex Ferguson revealing that the Serbian centre-half would
miss the rest of the season with knee ligament damage.
The last round of matches of the group stages of the 2011-12 Champions League had a couple of
surprises.Firstly, Manchester United was elminated for the first time in the group stages of the
tournament since the 2005-06 season. More surprising than this fact is nevertheless that it
happened against the underestimated FC Basel in the last match of the tournament, where the English
side needed only
Following recent statement regarding Nemanja Vidic's injury status which previously arrived from
the player's agent, Manchester United's manger, Sir Alex Ferguson has now confirmed that the
Serbian international won't be available for the rest of this season.
Fergie revealed that the situation has actually been predicted by United's medical team, stating
that the player will immediately see a specialist and get an operation once the swollen on the knee
gets better.

"Thursday nights, Channel 5!" was a chant designed by Manchester United fans when Liverpool failed
to get a top four spot in 2010, but expect it to be heard more often the next few months. United's
loss to Basel was excruciating, humiliating, and painful. Memories of Benfica and the failings of
the 2005/06 season were [.
Sir Alex Ferguson look's a forlorn figure as he try's to explain how his side lost to Basel in
Switzerland and exited what he believes is the greatest competition in the World. To be honest I've
never seen the great man look and sound so miserable!
Manchester United were dumped out of Europe's elite cup competition after a 2-1 defeat to Basel so
it is adios to the Champions League and hello to the UEFA Europa League! The draw for the Europa

Here's my Hat Trick:
1. Well, yesterday was certainly interesting in UEFA Champions League qualifying. Both mighty
Manchester teams suffered quite the disgrace in failing to move into the final round of 16 in the
Champions League. Manchester City, despite an obscenely rich owner, will now have to look to the
Europa League for some hardware.
Not for the first time this season, Manchester United pressed the self-destruct button in Europe
when losing 2-1 against Basel in Switzerland last night, a result which sees the champions dropping
into the Europa League. It is nothing short of an unmitigated disaster for Ferguson, his players
and the club.

This just wasn't a good day for Manchester. First United lost to Basel... sorry, still laughing at
that... and then despite beating Munich 2-0, City is knocked out as well thanks to a Napoli win

On another night of drama in the Champions League Lyon, Basel and Napoli all moved onto the
round of 16, while last season's beaten finalist Manchester United was sent to the Europa
League.
The most unlikely team to progress to the knock stages was Lyon, who needed Ajax to lose at home
to Real Madrid while they beat Dinamo Zagreb and overturned a seven-goal
deficit.

Anyone taking a bet at the start of the season would not have been able to predict how this
would all end up. Manchester City and Manchester United kissed goodbye to the Champions League this
season, and there were few mitigating factors that they could cite as a defence. Manchester United
can point to their injury list and Manchester City can invoke their inexperience, but ultimately
both clubs have resources that dwarf almost all others in Europe.
Manchester United failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time
since the 2005-06 season, after losing 2-1 in Basel on a disappointing night. Last year's finalist
paid the price for making a mess of what was widely regarded to be the easiest group in the
competition and stumbled to [.
