Charles Itandje's Liverpool career could be in jeopardy following allegations that he behaved
inappropriately at Wednesday's Hillsborough memorial service.
Television footage of the event appeared to show the out of favour keeper fooling around during the
ceremony and senior officials at Liverpool are already looking into the incident with a view to
taking disciplinary action against him.
Transfer campaign has hit the boiling point and many of the players from English lower tiers have
been in the heat over the past couple of days. Let's start chronologically, from our last briefing.
Firstly, Bristol City striker, Steve Brooker, has finally become a Doncaster member and Sean
O'Driscol's wish has finally come true.
here does the future lie for Adam Hammill? On one end of the scale, there's the new contract that
he signed at Liverpool last summer which would indicate that he has a role to play in Rafael
Benitez's plans. Yet, at the same time, he has been constantly loaned out to Championship clubs
without really making much of an impact.
A few updates on members of Les Rosbifs, some potential members and some who have appeared or
disappeared from the list in recent days. Some recent discoveries have originated from emails
received or through the good people on the SI Games community forums. An interesting case was
brought to my attention by Mike Crocombe via email, [.
The term hero, legend, great, superstar and even celebrity are widely over used in the world today
and have now been over used in the sporting world too, none more so than football.
Players become celebrities before they are even greats of the game, it's a crying shame, it
really is.
Here's a brief update on a story we had speculated on earlier in the day. Toronto FC and Rohan
Ricketts have agreed to a deal that will release the winger from his guaranteed contract in a move
announced by the club early this afternoon via a brief press release. He had been scheduled to make
$165,000 for the 2009 season.
Coca Cola Championship side Barnsley have officially revealed their new home kit to be worn during
the 2009-10 season. The shirt is primarily red in colour. There is a distinctive white trim on the
sleeves and at the bottom as well as white strips emphasizing the shoulder area. White shorts and
red socks complete the strip.

Eight Manchester Supporters were arrested after United's 2-0 League Cup victory over Barnsley at
Oakwell last night.
This is Fabio
At least that's what Manchester United is saying.
Sir Alex Ferguson played both twin Brazilian brothers, Rafael & Fabio Silva, in their Carling
Cup match against Barnsley. En route to winning, Rafael fouled Jamal Campbell-Ryce and earned
himself a yellow card; however Referee Chris Foy put brother Fabio in the book.
In last week's 2-0 victory over Barnsley we were forced to see out another League Cup with ten
men following Gary Neville's sending off.
Just days after losing at Anfield, passionate scouse-hater Neville left a foot in on Liverpool
supporting Adam Hammill after winning the ball.
Sir Alex Ferguson conceded the referee was "probably correct" to send Neville off but our
captain isn't so sure.
A number of new additions have cropped up in recent days too, primarily in Scotland as I have
worked at ensuring the list is up-to-date for the four divisions north of the border. Someone who
has not been mentioned yet is new Celtic manager Tony Mowbray. The former Middlesbrough and Celtic
defender, who has previously [.
The preseason for the European clubs is winding down as most leagues are set to begin in the
next few weeks. Here are video highlights for several of Saturday's friendlies including Chelsea v
Reading, Burnsley v Manchester City, Celtic v Sunderland, and Derby County v Stoke City.
Celtic (1) – Sunderland (2) – Friendly – Saturday August 1, 2009
Derby County (2) – Stoke City (2) – Friendly – Saturday August 1, 2009
Barnsley (1) – Manchester City (1) – Friendly – Saturday August 1, 2009
Chelsea (2) – Reading (2) – Friendly – Saturday August 1, 2009
And so the scratchy pre-season results continue.
Whilst there were some positives - Martin Petrov looking lively and added another goal to back up
his one against Barnsley. There was some nice movement throughout the side, and the sharpness and
fitness is no doubt tuning up for the start of the league campaign.
Carling Cup Third Round Draw: Manchester United Away To Leeds - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
Chelsea host Fulham in one of several all-Premier League ties in the third round of the Carling
Cup. Manchester United are away to Leeds while Liverpool, who seem to be taking the Carling Cup
very seriously this season, are away to Brighton.
Brian Clough's managerial career has been well documented, but it often completely overshadows
the success Clough had as a player. Whilst he was often accused of nepotism towards his son Nigel
whilst he was the manager of Nottingham Forest, it wasn't hard to see where the younger player got
his footballing talent from.
Naughty Nev's behaving badly again Reprimanded for his celebrations in the Manchester derby,
involved in row with police following last weekend's defeat to Liverpool, and now sent-off during
the Carling Cup tie with Barnsley: Gary Neville's behaviour doesn't get better with age. The jury's
still out for us.
I spotted this on Dirty Tackle, who in turn had spotted it on 101GG, and can't decide what to make
of it. Seems that towards the end of Man Utd's 2-0 Carling Cup away win over Barnsley last night,
two Tykes fans ran on and combined to put the ball past Ben Foster as he [...]
A case of mistaken identity Sir Alex Ferguson has previously joked about swapping the shirts of the
Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, in order to trick officials. But his plans to confuse the
identities of the Brazilian youngsters were pre-empted by referee Chris Foy, who booked the wrong
twin during the Carling Cup tie at [.
Iain Hume took to the pitch for the first time since his horrific head injury in November. The
Canadian striker made a brief cameo appearance for his former English club Tranmere Rovers at a
testimonial game. On the Barnsley website, Hume says: #8220;I was a little disappointed that it was
at Tranmere and not in front [.
David Amoo's strike gave Liverpool under-18s a winning return to league action after their FA Youth
Cup exploits.
The London-born winger scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool won 1-0 at Barnsley on
Saturday.
It was their first FA Premier Academy League fixture for four weeks as they look to finish third in
the North West section to provide a boost ahead of the two-legged Youth Cup final with Arsenal at
the end of the month in a two-legged final.
Danny Dichio comes to Toronto FC via Preston North End, thirty-two years old with creaky legs and
no pace, and becomes the club's first and most consistent scorer (when not felled by injury).
Rohan Ricketts comes to Toronto FC via Barnsley, twenty-four with fresh legs and incosistent pace,
and, save for one glorious brace against the Colorado Rapids at BMO Field in June 2008, hasn't made
much of an impact.
It had been described as such all season, but it turned out that Newcastle United's season
wasn't a soap opera after all. It was just an opera. Whilst soap operas usually offer comeuppance
and redemption, operas can only offer the inevitability of the tragic ending. After nine months of
trying to keep their heads above water, Newcastle United finally succumbed to the inevitable and
were relegated from the Premier League.
As of 6pm on Sunday, the moratorium around Newcastle United FC started. Over the coming days
expect to see the words "big club" and much discussion of whether Alan Shearer will stay on in the
dugout fill the column inches, as Newcastle become the highest profile club to be relegated from
the Premier League in many years.
Canadian international striker Iain Hume is is expected to play in a pre-season friendly for his
club Barnsley tonight against non-league outfit Buxton.
Except for a brief run out in a testimonial game in April, this would see Hume returning to the
lineup for the first time in a competitive match since November 8th, 2008.
I didn't catch any of the action from yesterdays 1-1 draw at Barnsley but from the reports it
suggests that whilst our patch pre-season results continue, we did look sharper than in the games
during the Vodacom Challenge tournament. We also saw a far stronger line-up with more of the
expected starting side featuring.
The unfortunate downside of modern technology means that any armchair fan can now comment on any
team without actually seeing the game. As I type this, I'm listening to Radio 5 and Liverpool
"fans" are calling for the head of Benitez. "The worst display I've ever seen from a Liverpool
team" shouts one fan who obviously missed the F.
Liverpool will travel to League One leaders and old rivals Leeds
United in the third round of the Carling Cup.
Championship side Preston will be hoping to stun Premier League high-flyers Tottenham, while
Portsmouth face a long trip to League One Carlisle.
There are five all-Premier League ties with holders Manchester United hosts to recently promoted
Wolves.
Barnsley manager Simon Davey has left the club by mutual consent - thereby becoming the first
managerial casualty of the English Championship season. A string of poor and abject performances by
the Tykes has seen the pressure mount on Davey - and there were angry scenes as fans protested
outside Oakwell stadium following the club's defeat to fellow Championship strugglers Reading on
Saturday.
Liverpool under-18s failed to bounce back from last week's defeat to Leicester and they suffered
another loss at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
After opening the FA Premier Academy League campaign with a victory Rodolfo Borrell's side were
beaten for a second time in succession when going down 2-0 at Nottingham Forest.
Its hectic at TGB HQ this week so its another late update.
Tonight the Champions League group stages kick off with our first game away at Standard Liege
and it looks like we may be kicking off with a weakened side. Robin van Persie is missing, as is
Almunia, Nasri, Walcott and Denilson not making the trip.
A look ahead at this weekend's games in the Premier League. Last weekend I went 7 out of 10,
bringing my season record to 42 out of 56 or 75%.
Bolton v Tottenham
Tottenham have shown already this season that why they cannot quite compete with the big four, they
are more than capable of beating the poorer teams in the Premier League.
Barnsley continued their battling bright start under new manager Mark Robins by beating Ipswich
with a late winner at Oakwell in this weekends big Championship relegation six pointer. The former
Rotherham boss has already started to turn the Reds' fortunes this season after taking the helm
following the departure of Simon Davey earlier this season.
It was an eerie moment. Genuinely creepy. The BBC television interviewer had asked Roy Keane a
pretty hapless question on the subject of whether he would stay on after his team's latest defeat
in the Championship against Barnsley, and Keane, perhaps unsurprisingly, refused to answer it. The
key to this exchange, however, was not in what he said.
So far the Premiership old boys are showing their class, occupying the top 3 places.
After paying out £2 million compensation to Keegan Newcastle failed to score for the first time
this season against Bristol City. Fans can only hope that any takeover, made more likely by the
compensation pay out, causes minimum disruption.
In all honesty, Liverpool deserved their victory. And whether you decide to blame the referee is
your choice, but at the end of the day the team who had far more chances and looked better when
they had possession deserved to win.
The harsh reality was that United failed to create much and were lacking any real cutting
edge.
