While the MLS season is about to end it only means one thing, the SuperDraft is just right
around the corner. Yes, that means a boat load of college kids will head to the combine for MLS
coaches and scouts to pick out and find the very best of the best.
The own goal by Darrius Barnes tonight not only gave the Wizards a point tonight in their SuperLiga
game against New England, but it was also a historic goal. The own goal was the Wizards 700th in
all competitions. This is the second time the Wizards have had a historic goal come from an own
goal. In 2005, the Wizards 500th goal in all competitions came against DC United.
Transfer campaign has hit the boiling point and many of the players from English lower tiers have
been in the heat over the past couple of days. Let's start chronologically, from our last briefing.
Firstly, Bristol City striker, Steve Brooker, has finally become a Doncaster member and Sean
O'Driscol's wish has finally come true.
I'm having a hard time figuring out whether New York RedBulls fans are, on the whole
relieved or saddened by COMMISSIONER DON GARBER'S UNEQUIVOCAL DENIAL of the rumor about the team
being sold.
On the one hand, a lot of fans have never been particularly comfortable with the whole
"Corporate/Energy Drink" angle, and while there are some out there who turned their back on the
team the day the Austrian caffeine vendor took over, by and large most of the locals were able to
hold their nose through the Metrostars-to-RedBull transition and continute to support the side.

Its finally Friday, though I will admit this week has flown by for me due to it being a four-day
work week and things being fairly steady on both the regular job front and this place. I had
planned to do more than what had been posted today but I blame the weird rainy weather here in
Dallas for me not getting around to some of it.

It is just three weeks into the MLS season but one of the early trends that has stood out for me
has been the impact being made by the 2009 MLS rookie class.
It's been a fabulous season for rookies in MLS. All across the league, rookies have peppered
starting lineups, as the 2009 draft yielded one of the best returns ever.
As a result, narrowing the candidates is a tough call. Two rookies in D.C., Rodney Wallace and
Chris Pontius, started almost every single game for United, and Pontius showed his class with a
couple of spectacular goals this season.

OTFATT is short for "On the field, all the time." In these updates throughout the season, I'll be
keeping track of which MLS players have played every minute of every game (regular season only).
It's weird to think that it's been so long since a Liverpool player last won the Footballer of the
Year Award from the Football Writers' Association. Me thinks it was Barnes all the way back in
1990.
Although my own preference would have been for Xabi Alonso to win due to his consistently brilliant
performances this season.
Here's Roy's take on the whole thing. No mention of Michael Owen, mind.
"I think signing players in the summer is going to be difficult for a lot of clubs. We're in a
recession and clubs are looking more and more at what's going on around them.
"We're seeing many clubs, big clubs like Southampton, in grave difficulty and I think that's
going to colour everyone's view of transfer policies and wages during the summer.
Derby County's away shirt for the 2009-10 football season has been officially released by the club.
It has been made by Adidas, and is somewhat similar to the design used by the kit maker in Spain's
Confederations Cup shirt. Bombardier are the kit sponsors. The shirt will be worn with white shorts
and black socks with [.

I received an enthusiastic e-mail last week from EPL Talk reader Jake Islas who asked me for
advice about how he could create a blog and a vibrant community similar to mine here at EPL Talk. I
was tempted to warn him not to venture into the field. The pay is lousy. It requires an incredible
amount of hard work.

Being the top rookie in any MLS rookie class is an accomplishment, but being the best rookie in
arguably the strongest rookie class in league history makes the 2009 MLS Rookie of the Year award
more special than most.
Hatters Youth Boss Craig Madden has named his squad for tonight's FA Youth Cup first-round tie
at the Don Valley Stadium .
The Squad is as follows : Parisi; Disney, S Barnes, Halls, L Barnes, Murty, Hare, Williams,
Wilson, Darkwah, Fisher, Roberts, Ormson, Whitehead, Rowe, Lee.
The second participant in the MLS Eastern Conference Final will be determined tonight when the
New England Revolution faces the Chicago Fire in Game Two of their First Round playoff series.
New England will try to join Real Salt Lake in the East Final by building on its 2-1 victory in
Game One.

It is just three weeks into the MLS season but one of the early trends that has stood out for me
has been the impact being made by the 2009 MLS rookie class.
A big game tonight and another big win for Graham Westley's side. If only we had hit the ground
running back in August!
Stevenage have been superb since December. If the season had begun at the beginning of that
month, then Boro would be comfortable winners of the Blue Square Premier.
According to Tom Adams at Setanta Sports, Fulham do not plan on signing
Giles Barnes permanently from Derby County or Olivier
Dacourt from Inter Milan. Both joined the club on loan in January. Boss
Roy Hodgson said,
"Giles has unfortunately been injured and we haven't had the chance to assess him as we
would like .
Belated greetings from Carson on a day the Sol is celebrating the game that spawned WPS and the
U.S. men are catching their breath after seeing everything go exactly right in South Africa (that
"we'll take it" look on Coach Bob Bradley's face at game's end said it all).
Runaway WPS leaders the Sol have never even conceded a goal to FC Gold Pride winning two
previous encounters 1-0 and 2-0.
A mix of starters and reserves took the field against New England last night and pulled out a 1-1
draw with the Revolution, leaving the Wizards on 2 points heading into their final group game of
this year's SuperLiga. The Wizards can't seem to get away from the red cards either. For the 6th
straight game, a red card was issued in a Wizards game.
The Rams' 09/10 Coca Cola Championship home kit has arrived. Derby County have officially revealed
their home shirt for the 2009-10 season. The new strip is made by Adidas and sponsored by
Bombardier. Looks quite a bit like last season's design, but definitely looks more stylish. Check
out the photo of the new Derby kit.
League two club Notts County have sacked manager Ian McParland. The 48 year old, a former Magpies
player himself, arrived at Meadow Lane in October 2007. Notts County finished 21st in the 2007-08
season, and 19th in the 2008-09 season. However McParland's position was always under a cloud after
the takeover of the club by [.
Omar Gonzalez was named Rookie of the Year today. (Getty Images)
Another season award came down today, this time it is the league's Rookie of the Year. For the
second straight year a LA Galaxy defender has won it as the honor went to Omar Gonzalez today.
Gonzalez helped a defense go from one of the worst in league history to one of the better ones
this season.
New England Revolution defender Jay Heaps has decided to retire from professional soccer and will
make the official announcement later this week, according to a report in the Boston Globe. His
leadership and experience will be sorely missed by New England, who fielded two rookies (Kevin
Alston, Darrius Barnes) alongside Heaps in defense for the majority of the 2009 season.
According to Colin Tattum at the Birmingham Mail, 21-year-old midfielder Giles
Barnes has been given a chance to train with Birmingham after being
released by Derby County.
Barnes played for Fulham last season on loan but failed to make an appearance
with the club.

running back in August!
Stevenage have been superb since December. If the season had begun at the beginning of that
month, then Boro would be comfortable winners of the Blue Square Premier.
With so many goals scored off of set pieces, a key component in a team's success is normally how
well they defend free kicks.
This has been a staple of the New England Revolution's success in the past, but as MLSnet.com's
Kyle McCarthy reports, the number of goals conceded thus far in the 2009 season has been as much a
part of their downfall as their injuries.
Growing up in the early 1980's watching such names as Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Rush and
Dalglish fly across the screen, I found it quite difficult to comprehend another player coming
through the club having the same type of impact as some of those names.
Then came a lad by the name of Fowler who sent Anfield into raptures on an almost continual
basis.

New England misses a chance to advance at the expense of Kansas City, while Santos and Atlas can't
find a goal. Kansas City 1 - New England 1 Tough night for the New England Revolution. With Michael
Videria exiting in the 34th for a straight red card, the Revs scored short-handed through Kheli
Dube in first-half stoppage time.
Stats from last night's SuperLiga game between KC and New England.
The own goal by Darrius Barnes was the 700th goal in all competitions for the Wizards.
The 6th straight game that the Wizards have played a game where a red card has been issued.
For the third straight game against the Revolution, the Wizards have gotten an own goal.
GAME - Chicago takes the win 2-1 ending the Rev's Superliga run. The Revs didn't deserve a loss,
but couldn't make their opportunities count. Chicago, on the other hand, had few chances and their
stars were mostly silent, but made a difference when they did strike. I didn't see much from Blanco
all game, but his well placed free kick proved too much for the Rev's to overcome.
Happy August Everybody!
Kyle McCarthy posts expected starting XI on Twitter
kylejmccarthy TFC (4-2-3-1, R to L): Frei; Brennan, Serioux, Garcia, Wynne; Cronin, Robinson;
Barrett, Vitti, De Rosario; Gerba
kylejmccarthy N.E. (4-4-2, R to L): Reis; Alston, Osei, Barnes, Heaps; Nyassi, Larentowicz,
Ralston, Mansally; Jankauskas, Dube
Honestly, I was so damn tired, I didn't even try to spin it like this game in New England was the
game where we secure a spot in the playoffs.
"They have been able to stay very consistent in that back four of [Steve] Ralston and
[Jay] Heaps on the outside and [Darrius] Barnes and [Emmanuel] Osei in the middle.
"And just when I was starting to blame my hair!"
It took 25 games over more than two years, but Gareth Bale was finally a part of his first
Premier League win with Spurs as the club beat Burnley 5-0 on Saturday.
The match was already well in hand when Bale was brought on in the 86th minute with the goal of
ending his dubious and undeserved Premier League record streak.
