After a disappointing season with yet more fan unrest and another failed promotion attempt, Serie
B side Torino have made an interesting appointment for next term, we invited Rob Gillman (the
excellent Torino Blogger) to tell us more. In just six years as Torino President Urbano Cairo has
overseen the appointment of a remarkable fourteen coaches, with former Bari boss Giampiero Ventura
the latest.
In earlier posts, I have discussed the idea of positive and negative leverage - the idea that being
up or down a goal (or two or three) changes the dynamics and the psychology of a match.
Statistically, I defined it as the odds of a team winning the match, given the particular score at
the time and the time remaining in the match.
Two teams made giant strides this weekend, in opposite directions. One continues a march towards
the top, now far ahead and likely to win its first scudetto in eight years. The other continues its
awful slide and looks likely to be relegated. Fittingly, the former trounced the latter 3-0 in a
game that summed up the season that each of the clubs is having.

It's only a friendly but Wednesday's match between Italy and Spain is a huge match for both
clubs as he head towards the 2012 Euro's next summer.
Italy suffered a nightmare defence of their crown at the last World Cup, finishing below New
Zealand at the bottom of Group F.
They have shown signs of improvement under Cesare Prandelli, and lead their Euro 2012 qualifying
group by five points.
In a matter of hours the reigning World and European champions, Spain, will take on four time World
Cup winners Italy in Bari's San Nicola stadium. For a match that pits the two latest winners of the
world cup, the difference between them could not be greater. After years of underachievement the
Spanish national team have been exhibiting a brand of football that is game changing.

The year has come to a close, and as is the fashion we're looking over our favorite stories to
compile a starting eleven, Cult Football style. The players on our squad aren't always the most
talented, but they tend to bring a joy, or promise, or general absurdity to the game. We hope
you've enjoyed the time you've spent with us over the last six months, and here's a wish of good
fortune to all in the new year!
The current transfer window in Poland is far more interesting that I expected. First of all, the
'eternal' talent of Polish football, Paweł Brożek, finally left Poland (together with his brother
Piotr) to play for the Turkish league leaders Trabzonspor. Even earlier Sławomir Peszko decided to
capitalize on his impressive Europa League performances and moved to his dreamt of Bundesliga.

Mad Tony Cassano gives team-mate Rodney Strasser a friendly squeeze in the sphincter zone, just
seconds after Cassano had set up Strasser for Milan's winner at Cagliari.

Last week, the new FIFA version of the Balon d'Or was handed out, and an interesting thing took
place: all three players on the podium (Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta) were all Barcelona
players. But even more than that, all three had been produced by Barcelona's famous Cantera youth
system.
Cagliari vs Juventus Sant'Elia- February 5, 2011 Final score:- Cagliari vs Juventus 1-3 ( Roberto
Acquafresca/ Alessandro Matri*2, Luca Toni) Juventus ease the pressure off under fire coach Luigi
DelNeri with a 3-1 win over Cagliari away from home. Alessandro Matri, on loan at Juventus from
Cagliari, scored two of the three goals.
It was yet another big weekend in Serie A. The top three won, which kept things the same at the
top of the table, while the race for places 4-7 continues to be ever-changing, as sides like
Juventus, Palermo, Roma, and the likes aren't consistent. Below that, it continues to remain
competitive, as only 4 points separate 9th place from 14th.
As the final whistle blew Sunday afternoon at the San Siro, Milan players and fans knew that an
opportunity had been lost. Inter had surprisingly drawn against relegation-troubled Brescia (goal
scored by known Milanista Andrea Caracciolo), and Milan stepped onto the pitch vs. Bari knowing
they could extend their lead to +7 at the top of the table.
Situations involving penalty kicks are often similar to situations involving one night stands.
One of the parties is usually thrilled whilst the other is full of self loathing and regret,
shocked that something like that could happen to them. The analogy could go on but would
risk entering into PG-13 territory.

UNREAL: With 1 round left in Ligue 1 there are still nine teams trying to avoid the one final
relegation spot!
Only 2 relegation places are left in the top 5 leagues of Europe - France and Germany.
Obviously, right?
No one's pretending like Italy's been even remotely clean or not covered with a slightly less
thick layer of filth since the dark days of Calciopoli rattled the soul of Serie A and simply
torpedoed the league's standing in the European community. The Bundesliga even gets their fourth
Champions League spot in 2012-13, so they're still paying out of pocket.
As the summer transfer window opens and teams across Europe begin their annual spending
spree/discount sale, I wanted to share the perspective of American fans of Bari, Brescia, and
Sampdoria, or the "Relegated Three" for the 2011-2012 season. Relegation is a part of soccer life,
and much has been written on the pain of seeing your favorite team descending into lower league
hell after the glories of top flight redemption.

guest writer/Frank Tigani This week the Azzurri recorded a highly impressive victory over reigning
World and European Champions Spain. Sure, it may have just been a friendly, however, considering
the strength of the two line ups it was clear that neither Cesare Prandelli nor Vicente del Bosque
took to the contest lightly.
Last week Italy triumphed in impressive fashion over reigning European and World Champions Spain.
The match was played in Bari and amongst the stars for the Azzurri, two players stood out. Riccardo
Montolivo enjoyed his best evening in blue as he displayed his creative instincts throughout the
contest in addition to scoring a delightful goal.
AC Milan faced juventus and Inter Milan tonight in Bari and unfortunately the red and blacks did

eagerly anticipated derby for many years. To say that Lecce v Bari will be a relegation six

that they will find impossible to recover from.
