Fulham manager Roy Hodgson maintains there has been no contact from Arsenal over
promising defender Chris Smalling and would expect a phone call from Arsene Wenger if there was any
interest.
Setanta Sports confirmed today that its US and Caribbean sports channel will cease broadcasting
on February 28, 2010 and that much of its TV programming rights, including premium soccer games and
rugby events, will be transferred to Fox Soccer Channel, according to a press release on the
Setanta US website.
Man Utd recently published a summary of their 2009 financial statements. I thought it will be
interesting to look at how the clubs compare financially. Since their summary is only a two page
document it's not possible to do a detailed analysis but we can definitely compare the incomes of
the two clubs.
The Christmas weekend matches were possibly the round of matches that passed us by without much
talking points. Apart from the sacking of Gary Megson, every match and result went according to
script. What are The Flat Back Four's conclusions from watching the matches over the Christmas
period? Here goes.
Right from the moment the starting line up was announced it was clear this one was going to be
an uphill battle. Things got worse right in the first minute as Stoke capitalized on their first
salvo. Delap fired the only real weapon in the hosts' arsenal and Fuller made sure it found the
target.
With the heavy snowy conditions, most Premiership matches have been canceled. However the match
that matters most, West Ham v. Wolves, looked, at the time of writing, to be going ahead. With so
many fixtures canceled, this is the most opportune time for West Ham to steal a march on their
relegation threatened rivals.
It's not often that Arsene Wenger comes out and says we were closer to losing than winning. It's
even rarer when he says that we had technical problems. To be fair, Le Boss got is spot on and
deserves some credit for saying a lot in few words. It's a different matter that these problems
should have been foreseen and it's more down to him than anyone else that we played the way we
did.
I was looking at some statistics and the passing stats interested me. I think Arsenal games can
be classified based on these numbers. It's more of a post game classification rather than a
pre-game one, although it wont be difficult to predict in many cases.
First up are the games we dominate

Amongst our recent games, the wins over Portsmouth, Hull and Stoke are in this category.
I guess most of us were worried about losing Song to the Africa Cup of Nations. Now that he is
back and I am assuming he will play against United, it is worthwhile taking a look at just how
badly did we miss the Cameroon hard-man.
Song left for Angola after helping us win the Cup tie at West Ham.
Roberto Mancini's appointment has had the desired effect on the stuttering Manchester City team. In
the two matches that the Italian has been in charge, the team has tightened up with two clean
sheets and Carlos Tevez looks to be in the form of his life. City's performance has been so
encouraging that Mancini has been bold enough to change his cautious top four statement to
legitimate Premier

President of Fox Soccer Channel.
Racing Santander president Francisco Pernia insists reports teenage star Sergio Canales is on his
way out "have as much relation to the truth as an egg to a chestnut".
Canales only turns 19 next month but is already being linked with a number of clubs including
Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona and Barclays Premier League outfits Manchester City,
Liverpool and Arsenal.
Premier League Team News - Barclays Premier League - ESPN Soccernet The news from Arsenal (or at
least it is news to me) is that Denilson is out this week with an abdominal injury. This
definitely leaves me wondering about who will nominally play in the holding spot this weekend for
Arsenal. Denilson wasn't a great choice as a replacement for Song but he IS a better choice than
anyone else on
I am feeling fine again. Before the match I was a little nervous as I didn't have the right
feeling, during the match till we got the second goal the same anxiety dominated. Once the second
goal went in I had a sense of relief and now that I have thought about the game a bit, there is
even more belief that we are up for it this season.
An underachieving Liverpool team will face super-confident Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield this
Wednesday. A match that should see Maxi Rodriquez and Alberto Aquilani in the starting lineup. But
then again, who can read Rafa's mind? After a great last season, Liverpool were looking to go one
better than second and finally be Premiership champions.
While Didier Drogba is playing for his country in African Nations Cup, Nicolas Anelka will be
getting a lot more trust as Chelsea's lead forward. His 2 goals and 1 assist against Sunderland
show frenchmans ability to decide games in Barclays Premier League. Anelka is still far from his
last seasons 19 scored goals but if he keeps up with he's awesome form, he will be a serious threat
for any opponent Chelsea will face this season.
Liverpool have not been in the best of form lately and two days back, Tottenham Hotspur were
relishing their visit to Anfield in search of what was to be their first win in a very very long
time. Well, as it turned out, Spurs would have to wait a lot longer if the incredible fanatical
support of Wednesday night continue to drive Liverpool Football Club on throughout the rest of the
season.
Arsenal return from Villa Park with a point. As we'd discussed a couple of days ago, it's not a
bad result by any means, except perhaps from the point of view of those people who actively seek
out reasons to be negative.
Curiously enough, this is our third away draw of the season and all have come away to teams
playing in Claret and Blue colors.
The final weekend of the NFL regular season is here and there are still a bunch of things to figure
out, like who is going to win the NFC East, the wildcard spots in the AFC, and seeding. During the
final Sunday of the season, games will kickoff at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Some teams might know
that their games means nothing as they take the field because of earlier results.
Someone is sniffing an upset:
The fourth-round FA Cup tie against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park will be played
on Sunday, January 24, kick off 4pm, and televised live by ITV.
The Barclays Premier League match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, scheduled for
Tuesday, January 26, will now be played 24 hours later on Wednesday, January 27.
The player interviews after games on ATVO are generally quite uninteresting. Most of the times
you can predict what the players will say as the questions are quite leading. Every once in a while
though, an interview gives me something insightful or thought provoking.
Sagna's post match talk after the West Ham game falls in this category.
At the end of a productive week you shuffle off to your living room for some deserved rest. You
plonk yourself down on the comfy couch, arrange a smorgasbord of snacks on the table and tune in to
the game of the week.
Everything is aligned for an ideal Sunday afternoon fiesta when suddenly it seizes you like
fingernails scratching a blackboard: your game's commentator is a serial abuser of proper
diction.
STOKE CITY remain confident at this stage that this evening's Barclays Premier League match against
Fulham will go ahead at the Britannia Stadium. The Club have conducted a review of the situation
with match referee Mark Clattenburg and the Police at lunchtime which confirmed that the pitch
itself and the footprint of the Britannia Stadium are in good condition for the game tonight (7.
I have this nervy sort of feeling for this game, part excitement part anxiety. So far we have
been able to point at the game in hand to explain the points difference with the leaders. Now it's
time to make the game count. The excitement is obviously from our recent form. There seems to be no
apparent cause for us to break stride.
As predicted by many, the fixture against Bolton was called off and still remains a game in
hand. I had read about the likelihood of the game being called off on many sites/blogs but was
hoping it will go ahead. It seems, Wenger had similar wishes and the Arsenal staff tried everything
in their power to make it work.
I am the kind of person who just has to check the news every few minutes. I know that even if I
don't follow the rumors all day long the same transfers are going to take place. Logically there
should be better uses of time than to check the Arsenal website and newsnow ever so often. But
practically it's impossible to avoid.
Two top-flight games off, Reds request postponement - Barclays Premier League - ESPN SoccernetWell,
that certainly screws with the line-up I had locked in when I went to sleep last night. To
summarize the link above...Fulham v. Pompey is officially called off (that's no Duffman or Dempsey
for me and probably Baird and AJ for others as well).
Premier League Team News - Barclays Premier League - ESPN SoccernetSorry, work intervenes...The big
story is still the need to monitor the cancellations more so than the injuries...Otherwise, it
looks like Landon Donovan might make his debut for EvertonVidic is out for ManYoo meaning
Evans/Brown will start (Evans is a pretty solid deal at 6.
Former Liverpool striker Paul Walsh is confident an injury-free run until the end of the season
will see the Reds claim a top four finish.
With the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Manchester City all harboring genuine
aspirations of securing Champions League football next term, many believe 2009-10 to be the
toughest Barclays Premier League campaign in recent times.
Five Premier League games called off - Barclays Premier League - ESPN SoccernetAfter Hull City
"assured" everyone that the ground would be good as early as this morning, they have officially
joined the growing list of matches that have been postponed. Here is the current list of matches
that HAVE NOT been canceled (Yahoo!
We all want a game, that much is established. Arsene wants to go ahead, the fans want one and I
am sure the players want to play as well. The minor advantage of some players returning to fitness
are far outweighed by building on the momentum and putting points on the board while avoiding a
pile up at the later stages.
Wenger's pre-match press conference before the Everton game was quite humorous and interesting.
Le Boss spoke on many topics and seemed to be in a jovial mood. Amidst the usual pre-match talk of
injuries, signings, and the ceaseless Spanish Inquisition, a journalist asked Wenger how he is
going to judge the season at the end.
What do you call a piece of news that's half expected and half unbelievable! When I saw the news
of Sol Campbell returning to Arsenal earlier in the day, I was quite skeptical and ignored it as
more media gibberish. Suddenly, a headline from the Arsenal website with Campbell's name popped up
as I realized this was for real.

New Liverpool FC signing Maxi Rodriguez has pledged to "put himself on the line" to help lift his
new team-mates out of their current slump.
The Argentina international joined from Atletico Madrid in midweek on a three-and-a-half-year
contract.
He is a welcome addition to the club's attacking ranks at a time when they have just lost trio
Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun to injury for a number of weeks.
West Ham are down to bare bones for this match against Aston Villa at Villa Park. No senior
strikers and possibly no Scott Parker and definitely no Mark Noble. Gianfranco Zola's motivational
skills will be tested to the fullest this Sunday. At least Jack Collison will be back and his
dynamic runs will be all the more important in this one.
Over the last few days there has been unending debate over the state of Machester United's
finances. Liverpool's financial problems and their on field issues have also become a public
spectacle and been a source of immense pain and concern amongst the supporters of the club.
Most of the abuse has been directed towards the American owners of these clubs for the debt
burden that they have created.
