After months of enquiries flooding in from most of Europe's major clubs, Benfica have finally
named their asking price for highly-rated defender David Luiz.
The Portuguese side have told all the interested parties that they will need to stump up £25
million to prise the 6′1″ centre-back from the Estadio da Luz.
Inter Milan are in talks with Swiss sensation Xherdan Shaqiri, according to reports.
Italian sources are quoted in a report from German website 4-4-2 suggesting that Inter are prepared
to pay 7 million euros for the 18-year-old Liverpool target.
Shaqiri's stock rose considerably after he scored a stunning goal for Switzerland in their 3-1 Euro
2012 qualification defeat against England in September.
I've seen many great games in the EPL this year. I was impressed with a lot of Bayern's games
last CL season. And then there was that World Cup, too.
But the match of the year was undoubtedly Barcelona - Real Madrid, season 2010/11.

Liverpool have given Fernando Torres assurances they will be active in the transfer market this
summer to try to convince him his future lies at Anfield.
Prior to the Manchester United clash on Sunday, both manager Rafa Benitez and managing director
Christian Purslow have talked with their star striker.
The Man Who Still Holds the Key to Arsenal's Future
At first glance, this question looks bleedingly obvious. With their massive fan base, a
beautiful new 60,000 plus seat stadium, and their years of success and trophies, Arsenal should be
quite clearly considered to be a "big club.
He's considered the best active footballer to ever play the game. He leads all players in total
career goals for the World Cup, and he's won more Golden Boots then just about any person on the
planet Earth.
And when it comes to eating competitions Brazil's Ronaldo is first class as well.
This summer new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho expressed his desire to add one more superstar
striker to his artillery and following one match we can see why. Real Madrid was unable to score
today in their debut league match of the season against Mallorca and the club has already fallen
two points behind rivals Barcelona.

I am getting plenty of emails from SFS readers asking me for the date of the FC Barcelona – Real
Madrid "Clasico": the first of the two big games in the Spanish Football – League season. In
theory, it's the weekend of the 27th of November & this 2010 – 2011 season the first game is at
"Camp Nou", the home ground of FC Barcelona.
Brazilian ace Ronaldinho could make a surprise return to the Selecao squad for their
upcoming friendly against Argentina. When questioned whether he would include Dinho in his squad
for the friendly, Menezes left reporters guessing. However, he did not rule out calling up the 30
year old Milan forward.
It's funny how quickly transfer speculation spreads. Two weeks ago, Gareth Bale was just an
in-form left-winger playing for Tottenham. It was a simple as that. Now, he's the hottest property
in Europe and has to ‘clarify' his future in regards to interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid and
friends.
This is how American TV Sports Channel ESPN promotes the big Spanish League - Liga Round 13 clash
next Monday between FC BARCELONA - REAL MADRID, locally termed "El Clasico": Not bad at all except
( my opinion) the too obvious stereotype use of the Spanish dance "Flamenco". However I won´t be
too harsh on them as we here would have used a giant Hot Dog or a Hamburger to promote the
Superbowl.
Effing Hell Classico One thing is for certain, Barcelona are the form team in world football. The
pomp and verve displayed on Monday night will not have sent shockwaves through Surope, but only
because their dominance and class is utterly accepted. But less about the winners; what of the
losers? What went wrong?

You can't keep a good footballing nation down and while the state of
Yugoslavia has been
consigned to the world of dusty old Len Deighton novels, the nations that formed that Eastern Bloc
political contrivance continue to produce good (if not great) footballing teams.
In the years that followed the brutal war in the Balkans which resulted in the break up of
Yugoslavia, it was
Croatia who kept the footballing flame alive internationally.

Villarreal.

The final of the Africa Cup of Nations, the new season in Argentina, an FA Cup replay and the
big game in the Premier league all feature in this week's predictions. This week's guest predictor

The UEFA Champions League is about to begin its knockout stage and it's time to take a closer
look at which teams are legitimate contenders to lift the trophy in May. Defending champions FC
Barcelona continue to be the favorites but several other teams are not far behind. The rankings
below are as of Sunday, February 14, 2010 and only include the top eight teams (out of the
remaining 16).
Today was the day of Mexico's Superclásico between Guadalajara and América, the biggest rivalry
in Mexican football. It's not a true 'derby' in that both clubs are in separate cities -- which
makes it closer to Barcelona-Real Madrid or PSG-Marseille -- but it is definitely the most fiercely
contested of all Mexican league rivalries.

Reports are doing the rounds today that Chelsea are heading the pack in the race to sign
Atletico Bilbao star Javi Martinez.
The 21-year-old combative midfielder is widely expected to leave Los Leones this summer
after four impressive years at the club during which he has attracted interest from all across
Europe most notably from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Over the past few years the English Premiership has grown stronger and become the pride of
Europe. It's no doubt that the EPL is one of the strongest leagues in the world, reaching it's peak
when Manchester United and Chelsea met in the first all English Champions League Final. One can
make the case that the EPL is still the strongest league in all of Europe considering the teams
efforts in Champions League and more recently Liverpool and Fulham's success in the Europa
League.
So Tottenham are in the Champions League.
Well, not quite. They are not yet qualified to the group stage, which is what most people tend
to mean by the Champions League, but for arguments sake let's assume they are. What does it
actually mean?
An increase in revenue, indeed.
The 25 year old who is set to leave CSKA moscow after the World Cup is being eyed by Sir Alex as
Manchester United look to make it 19 titles come next May!

LA LIGA
STATISTICS from the 2009/2010 season at you. Some won't come as much as a surprise,
although a couple might raise a few eyebrows. Before heading down the page, try to guess who the
leagues most lethal marksman is?
As one of the most skilful players of his generation, Romania's Gheorghe Hagi earned the nickname
'Maradona of the Carpathians' with worthy comparisons to the great Argentinean to be found both in
playing style and temperament. Undoubtedly the finest player to have emerged from his country,
Hagi's remarkable 16-year international career consisted of appearances at three World Cups, while
his domestic exploits took in the sights of top European clubs Barcelona, Real Madrid and
Galatasaray.
Manchester United have found themselves linked with a pair of highly-sought-after Serie A based
targets this morning, namely Palermo's Danish defender Simon Kjaer (there's that
name again!) and Juventus' Brazilian string-puller Diego.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will seemingly have to gird their loins this summer if they wish to keep
hold of their Argentine scrapper Javier Mascherano, who has been linked with a
move to rejoin his former manager at Inter yet again this morning.
We get "rumours" or "reports" every Transfer Window; Arsenal are linked to this player or that.
The heart soars only to be disappointed in the cold light of day by the unreality of the stupid
rumour.
Where do these reports come from? Well they breakdown into distinct types.
Denis Hill Wooden-top announces Arsenal have money to spend, if Arsene wants to buy someone.
Brazil's Ramires is now set to play next season in Stamford Bridge after his deal is finalized
in the next few days.
The 23 year-old midfielder was a key part of the Brazilian national team during their World Cup
2010 tournament, despite making an earlier exit than planned thanks to the Netherlands.
Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of completing the £20 million signing of midfielder
Ramires from Portuguese club SL Benfica. Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti had to overcome competition
from Manchester City to fill in the void left in the defensive midfield position by the departure
of German international Michael Ballack.
I haven't been one to report that much on transfer rumors this summer. I don't quite know
why.
Our third signing of the summer?
Perhaps it's the sheer volume of links. Or the sheer lack of concrete news regarding said links.
Either way, I haven't been paying too much attention key words: too much to the rumor mill.
UPDATE: According to ESPN Soccernet, it has been confirmed that
Benfica have reached a deal with Chelsea to sell
Ramires for £18.2million. Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios (CMVM) made
a statement to the Portuguese regulatory authorities saying,
"Benfica hereby announces that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Chelsea for the
definitive transfer of the sporting and economic rights of the professional footballer Ramires for
the amount of €22,000,000.
Last year we witnessed CSKA Moskow making it all the way to the quarterfinals unexpectedly, this
season the Cinderella team might just go by the name Braga. The Portugal side pulled off a
surprising upset of last season's fourth place La Liga side and Luis Fabiano and company have
already been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League tournament despite making it all the way to
the final sixteen spots last season.
Viva Espana... if it's a procession that you want Flicking onto Sky Sports 2 on a Saturday night,
you would be forgiven for thinking that there are only three teams in the Spanish league:
Barcelona, Real Madrid, and whoever else happens to be playing them. The bias and focus is
appalling, but understandable.
Roma defender John Arne Riise recently revealed his next dream destination and it wasn't to an
expected destination like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Manchester
United, or even big spending Manchester City.
The former Liverpool man desires a move to America and the MLS when his time is up in Serie
A.
