Pass masters Barcelona set a new world record for most passes in a football match as they
demolished Real Sociedad 5-0 yesterday. The free-scoring La Liga champions strung together an
impressive 938 passes during the rout. Not only is that the most passes in a match since Opta
records began in 2006, it also smashes [.
Xavi's pure brilliance in the midfield has been rewarded as the Spanish playmaker has been
honored with the World Soccer Player of the Year for 2010. Xavi received 25.8% of the votes and
edged out Lionel Messi for the award. Messi wasn't far behind however as he received 24.1%
percent.
As for Barcelona, they were rated the third best team in the world.
It's that time of year when thoughts should ineffably turn to those less fortunate than
ourselves, 'tis the season of 'goodwill to all men' and all that jazz.
However, me being a stingy son of a gun, I felt the clamour to turn my thoughts to those far
more fortunate than ourselves, and produce a list of some of the luckiest, gummy-grinned chancers
the modern game has offered up to date.
News today that three Premier League clubs have been contacted to see if they are interested in
taking Barcelona's 19 year old defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu on loan. The clubs contacted are
said to be Newcastle United (of course), Everton and Blackburn Rovers, and the news is being
broadcast by Spanish station Com Radio.
The Argentina football federation have announced that they will play Portugal in a friendly at
in London early next year. The match is scheduled to take place on February 9. The last time the
two countries played each other was back in 1972 when Portugal beat Argentina 3-1 in Rio de
Janeiro.
Remember the young girl who was distraught when she didn't get to meet Xavi at the Spain World Cup
victory parade? A clever Catalan TV station has come up with the brilliant idea of bringing here
along to the studio and making her dream come true. Emotional? Xavi certainly seems to think so.

Reports emanating from Israel (namely the Ma'ariv newspaper) are claiming that Barcelona's
historic shirt sponsorship deal with the Qatar Foundation is in jeopardy as the Arab organisation
have been accused of forging direct links with Islamic (and, for the record, Palestinian)
terrorist group Hamas.
Friday, December 24, 2010 - Haydon's Soccer Pitch by John Haydon
John Haydon of Haydons Soccer Pitch has reported the following story:
A huge soccer game is coming to the D.C. region.
Spanish giant Barcelona is scheduled to play legendary English club Manchester United at 91,000
capacity FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
Real Madrid is already a dominate team in La Liga but despite having already crushed through a
number of teams, except Barcelona of course, they have done this without the services of Kaka.
Although Jose Mourinho has stated that he is looking forward to seeing Kaka take the pitch with
the team he has been building, Jorge Valdano looks like he has other plans for the 28-year old.

It's just WRONG.

Well, we have only ourselves to blame. We made a proper mess of the easiest group and somehow
contrived to finish second, and will get a purple-and-blue gift wrapped Jack-in-the-box on
Valentine's Day as a result. Arsenal have had more than decent luck in Champions League draws
over the past few years, but good luck today would have meant getting Schalke, who topped their
group and have Raul and Huntelaar playing up front.
Arsenal's frozen assets are in the form of key players returning to fitness and form if
everything goes our way, we may see the loss of yesterday's game as a bonus in that it gives us a
little more time to get closer to full strength. The return of Cesc, Vermaelen, Ramsey and Diaby
would make us a force to be reckoned with capable of fighting on many fronts and yes, beating
Barcelona why not?
Sorry we're late to this.
This past weekend Heart Attack Ray Hudson issued an opine (2nd video) on Lionel Messi during
Barcelona's 5-1 thrashing of Espanyol....and recommended a little YouTube ditty on the star from
Catalan country (1st video) showcasing Messi's refusal to go down.
We would be remiss not to give Messi and Ray Hudson their just due, especially after we
witnessed Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli yesterday seemingly get blown over by the wind on
multiple occasions.
I've suggested this before (with a nice diagram), but if we have no fit centre-forward worthy of
the name we need to make the most of what we do have, namely attacking midfielder types.
Jonathan Wilson's review of the tactical year.
Barcelona also show the effectiveness of two of the other tactical trends in club football: the
false nine and the inverted winger.

There's been a small furor since Monday, when Andy Gray opened his mouth and...well, that's it
that's all he really needs to do. I'm convinced he's one of football commentary's three most
blinding idiots, and the sentiment that Barcelona couldn't hack it in the Premiership does nothing
to alter that stance for the good.
Netherlands international winger Ibrahim Afellay was officially presented as an FC Barcelona player
on Friday following his 3 million euro move from Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven. The four and
a half year deal will see PSV receive a percentage of any fee that Afellay is sold for and Barça
play them in their centenary [.
In a surprising return (Ok not really), the ‘Special One' Jose Mourinho is back into his old
ways boosting his own self-ego. As Moruinho feels that he should be the front-runner for al the
major [Individual] accolades for 2010, the Portuguese coach went on to remind the people all he has
done for Inter Milan in the 2009-2010 season.
Effing Hell Classico One thing is for certain, Barcelona are the form team in world football. The
pomp and verve displayed on Monday night will not have sent shockwaves through Surope, but only
because their dominance and class is utterly accepted. But less about the winners; what of the
losers? What went wrong?

Any Barcelona fans thinking about ordering a DVD of Monday's El Clásico? Well, don't bother.
This compilation has everything you need from Sergio Ramos kiss-blowing to dramatic views from the
stands of the Camp Nou to the intricate touches of Lionel Messi to the despair on Iker Casillas'
face.

Former Brazil, Barcelona and Milan star Rivaldo will make a return to Brazilian football in the
2011 Paulista for tiny club Mogi Mirim, of whom the player is also president.
The 38 year-old has not played competitive football since leaving Uzbekistani outfit Bunyodkor
in August, and it has been seven years since he has played for a Brazilian club.
