You would think that Michael Ballack has it all. He has fame and fortune, is captain of his country
and was selected in FIFA's 100 Greatest Living Players. But a closer look at his CV bears a very
strong resemblance to that of the Buffalo Bills. Maybe Ballack's nickname should be the nearly man.
2008 was [.
We've all seen the David Beckham adidas ads. You've probably seen the adidas ads featuring stars
such as Messi, Mourinho, Kaka, Ballack, and more. Now, the MLS has it's own adidas ad. It's not the
best thing in the world, but at least the soccer scene will get some much needed exposure. [...]
But Park is starting. Swings and roundabouts.
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Carvalho, Terry, Ashley Cole, Obi, Joe Cole, Deco Ballack, Lampard,
Malouda, Anelka. Subs: Cudicini, Drogba, Ballack, Bridge, Kalou, Alex, Belletti.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Scholes, Park,
Berbatov, Rooney.
Avram Grant, John Terry and Michael Ballack are all confident that Wigan are going to try their
level best against Manchester United on Sunday. Or at least they have stated this in public. Why
shouldn't Manchester United be asking the same of Bolton Wanderers, who now travel to Chelsea
knowing that they will be playing [.
Some of world football's biggest super stars are signed up to play in a charity match in Germany
next week to help raise money for Africa. Among the players signed up to raise money for this great
cause are: Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, Gennaro Gattuso, Michael Ballack, and Steven Gerrard. Fans
will make a donation for each goal scored by their favorite player; too bad young David Villa's not
on the list.
BILD: You have won eight titles and came second ten times in the last ten years - how much of a
bitter pill to swallow is this? Ballack: „Why bitter pill? I think that I have been playing
successful football in the last couple of years. Some people win just one
Herr Ballack (or should that be Herr Lip) donned this moustache for a Mercedes ad, in which he was
cast in the role of intrepid adventurer. Not the first time that Germany's captain has taken the
corporate dollar. Watch...
A penalty shoot-out is the sort of thing that separates the men from the boys. As a player, do you
put your name forward as someone who can beat the keeper from twelve yards, or do you instead hide
behind Frank Lampard and hope nobody notices you? It appears that there were a few shirkers [...]
Chelsea will be in the UEFA Champions League Finals 2008

Este poster creado por un aficionado al Chelsea muestra a Drogba y a Ballack, y eso solo me hace
recordar los fracasos que han tenido estos dos jugadores con sus selecciones.
Presuming the rumor below is true, there are two things we can guess about Chelsea next term...1)
They're going to be a lot more fun to watch; and2) There is a good chance that they're going to
fall prey to the same thing that brought down "Don't Call Me Big" Phil's last team
Portugal, namely that they won't be big enough to win out against larger, more aggressive teams
(like the kind that are generally found in the top half of the Premier League table).
Crikey, as we say in England. The reasons why Robinho was willing to relocate to Manchester
suddenly become clear:
The 24-year-old has agreed a four-year contract that makes him the highest-paid
footballer in the history of the game, with a weekly salary of £160,000.
For those of you not used to the quaint habit that British newspapers have of expressing
multi-million pound salaries in a working-class "weekly wage" fashion, let's put it this
way: that amounts to about $15 million a year.
The Ballon d'Or is nothing if not a lightning rod for controversy and year-long verbal sparring
matches with inflatable gloves. Yes, some deserving players win it. Others not so deserving also
win it. In short, it's like nearly every other award handed out by any other organization in the
world. But perhaps worth the debate is [.
'Who Ate All the Pies' writer Ollie Irish sum's it up best today...
'Ballack was immense in Germany's win over Portugal. He inspired his team-mates to play above their
level, which is the true measure of a world-class player - Diego Maradona, a better player than
Ballack, had the same effect on his Argentine team-mates.

With the European Champions now over, it is time to look back at the players who made the
tournament one to remember.
From the daring Turks to the high-flying Russians to the dynamic Dutch, there were plenty of
standout players in the tournament, but only 11 can make the Euro 2008 Best XI.
The most striking facet of today's game at Stamford Bridge wasn't the scoreline, the fact that
Chelsea could afford to win 4-0 without Ballack (injured at the 37th minute), Essien or Drogba, or
Deco's assured performance or the fact that this Chelsea has a swagger that the the Chelsea of
04/05 and 05/06 had.
The Premier League's second and third placed sides will face off on Sunday as a day of giant
battles concludes. North London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are separated by only two points after a
recent slump in the Gunners form, and the Blues could leapfrog the Gunners if they win on Sunday.
Manchester United, who sit one place and three points ahead of Arsenal, play Liverpool at Old
Trafford earlier the same day.
Most Valuable Player of the Season: Michael Ballack
Joe Cole was the official player of the season, a fair choice no doubt. But I believe Ballack has
meant more to the squad, particularly during an end-of-season run on two fronts. Ballack currently
my mancrush along with Shia LaBeouf powered the Blues with not only massive performances but with a
leadership and confidence the club most definitely drew from.
EURO 2008: Germany 2:0
Poland (Klose 20', 72') Klagenfurt
The pre-tournament favourites
announced themselves in Euro 2008 with a 1-0 win over Poland in Klagenfurt.
We all know that money is no object to Chelsea, especially when Roman Abramovich continues to financially support the club with his small change. Where the Blues are involved, other clubs know that they can often add a zero to player's price tags and be fairly optimistic that their suitors will stump up the readies [.
Its a pretty empty studio at halftime for the last round of matches. Rece Davis with Julie
Foudy. Its a relief not to hear or look at that gnome Tommy Smyth who pound for pound is the most
obnoxious and annoying sports pundit. His buffoonish attempts at humour are usually swatted away by
Derek Rae with , "I won't go there.
A draw simply wouldn't have been enough for the Blues and Michael Ballack's controversial late
penalty puts them level on points with Manchester United with just two matches remaining this
season. However, it's difficult to see the champions slipping up in either of their final two
matches - West Ham at home is about as [.
Goodness me, what a catalogue of incidents to report both during and after the big match on
Saturday. There was the usual 'controversial' refereeing decisions made, including the award of a
penalty to Chelsea for an apparent 'ball-to-hand', the non-award of a penalty at the other end of
the pitch after Michael Ballack got up [.
No, COS is not making fun of Deputy Drogba, nor are we laughing at Nicolas Anelka, we're laughing
with the latter who has revealed a rather humorous side to his personality. The Daily Mail lift the
lid on Chelsea's French striker (original interview with Four Four Two magazine) who has been
lazily tagged 'Le Sulk' [.
Tonight's first quarter final is being billed as C-Ron vs Ballack. But is it as simple as that?
Germany They looked mediocre in the group stages, apart from one solid win over Poland, and I don't
read too much into...
I'm switching back and forth from ESPN Deportes and regular ESPN for this, the first major clash of
the quarterfinals.
The nearly-consensus #1 player in the world and his posse versus the German machine of soccer
efficiency.
Mario Kempes is calling out Ballack and Ronaldo, saying they have to step up for their teams.
Globe and Mail columnist Stephen Brunt on Russian hero Andrei Arshavin,
"[Arshavin is] maybe, for all of the talk of Ronaldo and Deco and Villa and Torres and
Ballack, the best player here."
I realize Brunt is aiming for a sensationalist line, a line to shock all us readers.
While the smell of corporate jollies is far less obvious than at the World Cup, that still has
not stopped ten brands from trying their best to muscle in on the Beautiful Game again.
A credit card company, villains of the 2006 World Cup, when they managed to persuade FIFA to deny
bearers of any rival cards from using them to buy tickets, are one of the terrible ten at EURO
2008, as are an American fast food giant, purveyors of the sort of diet that will never make you a
footballer.

You might be forgiven for thinking that the Blues have enough attacking options, especially when
Didier Drogba recovers from injury. Along with Anelka, Shevchenko and Kalou, Chelsea have a
formidable set of forwards, while the likes of Deco, Lampard, Ballack and Cole all 'know where the
goal is'. However, the .
"It's all too beautiful", the Small Faces reminded me on Sunday when Ji-Sung Park
scored his 18th minute goal.
I've had a bit of a pop at him over the last few days and I'm not afraid to say that I loved Mr
Park for a few minutes on Sunday. Just a few minutes, mind you. I still think he doesn't deserve a
place in the starting line-up but he WILL win me round if he keeps scoring important goals.
Avram Grant doesn't look like the type of manager capable of delivering rockets up player's
backsides during half-time, but that's exactly what he did against Fulham on Tuesday, according to
the Daily Telegraph. The Israeli was missing several key players for the match, including Drogba,
Terry, Lampard and Cech, yet the Blues still managed to [.
You can always rely on Jose Mourinho to open his big mouth at the drop of a hat. He failed to steer
Chelsea to a Champions League final during his three seasons at the club, something that clearly
still rankles with the Portuguese fool. Why else would he jump on the anti-Avram Grant bandwagon as
[...
While the likes of Ricardo Carvalho and Paolo Ferreira were always going to praise the appointment
of Big Phil Scolari as the new Chelsea manager, it's naturally more interesting to hear the
thoughts of the non-Portuguese players in the camp. Germany's Michael Ballack has stepped forward
to deliver his verdict and reveals that he's delighted [.
Mario Gomez's footwear is not built for speed
So far under Joachim Low, the Germans have looked flat in the first big tournament in the post
Klinsmann era. The mojo is missing and it is missing badly, especially from Mario Gomez who missed
an absolute sitter. All it required was a tap in from a Klose pass.
This is the first quarterfinal in this tournament. Germany had a tough last match in the group
against Austria. Ballack became player of the match with his 1-0 goal. Portugal showed their
strenght, and had no problems qualifying to the quarterfinal. Watch the highlights at

Wow, what a screamer for Ballack in Germany's 1-0 win over Austria.
The first goal scored directly from a free kick in this tournament was an absolute beauty.
So just 7 teams left after the Portugal dive school were sent home last night by Herr Ballack & Co
in yet another pulsating tie! Let's hope the remaining fixtures will live up to the previous
fortnights feast of football. Let's hope Fabio is taking it all in and moulding an England where
attacking flair football conquers all and even-numbered summers of under-achievement and
self-loathing blossom into the achievements of 66!
Or was the loss just because the Portuguese have a very dodgy keeper? Sure enough, Ricardo might be
able to save (and score) a penalty or two, but his team's inability to defend simple set pieces
meant there was very little chance of Thursday night's match going to a penalty shoot-out in order
for him [.
Luiz Felipe Scolari will be formally announced as Chelsea's new manager on 1st July - will this
mean sweeping changes, including a new captain? The Brazilian will have noticed the impressive
performances of Michael Ballack during Euro 2008, especially as his finest hour came against
Portugal, the team that Scolari managed.
