A proper ASEAN Cup its becoming!
It's not been the best of starts for SLeague champions Tampines Rovers but they are slowly dragging
themselves back up to the top part of the table. Coming from behind and needing an own goal to
overcome Young Lions may not be the chosen method of securing three points but that's what they had
to do last night but they won't be grumbling too much.
There's never a dull moment in Singapore. Last night we saw the champions Tampines Rovers defeated
at home by SAFFC while Home United were turned over by Tanjong Pagar 1-0. A Tanjong Pagar team it
will be remembered, possibly, who shipped five to Young Lions last time out.
Which all means the SLeague table remains its freshness albeit with a distinctly foreign feel to
it.

If anyone had said that Woodlands Wellington would have been top of the SLeague at any time during
the 2012 I would have asked them politely to lie down and stop taking drugs. The Rams are bottom of
the table fodder and have been since I have been following the game there.
But after two games they are second in the table only 'cos Albirex Niigata have a better goal
difference.
(The entry is formulated based on the transcript of the media release issued by Starhub, the
official broadcaster of the S.League 2012)
StarHub, the Official Broadcaster of the S.League, is extending its ‘live' match coverage to
everyone (including non-StarHub subscribers) via frequency 76.
In a new bid to attract more interest it seems the SLeague have come up with a novel way of
releasing the fixture list for the new season. Taking a leaf from the harry Potter movies they are
announcing them bit by bit. The logic, such as it is, is that if it's good enough for JK Rawlings'
teen magicians it's gotta be good enough for the SLeague.
Indonesia Premier League
PSMS v Persebaya 1-2Persiraja v Persija (!) 3-3
Other games were scheduled but never happened. Arema flew all the way to Papua to play
Persipura...but last year's champions had already withdrawn from the league and were playing n the
Inter Island Cup. Who the hell allowed them to fly when they had no opponent?
Ahmad Latif's goal just after the hour mark means that the SLeague won't be decided until Sunday
when both Home United and Tampines Rovers play their final game of the season.
You could say it's advantage Tampines as they have a narrow one point lead going into Crunch Sunday
(hey, ESPN do it all the time) but Home United have the superior goal difference.

- 2011 Sultan of Selangor Cup - (Match Day and Balik Kampong)
Malay rock legend Amy Search (pictured above) wowed the 65,000 at the Shah Alam Stadium in this
annual event initiated by the Sultan of Selangor with motive in fostering relationship between
Singapore and Selangor whom both shared an unique rivalry in the Malayan football history.
I have been most remiss in my coverage of the SLeague in recent weeks and I do apologise for that.
I hope to take some games in before the end of the season though.
So how do we stand as we enter the final furlong? I think it's fair to say it's a two horse race as
the table shows;
1 - Home United 29 22 2 5 72-28 682 - Tampines Rovers 29 21 3 5 60-23 66
Four games remaining and a two point difference make for another exciting climax to the SLeague.
- S.League Match- Balestier Khalsa 0-1 Tampines Rovers (6/8/11)
Ahmad Latiff (pictured above in yellow jersey) delivered the sucker punch at the last kick of the
game to help Tampines Rovers beat Balestier Khalsa 1-0 at Toa Payoh Stadium.
While the Tigers had a Mark McGough's goal disallowed which they claimed the Aussie's effort had
crossed the goal line before Lions defender Fahrudin Mustafic cleared for safety in the first half.
Udo Fortune had a phenomenal season with Persiba Bantul in the Divisi Utama in season 2010/2011. As
well as helping the team to get promotion to the Indonesia Super League he personally managed to
net an impressive 34 goals.
Now however it appears he is not willing to stay with the team based near Yogyakarta and is looking
for a new team.
I know the general perception in Singapore is that their football is shite but then most of them
sold their soul to the EPL a decade back and pine for queen and empire once more.
But the SLeague continues to be one of the most exciting leagues in the region.
Not like Thailand where Buriram PEA had won the TPL before the season had kicked off, allegedly, or
Indonesia where much depends on outside factors.

That's five straight wins now for Geylang United with nothing let in. Not bad considering they had
won only two of their opening 13 games!
Dan Hammond is reported to have signed for Geylang United. If true then the English defender is
almost half way through his one man tour of the SLeague. He started his career with Young Lions
before moving to Woodlands Wellington, Balestier Khalsa and this year SAFFC.
However he had struggled to break into the SAFFC team with Daniel Bennett and Bah Mamadou providing
consistency at the back for the Warriors.

The much awaited national provisional squad list was made know just a hour ago at the Jalan Besar

As I said a few days back the SLeague is already shaping into another classic season and I am
really looking forward to my next visit there. Dunno when mind!
These are the results of recent days I have missed. There have been some changes to the schedule
and I don't have the latest one so am kind of in the dark on what's on the horizon!
It hasn't been much of a season for Young Lions in the SLeague so far. They have just one win and
three goals from their opening eight games. The early season circus of Pele etc has been forgotten
as the season has now become one defeat after another; the latest coming in the last minute against
title challengers Home United.
With 10 games gone SLeague new boys Tanjong Pagar United have yet to light up the compeition.
Indeed, the opposite is true; they have become the whipping boys of the league as a team combined
of young players with the odd older head struggle to make any kind of impression beyond a team to
boost your goal difference against.

Twenty-five year old Khairul Anwar, born with cerebral palsy, has waited a lifetime to take part in
a football league, representing his country.
In a joint press release statement by scouting agency, Trebol Sports International (TSI) and their
working partners, Football Management International (FMI) had announced the following player,
Scottish defender Graham Tatters (pictured above, courtesy of Flickr) had signed for Woodlands
Wellington.
