The United States faced El Salvador on Saturday September 5, 2009 in CONCACAF 2010World Cup
Qualifying. Both teams needed points from the match, especially El Salvador, who's chances of
qualification are slim have to get wins. The USA on the other hand is not in dire need but needs to
get wins at home after losing to Mexico and the top four teams very close.
DC United hosts Marathon on Sept 24 at RFK Stadium for CONCACAF Champions League. Last night
Marathon took on Toluca. Toluca just helped United have a chance to go further in the Champions
League by beating Marathon, by 7 goals! This could be the best opportunity DC has had since
competing in the Champions League in the last 2 seasons.
A quick roundup of the weekend's games for Colorado's college soccer teams:

UNIVERSITY OF DENVER 1, COLGATE 0 2OT: Senior midfielder Kelli Breidenbach scored on an

at Prentup Field in Boulder.

You won't find a bargain player I love
more in the Fantasy Premier League than Stoke's Liam Lawrence (5.5M). The free kick specialist has
yet to find the back of the net for his club this season, but his first international goal today
was surely a beauty.
Let's get this straight. There is the game. The one that involves 22 players dribbling, passing,
and shooting, trying to get past their opponents to stick the ball in the back of the net. It is a
game of individual skill and vision or small bits of...
The English Carling Cup continued on Wednesday with several of the Premier League clubs playing
each other in crucial matches including Manchester City v Fulham, Chelsea v Queens Park Rangers and
Manchester United v Wolverhampton. Here's a recap of these matches along with video highlights.
Chelsea edges Queens Park Rangers 1-0 Video Highlights
Chelsea rested several of their regular starters as they struggled in the first half to get a
lead on Queens Park Rangers.
After scoring on the pre-season against Boca Juniors, Anderson found the back of the net again
when playing with the Reserves against Wigan Reserves last night.
United went a goal behind before Anderson equalised just before half time. Magnus Eikrem scored
the winner for United early in to the second half.
Liedson's first cap for Portugal was a memorable one as the Brazilian now Portuguese striker scored
late on a header from a corner kick to give Portugal a draw against Group Leaders Denmark 1-1.
Portugal played a strong game but as is the norm could not find the back of the net and a late
first half goal by Bendtner gave Denmark a 1-0 lead at the half.
Juan Martin Del Potro, only the second Argentinian after Guillermo Vilas to win the US Open and
that too beating Roger Federer, might make the Argentinians forget how badly their team is faring
in the World Cup qualifiers.
Then again looking at his towering 6'6" frame, if I were Maradona, I see infinite
possibilities.
The Fire had it all to fight for on Sunday afternoon against the Columbus Crew. First place in
the East, a shot at the Supporter's Shield, home field advantage in the playoffs, you name it and
the Fire had it in their grasp this afternoon at Toyota Park but in the end it all slipped away as
the two sides played to a very controversial 2-2 draw.

Prior to today's match there were talks that both Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique were going to be
rested against Santander. Messi would receive rest because of a busy week ahead and Pique for a
knock he suffered over the weekend against Athletico Madrid. But when the starting lineups were
announced both players appeared.
The semi-final game in the Swedish Cup will be a game that will live on in the memories of AIK
supporters for a long time to come. One of the most mind-boggling last minute turnarounds brought
AIK to a sixteenth cup final with a solid chance at an eight cup title.
AIK was the best team over 90 minutes and it looked like it was going to be yet another 1-0 win
following an early goal from Ivan Obolo.

It was a relatively light weekend for the Americans Abroad, but there was still plenty to talk
about at despite the
Mike Grella scored the game-winning goal for Leeds United in their 2-0 win over Stockport
County. Grella, who was subbed out in the 72nd minute, netted in the ninth.
Lennon's cross arcs over the box. It hones in on Steven Gerrard who waits just outside the
crowd. He jumps, coils his neck and smashes the ball toward goal. His header flies down into the
net. 2-0 to England.
I'm an American, but I still get chills when Gerrard scores for his country.
You may have seen Luciano Emilio's goal last night in the team's 1-0 win over the visiting
Wizards, but did you really take note of the hustle and awareness seen on the play from the
Brazilian?
Jump ahead to the 2:05 mark to watch the goal again:
Take a look at who Christian Gomez plays the short corner - Senõr Emilio.
Goals from David Amoo and substitute Tony Silva secured the points for Rodolfo Borrell's men as
they brought a run of two straight defeats to an end with a hard-working display against the
Yorkshire outfit.
Having conceded five goals without reply against both Nottingham Forest and Leicester City,
confidence was low going into the clash with the Tykes and it was no surprise to see the Reds
youngsters make a tentative start to the proceedings.
Youngster makes loan move permanent.
Liverpool today confirmed the sale of midfielder Ryan Flynn to Scottish Premier League
side Falkirk.
The 20-year-old Scot was on a season-long loan with The Bairns but the deal has now been made
permanent.
Flynn, who originally joined the Academy from Falkirk in 2006, was a key part of our successive
FA Youth Cup wins, scoring in the final against Man City in 2006 and bagging three goals during the
2007 campaign.
Eduardo scored a late winner as Arsenal staged a second-half comeback to win 3-2 at Standard
Liege in their Champions League Group H opener.
Arsenal found themselves two down inside five minutes with Eliaquim Mangala's low drive followed by
a Milan Jovanovic penalty.
Boro have confirmed the loan signings of Sean St Ledger from Preston North End and Caleb Folan
from Hull City to strengthen the squad ahead of the promotion push.
St Ledger is a central defender who comes in to the squad as a replacment for Robert Huth.
Currently young Seb Hines is partnering David Wheater at the heart of the Boro defence so there is
a good chance of St Ledger working his way into the first team.

In a game that is always entertains, the Irish ensured that the pecking order established by the
recent State Coaches poll remained intact, finally wearing down their Northern neighbor with a pair
of goals in the 2nd half that made the difference.
There are a lot of things that worry me about Liverpool FC's team this season. The match against
West Ham United was a perfect example where they were fortunate to win after West Ham United played
them off the park for large portions of the match.
To me, Liverpool were blessed by individual performances at Upton Park that smoothed over a
couple of weaknesses:
- Jamie Carragher had a poor game compared to his typical performances, but there's no
hiding the fact that both of Liverpool's centre backs were unable to deal with the pace of the
opposition.
Now why would you think I am worried about RSL making the playoffs?
But sometimes, you have to face reality. Real looked awful out of the blocks in Houston. It was
as if RSL was still working at fifty percent effort at the start of the game while the Houston
Dynamo was playing at high tempo.
TORONTO - Looking to put the '09 season behind them, Pistolas FC look to regroup today for the
final match of the year; the 3rd place consolation finals.
"The team needs to put forth their best effort and go out on a winning note. As with every match,
no team can be taken lightly, as was the case last week against Inter Selects.
Week 24 threw up a few little surprises in Major League Soccer, including defeat for both Houston
Dynamo and Columbus Crew, another win for New York Red Bulls and something vaguely resembling
consistency from Real Salt Lake.
The week's action began in Salt Lake last Wednesday, where RSL thumped
Chivas USA 4-0.
Roberto Soldado
Soldado had a dream start to his 2009/10 season. The forward would lead Getafe to a 4-1
victory over Racing Santander. Soldado achieved the rare hat trick in the match and helped put
Getafe on the right track with an away victory to start off the year.
90 mins And that's it! After an enthralling second-half, the game comes to an
end. Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal
89 mins FOUR minutes of stoppage time
89 mins Robin van Persie has hit the post! That would have made things
interesting!
Both Manchester clubs picked up deserved wins on Saturday as they squared off against two of
London's biggest clubs. Manchester City taught Arsenal a lesson at The City of Manchester Stadium
in a 4-2 thrashing as Manchester United enjoyed the best of times at White Hart Lane in a 3-1 win
against Tottenham.
Marquette 1-0 Minnesota
Milwaukee, Wis. 09/13/2009
In the second match of their weekend trip to Milwaukee, Wis. the University of Minnesota soccer
team met up with a Marquette team coming off wins in four of their last five matches. After the two
teams played scoreless into halftime, the Golden Eagles scored early in the second half to provide
the difference as the Golden Gophers fell by the 1-0 final.
Sir Alex Ferguson made a few changes to tonight's line-up, picking a team which was capable of
picking up the points, whilst making sure we have enough fresh players for derby day at the
weekend. Gary Neville started in place of John O'Shea, Jonny Evans for Rio Ferdinand, whilst Darren
Fletcher and Ryan Giggs were also given a rest.

all Canadian opponents. The Victoria Highlanders PDL side is either tougher than one would expect,
or the Aztex were showing the effects of 4 games in 8 days and a less-than-stellar conclusion to
the 2009 season.
After experiencing a promising start in the top flight by defeating the current Premiership
champions, Burnley's form went crashing down with two heavy road defeats at the hands of Chelsea
and Liverpool, 3-0 and 4-0 respectively. Now, they have to defend their perfect record at home
against Sunderland, who come pumped and ready after thrashing Hull City 4-1 at home.

Manchester United-Besiktas
It wasn't by any means a spectacular win, but it was a win none the less for Man U on Tuesday
night against Turkish squad Besiktas. The Red Devils were held to only five shots on goal
throughout the match and were only able to put the ball into the back of the net once.
The Hammers were out to get over a dismal start to the season. Liverpool was ready to steady a
shaky ship say that five times fast and improve on their 4-0 win over Burnley from the week before.
Both teams came to play at Upton Park on Saturday, and neither time gave in throughout the entirety
of the match.
Flagler College (3-3-1) came into the Lions' University Field on Wednesday afternoon and stole an
early goal in the fifth minute of play and held on for a win despite being out shot by St Leo 23-6.
A crowd of 381 watched as the Lions (3-3-0) could not find the back of the net to equalize.
Flagler's Conor Killen scored off an assist by Mack Hough in what proved to be the game's only
goal.
Just six games in to the season and there will be some people who are totally baffled by
Manchester United's start to the season. We were supposed to struggle to find the back of the net
in Cristiano Ronaldo's absence but have already achieved in six matches what it took us ten games
to do last season, by scoring 15 goals.
So the Greeks are here in the big city, but I don't expect them to have a smashing time tonight.
Tonight will be a game full of goals, our goals and a big win!
No Nik as he decided to take part in a Grand Prix on Sunday morning and came off the track on
the first bend – twit!
No Theo as he is playing behind closed doors against an Olympiacos second string and no Denilson
as he has a fracture in his back and is out for two months.
Fernando Torres is usually bang on target – and he certainly was after his hat-trick against Hull
City on Saturday.
Rather than basking in the glory of his outstanding individual achievements, the Spaniard was right
to point out that it's winning the major trophies that really matters in a player's career.
FC Barcelona, defending UEFA Champions League winners, had their second match of the group stage
against Dynamo Kiev. Barcelona has looked great in the Spanish La Liga and appears ready to make
another deep run in the European competition while Dynamo Kiev is aiming to make the knockout
stage.
FC Barcelona beats Dynamo Kiev 2-0 Video Highlights
Barcelona was dominant at home once again against Dynamo Kiev as they had 81% of possession in
the first half.
It seemed like every week last season somebody from Everton was deserving of the Wednesday
Wonder. This season, though, as short as it has been, has not been the case. With expectations
extremely high at Goodison Park after a fantastic season for an exciting Everton squad, their start
to this season has been less than impressive.
