The goals from Sunday's two Promoción second leg matches, which resulted in both Gimnasia La Plata
and Rosario Central keeping their places in the Primera A, are now online and you can watch them
right here. Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 3 0 Atlético Rafaela (3-3 agg., Gimnasia stay up due to
'sporting advantage') Rosario Central [.
If the AFA thought they had problems with crowd control in the top flight for the last few seasons,
they can't have been happy bunnies on Monday. Chacarita Juniors, whose previous spells in Primera A
have been most notable for very badly behaved crowds, most infamously (and tragically) when playing
Boca Juniors, are back in [.
Last season they were playing in the Torneo Argentino A, the third division section for clubs not
affiliated to the AFA, but on Sunday Atlético Tucumán ensured their city will continue to have
Primera División representation next season by thrashing relegation-threatened Talleres de
Córdoba 4-1 to confirm the B Nacional title.
The big finale of the 2009 Torneo Clausura has seen its first act played out with a late winner for
visitors Lanús in Tucumán and a victory for the hosts in La Plata which see Gimnasia La Plata
secure a relegation playoff spot ahead of San Martín de Tucumán, who go straight down to B [...]
Needing a three-goal win against a team they'd never previously beaten in three encounters the most
recent of which was just three days ago Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata left it oh so late but, in the
last twenty minutes, they struck three times the last two goals coming with only nine [...]
The threat of postponement to the start of the 2008-2009 season has been hanging over Argentine
football since the official fixture list for the Primera División was released last week. On
Wednesday AFA President Julio Grondona declared that the decision has been taken to provisionally
'postpone all the championships until Futbolístas Argentinos Agremadios [the players' [.
At least not yet. After a summer transfer break full of 'yes he will... no he won't... yes he
will...' style changing of minds, Ariel Ortega will not be returning to River Plate for the
Clausura. At least not as of 9:30pm Argentine time on the 5th February. This will probably have
changed at least [.
The first leg of the first Promoción (playoff) for a place in the Primera División next season in
Córdoba, and top flight incumbents Rosario Central had goalkeeper Jorge Broun to thank for a clean
sheet against hosts Belgrano which allowed Jesús Méndez to settle a very tight match with a
tremendous drive from outside the [.
In the second Promoción between Primera A and B Nacional, Atlético Rafaela hosted Gimnasia y
Esgrima La Plata on Thursday afternoon in the first leg. The result was the heaviest win for a B
Nacional side over a Primera A team since the Promoción was introduced, courtesy of a hat trick
from striker Aldo Visconti.
At last, after much coming and going, it's confirmed: the 2009 Torneo Apertura will begin this
coming Friday (and in time for the new season, we've got a bit of a surprise for you, of which more
later in the week...). A discussion on Saturday at the AFA saw a planned schedule for the weekend
[...]
The goals from the weekend's football action in Argentina are online now, and as you can see them
on the TN Sportblog, whose video this week deigns the round worthy of having all its goals shown
(something they've neglected to do on two occasions already this season). For the goals from the
Primera División, click [.
That headline could have gone atop an article on Tuesday night's European Cup semi-final first leg,
but it doesn't. In Primera B, also on Tuesday, there was a vital clash. Córdoba played host to the
city clásico between Belgrano and Talleres, two sides with wildly differing fortunes at present,
and it wasn't a pretty one.
On Saturday afternoon, Ferro Carril Oeste beat Chacarita Juniors 2-0 to leave things at the top of
B Nacional more congested than ever, but later on was another meeting of title chasers, as Vélez
Sársfield, top of Primera A, hosted Racing Club, who amazingly would have gone fifth with a win.
Some thing never change, [.
After falling out with River Plate over the appalling pitch surface for the recent World Cup
qualifier at home to Colombia, the AFA have submitted a request to FIFA that Rosario Central's
stadium, El Gigante Del Arroyito, be accredited as an alternative venue. It's possible the
qualifier against Brazil could be played there if the [.
The clubs of Primera B Nacional, Argentina's second division, voted on Sunday to change the system
for deciding promotion to Primera A as from next season. There is nothing very exciting and plenty
that's very confusing in these changes, but they'll be important this time next year so I'll do my
best to explain them [.
Photo by guille rusconi on the HEGS Flickr pool It's a bit late this year, but with the pre-seasons
well and truly underway it's about time HEGS explained the teams who will be changing divisions
this year. We've got the Copa Sudamericana participants, and every promotion and relegation through
the Argentine league, down to and including [.
Argentine sides enter The Copa Sudamericana on Tuesday night, with Tigre hosting San Lorenzo in the
first leg of their preliminary round tie as I type, but I'm buggered if I'm staying up until the
thing finishes the goals will be online on Wednesday night. Given the fuss over the Primera
División TV rights [.
On Monday night Chacarita Juniors took one step closer to the horrific possibility of clashing once
more with Boca Juniors next season after beating Unión de Santa Fe 4-2 in Ferro's stadium. Javier
Toledo hit a hat-trick to move El Funebrero six points clear at the top of the Primera B Nacional
table.
In the remaining second leg of this year's Promoción in Primera A, Rosario Central eased to a 1-1
draw at home to Belgrano de Córdoba which confirms their participation in Primera A next season
thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win. In a match that was considerably less dramatic than the ridiculous
Gimnasia comeback against Rafaela which [.
