Well... you know what they say, right? "We got the three points, that's the most important
thing". If only... While the saying may be true, this Italy team will not get very far by
playing like they did against Cyprus on Saturday. A shaky defense, a serious lack of concentration,
and a weak offensive thrust are [.
Mission accomplished for Italy's U21 team. In order to qualify for the Euro 2009 knock-out round, a
win or a draw against Croatia was necessary for Casiraghi's boys Tuesday, a task which the
Azzurrini completed with brio. In truth, the final scoreline doesn't really reflect how this match
played out, because of over 83 minutes [.
Ladies & gentlemen, the "We just won the World Cup" logo is born. For the first time in
football history, a national side will be able to display a logo (a world cup on a white
background, with the words "FIFA World Champions") on their shirts to reflect they are
the current title holders. And [...]
So it seems to be a FIFA rule that each national team manager must submit a mega-list of 50
players that will be available for selection for World Cup qualifying games. I'm unsure about the
rules of this list and if/when players can be changed or added (and info about these lists are hard
to find, the list was unveiled by a Fiorentina website) but it does show you the players that the
national team manager has in consideration.
In the modern game you always hear stories of players being prima donnas or trying to get a
bigger contract or making a move to a big club just for the money, but Ciro Ferrara was a player
who was none of those things. Ferrara was a model professional, a consistent performer, and even if
he wasn't world renowned during his playing career he is simply one of the best defenders Italy has
ever produced.
You know the Rugby Six nations Championship? The one involving the England, France, Ireland, Italy,
Scotland and Wales rugby national teams and taking place every year? Well, the French Football
Federation (FFF) and Club France 2010 (the management company taking care of all things Les Bleus
till the 2010 World Cup) have had this crazy [.
After the delusion that was the Olympic games, the Azzurrini returned to the pitch to continue
qualifying for the UEFA 2009 U21 Championships. The big story was the debut of Mario Balotelli, who
after receiving Italian citizenship a few weeks ago was finally eligible to be called up. The
Azzurrini needed a win to guarantee first place in the qualifying group, but anything less meant
they would have to conquer qualification on Tuesday in Croatia.
Despite an early lead off a well struck shot by Di Natale into the bottom
left-hand corner of the Cyprus goal, Cyprus with their attacking play, equalized in the
29th minute off the foot of Aloneftis. Italy have been the victim of poor defending however no
blame can be given to Gigi Buffon the Italian keeper, as Cyprus kept pushing and eventually
dominated the [.
"I will make many changes" said Lippi after the Cyprus game. And that's exactly what
we're expecting on Wednesday, when Italy receives Georgia at Stadio Friuli of Udine. Particularly
we are looking at a big overhaul in defense, because the zone of the field which historically has
made them famous is looking very shaky in [.
We heard the battle cries and chilling declarations after the crazy injury to Gennaro Gattuso, but
now we get to see the incident. And it's not as much the fault of the pitch as they made it seem.
It actually appears like....Gattuso didn't look where he was going while backpedaling briskly
(don't tell him I [.
On Wednesday night, as Italy battled Georgia and the sky of Udine radiantly displayed its Azzurri
colors, there was a slight touch of giallorosso on the almighty's paintbrush. With Andrea Pirlo now
wearing nº10 (stupid FIFA rules) and a certain Francesco Totti still keeping his retirement
vows, things have been a bit confusing with Azzurri [.
Marcello Lippi's first two competitive games at the helm of the Azzurri left no surprises as Italy
took victories in both of their World Cup 2010 qualification matches. In the first match of Italy's
qualification campaign, a shocking draw seemed to be on the cards until Antonio di Natale's strike
found .
It'll be Israel for the Azzurrini. Pierluigi Casiraghi's Italy U-21 team discovered their playoff
phase opponent this Friday, after the Euro 2009 Under 21 Draw that gifted us clashes like Germany
vs. France and Wales vs. England. The home-and-away matches will be played on October 11/12 and
14/15 (with match venues, dates and kick-off times to [.
(first, sorry for the lack of posts the last two days, we'll be back on scheduled
programming starting now)
Daniele De Rossi scored his first ever "doppietta" (brace) in an Azzurri shirt to give
Italy the 3 points vs. Georgia. Italy now have 6 points for the first two games and have made an
excellent start to World Cup Qualfying, despite their mediocre play.
Sorry for the lack of updates, but there's been zilch news on the international front. Buffon is
injured but should be back in time for our next qualifiers. Pirlo is out for 2 months so we'll have
to make due without him. Everything else- including the call ups- still are yet to be announced. So
for an Azzurri blog, it's kinda hard to write when there's no Azzurri news.
The 2008/2009 Serie A season has finally kicked off, and what a weekend it was. There were so
many interesting games and results. For the first time since 1984, none of the big teams have full
points after the first game. Hopefully this is a sign that this season will be very exciting and
interesting.
La Gazzetta dello Sport Balotelli: A true Italian - makes his Azzurri debut this
evening against Greece (il grande momento) President Berlusconi speaks out on violence (by
defending Napoli?): Napoli shouldn't pay Zamparini, 27 sackings - From Palermo, Out goes
Colantuono, in comes Ballardini _________________ Balotelli was born in Palermo and is the
son of Ghanaian immigrants.
18 years... Super Mario's wait was a long one, but it was worth it: not even a month after
receiving his official Italian citizenship papers, Balotelli has already conquered Italian hearts.
His goal vs. Greece's U-21 team today was magnificent, but alas was not enough for the Azzurrini to
get an automatic bye to the [.
Interesting story today from Tuttosport. On the last day of the transfer window, Palermo signed
26 year old striker Davide Succi from Lega Pro side Ravenna. The Milan youth team product was one
of the best strikers in Serie B last season, scoring 18 goals but unable to save Ravenna from
relegation.

Thank you Mr. De Rossi for your two goals against Hector Cuper's Georgia and what goals they
were. With a canon shot in the 16th minute, coming from over 25 yards out, Daniele
De Rossi would provide Italy the match winner. No chance for the Georgian keeper as
De Rossi's kick from straight out was rising and curved into [.

Lucky? Marcello Lippi isn't afraid of stating the obvious. In the first two games of his new
managerial position (the 2-2 draw vs. Austria -courtesy of a goalkeeping blunder- and the
painstaking 2-1 win over Cyprus on Saturday) lady luck was a big factor for the Azzurri, and their
manager freely admits it.
I noticed that a lot of club pages over at theoffside have season previews up. I thought it'd be
a good idea to do something similar with the Azzurri. But a country's schedule is nothing like a
club's schedule, so how would this work?
