I'm happy for Salt Lake fans and all, but let's face it, Columbus losing is going to have some
horrifying consequences.
(1) Some may suggest that Frankie Hejduk should not be on the World Cup roster next year. What,
just because, contrary to what I predicted, he played perhaps the single biggest role in the Crew
losing?

We have had a great deal of discussion this week about officials' bias in CONCACAF towards
Mexico. However, I was a bit disappointed that many American fans see the US as a victim in all
this. The truth be told, the US benefits from much of the same bias, albeit perhaps from different
parts within CONCACAF.

Blanco's Unsporting Ways Led Mexico to Qualification
PREFACE
This blog post is long overdue. My distinct hope was that Mexico WOULD NOT qualify
for South Africa, and this article which is sure to arouse controversy would not need to be
written.

Mexico clobbers El Salvador 4-1, in front of a sellout crowd
at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Our friend Blanco "technically" scored two of
them, although he was awarded just one.
The US surprised everyone including Coach Bradley by leading Honduras and
closing it down 3-2.

It all depends on your point of view, either as a partisan or a neutral observer, but there are a
couple of scenarios that would settle everything in the Hexagonal or leave everything in doubt
until Wednesday night. We are practically down to four teams that will finish within any of the top
four positions.

When the U.S. men's national team takes the field in Honduras, it will see plenty of familiar
faces on the opposing team, but the Americans will see an even more familiar face working the game
as referee.
The match referee for Saturday's World Cup qualifier is Panamanian official Roberto Moreno, a
referee who has become somewhat of a regular in U.

Honduras can qualify for its first world cup in 28 yearsMatchdays 9 and 10 are upon us here in our little corner of the world. I've knocked about a good
number of proverbs and clichés to sum up what we have seen so far in the previous 8 matchdays.
I've landed on "it's not how you start, but how you finish.

You may have read in one of "the trades" this morning that your man SF has messed around and got
himself a job. And despite the fact that it is written on the internet it is actually true: I am
now under the employ of Major League Soccer. I feel like I was relegated and now promoted all in
the span of 3 months.

Not even the Guardian of Forever can bring me back far enough in the past for this it seems. Man,
do the last two weeks feel like an eternity or what? It seems like forever since Dynamo last played
a game, instead of the two weeks since the loss to Colorado.
Hopefully, plenty has changed over that time, and if you need a positive sign, there's this from
the Boz' Facebook page on Sept.

Our postgame podcast will be taped in a few hours. Guests will be Richard Farley of Inside the
Six and World Soccer Reader, along with Jamie Trecker of FOX Sports.
What I plan to address on the pod.
- Officiating at Azteca. Honduras lost on a pk.
- Bob Bradley's job performance: I rate him highly given the USSF's constraints, but I am certain
my guests will differ.

Since thinking through results of soccer matches require a fair bit of perspective, and I'm
often in need of some emotional detachment . . . I'm going to try offering a view double-sided
view of the US v. El Salvador game (and maybe others) via a glass half-empty vs. glass
half-full analogy.

With two relatively straight forward fixtures this week, the United States National Team is
almost guaranteed to be leading the Hexagonal after this international break. But this will
guarantee nothing, as the one time magic 15 point mark for World Cup qualification from CONCACAF is
almost sure to be exceeded by four nations this cycle.

After what was a very successful summer, the MNT is back for two important WCQ. I wanted to talk
about the starting XI I would like to see for the qualifiers. It features Tim Howard in goal, a
standout for Everton and the USMNT alike for some time now. Howard is a legend, and has to be one
of the top 5 keepers in the world, his selection is a no-doubter.

With Carlos Vela out for a month, Javier Aguirre has a choice to make. His call-ups for Mexico's
next two qualifiers will be announced tomorrow, so will he opt for the tried and true... and tired?
Is he going to play it safe with someone he has already seen? Or will he take a chance on an
uncapped, but seriously talented youngster to fill the roster spot.

Why would an American fan go to the Azteca? To brag about it afterwards, and boy, they've earned
it. Somebody should photoshop a "300" poster with "500." Maybe US fans don't look like CGI Spartan
warriors, but I'm sure they can pull off the Leonidas crazy face.
There are some fantastic stories coming in about the fans who returned to America knowing that the
"home of the brave" line was about them specifically.

He might not be the best mainstream American sportswriter, but he's pretty much the bellwether
of mid-America's attitude to sports, as much as we can have one in these fragmented Twittering and

Mexico City for the U.

seems logical to discuss the final chapter.

If you've been listening to Bill Simmons' BS Report podcast lately (and you
should be - most of the time it's really good), you know that he's been slowly and quietly coming
around to the idea of soccer. Now that he's gone to the USA/Mexico match at Azteca and written an
ESPN.com story about how cool it all was, I think we can embrace him as one of ours.

Adam gets brownie points for this:

thought (and really when you think about it would we every really want him?). ESPN's Bill Simmons
is a fantastic writer/sports nut and even though he has written about European and World Cup soccer
before, by his own admission has been a soccer hater from time-to-time.

When Javier Aguirre first started his second tour of duty with the Mexican National Team, he
allowed the working media to watch a full practice, not the customary 10 minutes or so most teams
offer before they close the tent. The quote that earned the honor of most appearances in the press
was Aguirre scolding his forward, Miguel Sabah, after a series of misses.
