When Stuart Pearce said he was bracing himself for the biggest test of his England Under 21 reign, he could not have had Azerbaijan in mind. His young side sauntered to a 6-0 victory at Vicarage Road to start their qualifying campaign for the 2013 European Championship in Israel.

While it's fair to say Sir Alex Ferguson will have been a tad chuffed by Sunday's 8-2 spanking of Arsenal, it did come at a price for the Manchester United manager following the news that Danny Welbeck suffered a hamstring injury. The striker had earlier scored his second goal of the season and the first of his side's eight in this memorable match.

Arsenal's Emmanuel Frimpong and Liverpool's Martin Kelly have withdraw from the England Under 21 squad after picking up injuries over the weekend.
Stewart Pearce was already down on numbers ahead of the matches against Azerbaijan and Israel with Manchester United duo Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley having received call-ups to the senior side ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.
