I have spent most of the day on here catching up with bits and pieces that had been said in recent
weeks leading up to the Champions League final and in this post I want to concentrate on Bobby Di
Matteo's comments at the Player of the Year awards night last week.
People outside of the club would have just taken what he said with a pinch of salt, but for Chelsea
players and supporters it was important to listen.
It's awards night at Old Trafford tonight and one can only feel there'll be an air of regret and
dissatisfaction in the room after yesterday's high's-and-low's saw players and fans alike begin to
dream the impossible before being Earth shatteringly brought back down to Earth in the space of
just a few short seconds.
Celtic's Andre Blackman won Tackle of the Year at the club's annual awards night for taking down
his own manager during a reserves match. The winning tackle -- perhaps voted to success by the many
people who don't like Neil Lennon -- was even helpfully set to the Benny Hill theme by Celtic TV so
it can be enjoyed at its highest level.
Brian O'Connell of ESPN Boston brought up in his piece from yesterday that this Saturday at
Gillette will conclude the Revs' season (at least at home) with their annual awards night. The
awards that will be given out include MVP, Defender of the Year, and Humanitarian of the Year. So,
this got me to thinking: just who might be the most likely candidates for this year's awards?
There's certainly a feel-good factor reverberating around Anfield at the moment, and that was again
in evidence on Wednesday night as Liverpool FC hosted their Ability Counts programme end of season
awards at the stadium.
A total of seven teams gathered in the Shankly Suite as medals were handed out following another
triumphant season across all age groups, while a lucky handful were presented with the Player of
the Year accolade for their personal achievements over the course of the campaign.
Manchester United 2011 Player of the Year was Nani while Javier Hernandez
picked up the fans Player of the award.
