We all know the usual awards after a big game, right? MVP, Best Goal, blah blah blah. Those are so
boring. So, instead, we bring you The Offside's Awards for the Eastern Conference Final: The Ones
They Really Deserved. The "How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away?" Award to: [...]
Cristiano Ronaldo took home the coveted European Footballer of the Year Golden Ball Award in Paris,
France yesterday. The Awards is given to the player who accumulates the most points from fans. That
makes Ronaldo only the fourth player for Manchester United to win such the title. According to
French reporters Ronaldo was extremely [.
Unfortunately for fans of the Azzurri, Italy´s EURO 2008 campaign is now little more than a
distant and shabby memory. While the nation licks its wounds, our resident Italian football
correspondant Henry N. consoles himself by taking one last look back at the 2007/2008 Serie A
campaign and compiling his Team of the Season: GK: Sebastian FREY (Fiorentina)
If you've ever wondered how you could motivate your players to try harder or use soccer moves in a
match, consider awarding soccer patches. In our third year of awarding patches, we've come up with
a wide variety of criteria, encouraging players to work on many aspects of their game.
The end of the season is upon us, with only the UEFA Cup final today and the Champions League final
next week still to go.
It was an exciting year in the Premiership, and it's time to recognize the players who stood out
the most over the long, arduous 38-game schedule. To do that, I'll use some the same categories I
used before the season when I predicted who'd win these superlatives when it was all said and done,
and also add some new ones as well.

The publication France Football will announce the winner of the prestigious Ballon d'Or award
tomorrow morning. Of the 30 players on the shortlist to win the award, you have to believe
that Cristiano Ronaldo will win. Why Cristiano Ronaldo Will Win the Ballon d'Or1. Ronaldo led
his team to the Champions League title.
Phew. After a jampacked holiday schedule that came fast and furious, fans and players alike now get
a chance to catch their breath as the next round of games doesn't come until the 12th. The Carling
Cup semifinals and the 3rd Round of the FA Cup will have to tide everyone over until then and there
should be some pretty good games in both competitions.
Most Valuable Player of the Season: Michael Ballack
Joe Cole was the official player of the season, a fair choice no doubt. But I believe Ballack has
meant more to the squad, particularly during an end-of-season run on two fronts. Ballack currently
my mancrush along with Shia LaBeouf powered the Blues with not only massive performances but with a
leadership and confidence the club most definitely drew from.
If there was any doubting that 2007 and 2008 are some of MLS's best years ever we now have
confirmation from
Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily. MLS took League of The Year, honors. Read more
about it here.
Congrats MLS.

The nominations for the 2008 PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year have been
announced this week, and while in some respects debate on the subject is pointless (Cristiano
Ronaldo is surely a shoe-in to retain his Player of the Year crown, if not both awards) one or two
omissions and inclusions can readily be subjected to scrutiny.

While I try to edit down and pair together a year's worth of notes into some sort of digestible
column on the year that was 2008, check out 2007's offering (has anything changed?) and take a
moment to vote for your favorite online soccer offerings over at USSF and Soccerlens. - banner

It was a battle to the end, but Marcelo Gallardo's goal was voted as the Sierra Mist Goal of the
Week, narrowly beating Amado Guevara's strike. I've probably watched this particular goal more over
the last few days than I have any other over the last four years. Incredible. Here it is again for
your viewing pleasure.
Wow. That's pretty significant news ladies and gentleman. MLS beat out the NBA, MLB, NFL and WTA
Tour for the award. Now that's called taking on the best and winning. Sports Business Journal

Today while on bigsoccer, I came across the fact that this blog has been given an award. The Pitch
today came out with their "Best of KC" awards. And this blog won the award as the
"Best Sports Blog" in KC. I'm a little surprised (actually shock is probably more
appropriate) that the award not only went to me, but to a Wizards, but hey, it's great to be
acknowledged for the work that you do, and to get some more press for the Wizards.

Crew's Marshall wins Defender of the Year. I would have voted for Conrad. He anchored a young back
line. He had to contend with frequently changing lineups around and in front of him and a team that
could rarely give them a lead to work with. Jimmy played every minute this year in leading the team
to 10 shutouts.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Eleventh Annual 3rd Degree Awards. The 3rd Degree Awards were
created in 1998, with the addition of the Spark award in 1999, and the Ember Award in 2006. The
"Thirds" consist of two major categories, FC Dallas awards and League Wide awards, and
are based on regular season play.
Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch was voted the 2008 Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year. New England
Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst was named the winner of the MLS Fair Play award, and the
Revolution earned the MLS Team Fair Play award, recognizing the MLS club with the fewest
disciplinary points during the 2008 regular season (I don't think Khano Smith helped).
MLS announced the 2008 Newcomer and Coach of the year awards today. Columbus Crew Head Coach Sigi
Schmid was voted the 2008 MLS Coach of the Year after, capturing the Supporters' Shield trophy and
first place in the Eastern Conference. San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Darren Huckerby was voted
the 2008 MLS Newcomer of the Year.
