The Wigan - Bolton match being frozen off at the end of gameweek 18 brings home a reminder of the
importance of having a bench with players who are capable of contributing points if they become
needed. With some notable injuries to a few marque players (ala Fabregas) having a solid line up of
quality substitute players becomes even more pressing.

A bit of what's bouncing around Butt's

- Avram Grant plans to raid Chelsea's bench for two players in January.
Hey, look out now, it's a must-win for Chelsea. Avram Grant returns to Stamford Bridge with his
ragged Portsmouth outfit to open the holiday frenzy. The match may represent the club's first real
must-win of the season. Sure, matches against the likes of Arsenal away, and Manchester City were
vital in my view but, following this wretched run of four matches winless, I think the consensus
view will be we must grab three points against the bottom feeders.

Two games, two defeats for new Pompey boss Avram Grant. Man Utd and Villa at home are tough
fixtures though, so we'll let him off, even if we miss Paul Hart's sad Pingu face.
This game was all about the return of Stewart Downing, who scored at Fratton Park last night on
his first start for Villa and looked remarkably rust-free.

- In the early game, Portsmouth won 2-0 at home to Burnley. Avram Grant got his first win and it
came courtesy of a game-changing substitution in the 60th minute. Pompey looked 2nd best throughout

Tal Ben Haim has accused Fernando Torres of leading with his elbow when challenging him in
Portsmouth's win over Liverpool on Saturday.
The Israeli centre-half enjoyed a fine game in helping his side keep a clean sheet but was in the

appeared to catch him with an elbow.
Two thousand Liverpool fans who left home in the early hours and braved icy roads or frozen rails
