The Republic of Ireland opened their their new look Landsdowne Road on Wednesday against
Argentina losing 1-0 with a dubious off-side goal. Lionel Messi was by far the most outstanding
player to line-out for either team and got a standing ovation from the crowd when substituted early
in the second-half.
This year, Ireland celebrates the reopening of Lansdowne Road Stadium under the name Aviva Stadium.
To celebrate the occasion, the IRFU has released a specially designed 2010/11 commemorative jersey
from PUMA. The Ireland PUMA 2010/11 Aviva Stadium Commemorative kit will make its first and only
appearance when Ireland plays its first game at the new stadium [.
The Football Association of Ireland have confirmed that reland will play friendly matches
against Paraguay and Algeria in the RDS on 25 May and 28 May respectively.
The matches will be the last home internationals before the Aviva Stadium, with the first game at
the new ground set for 11 August against Argentina.
The Irish FA confirmed today that Manchester united will play against an Airtricity League XI in
Dublin in a pre season friendly.
The game, which will be part of United's pre season training, will be the first to be played in
the new Aviva stadium.
United Chief Executive David Gill said: "It is a great honour to have been invited to play the
opening football match in the magnificent Aviva Stadium.
Irish Airtricity First Division club Limerick City have been
refused a fixture with Spanish giants Barcelona by the Football
Association of Ireland, who have stated it will interfere with domestic
fixture.
Wayne Rooney could be back in a Manchester United jersey
earlier than expected, with the England striker in line to face an Aircity League XI in the first
game to be played at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin on August 4.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Rooney and the other World Cup players
could come into consideration for the friendly, even though they are not due to return to training
until Wednesday.

A stunning stadium

It is being reported today that the FAI are in talks with the English Football Association
to secure a glamour friendly international between Ireland and England at the Aviva Stadium in June
next year.
The game, if confirmed, will take place on Wednesday 8 June and will be the first senior
international between the two countries since the Landsdowne Road game of 1995 - a game which was
famously abandoned after 28 minutes when English fans rioted and ripped out seating after David
Kelly had put Ireland ahead in the game.
Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given looks set to miss the upcoming friendlies against Paraguay
and Algeria at the RDS after seriously injuring his shoulder in Manchester City's Premier League
draw against Arsenal at The Emirates this evening.
The Donegal born player landed heavily on his left shoulder in pulling off a save from a stinging
Vassiriki Diaby shot and looked in a lot of pain during lengthy treatment on the pitch.
Ireland will play Norway in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium in November.
Giovanni Trapattoni's men, who will by then be four games into the qualifying campaign for Euro
2012, will face the Norwegians in Dublin on 17 November.
The sides last met in a friendly in Oslo in August 2008 when skipper Robbie Keane scored in a 1-1

So, a goal rush to mark the opening of the splendid new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road in
Dublin. Fergie dignified the occasion by fielding a strong side, so the lopsided scoreline was no
big surprise.
Michael Owen was back in business last week scoring a wonderful goal against an
Airtricity ix in the new Lansdowne Road now renamed the >AVIVA STADIUM
It was Owen's first game since tearing his hamstring after scoring for United in the Carling Cup
Final at Wembley on March 12. Owen missed two and a half months of the end of last season with the
tear and blames the Wembley pitch for his injury.
Kevin Doyle has hailed Ireland strike partner Robbie Keane as one of the greats of Irish
football.
Doyle is hoping to be fit to partner Keane in the first ever international match at the Aviva
Stadium on Tuesday when the opposition is provided by star-studded Argentina. The Irish captain
will earn his 100th cap in the game and Doyle says that playing alongside him has only been a
pleasure.
The Ireland team to face Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday evening has been

occasion of Robbie Keane's 100th cap for Ireland.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) today unveiled beer brand Carling as the sponsor of the
inaugural Carling Nations Cup which will see the Republic of Ireland take on Northern Ireland,
Scotland and Wales at the new state of the art Aviva Stadium early next year.
Rebuilding the sense of team after the painful World Cup exit, and following on from the discharge
of Diego Maradona, was never going to be easy for Argentina.
Only a handful of Argentinian press travelled to Dublin, to cover the 1-0 friendly win against
