It's been a week and still even Rémi Gaillard can't quite believe it. Who would have thought at
the start of the season that Montpellier, the 13th budget in Ligue 1, would end up lifting the
trophy for the first time in its history.
Montpellier HSC are the French champions for the very first time in their history. They needed
only to draw away at bottom club Auxerre but managed to secure a 2-1 win, thanks to a brace from
John Utaka and help send their hosts down into Ligue 2 for the first time since they were
promoted back in 1980.

With an annual budget of just £27 million, little Montpellier beat Auxerre to win their first
ever Ligue 1 title on the final day of the French season at the weekend, knocking nouvelle riche
fatcats Paris Saint-Germain back into second spot in the process which meant that, courtesy of a

For anyone writing transfer rumour stories ten years ago, the name of Philippe Mexes used to
crop up with predictable regularity. At that stage in his career, the Frenchman was a precocious
talent who was building a reputation at Auxerre as one of the most promising defenders around.
