People can talk about rebuilding. Even if the point of last summer's transfer strategy was to
avoid long settling-in periods that would lead to 2011-12 becoming a rebuilding season. Even if it
now appears that next season will end up something of a rebuilding season, too, with few
entertaining realistic hopes of a return to Champions League action twelve months hence.

It had been a long time coming and there will be those who believe that there was an air of
inevitability about it, but when the relegation of Doncaster Rovers from the Championship last
weekend, it came with a degree of controversy that only the end of the domestic football season can
bring. The battle for Doncaster last weekend was already an uphill one rooted to the bottom of the
table, they needed to win all of their remaining matches in order to secure a fifth season of
football in England's second division, but a questionable red card and two goals in stoppage time
meant that Portsmouth (who went into the match in an identical situation to them) managed to keep
their season alive for another week while the home side fell through the trapdoor.
The weight of expectation on Chamberlain is bewildering
Considering I often complain about the crowd getting on players' backs, this might seem perverse,
but the cheering for Chamberlain is ridiculous and unhelpful to the other players.
While the game was still going on with Arsenal on the attack, Chamberlain went over to the bench to
get ready to come on.

No matter if it was right or wrong, Jamie Carragher was always going to start against Arsenal on
Saturday. Legend to some, a man who in his prime fuelled dreams of a cloned brood of Carraghers all
straining and screaming as they dragged the club to glory. To others a lately tarnished legacy of
behind the scenes politicking, his local's influence and friends in the press helping him hang on
to a starting role years after he should have joined Sami Hyypia in riding gracefully off into the
sunset as a fondly remembered hero.
If you're looking for a rundown of today's friendlies, we had you covered earlier aside from
late-breaking news that Scott Parker and not Steven Gerrard would be England Captain. But for those
more interested in the latest Liverpool news than watching fearfully through their fingers, worried
that one of Liverpool's players might end the day with an injury they didn't head into it with,
these notes are for you.
Ruud van Gol is the autumn of his career. He has found his final destination, lowered his
ambitions and lives in realism. "I'm nearing the point where football is costing me more than it
yields, in energy terms. If that is the case, I call it quits. I do look [read more]
Let's get this out of the way right at the beginning: Christian Sivebaek sees himself as a wide
midfielder. During our relatively brief conversation, the 6-foot-3, soon-to-be 24-year-old made
that point abundantly clear. Sivebaek said he could play on the right or on the left, but indicated
he's never played as a central midfielder and left little doubt that he felt his skills were being
wasted as a right back.

Premier League set new record as no managers are axed in the autumn
Premier League chairmen are not normally noted for their patience. But they stand to set an
unlikely record by NOT sacking anyone until December at the earliest.

It's that time of year in Britain again when, after enjoying both weeks of summer, autumn is
skipped over completely, winter sets in for the next eight months and Nike roll out their Hi-Vis
matchballs for use across Europe's top leagues this year it's the rather swish Seitiro, which will
make it's Premier League debut this weekend.

Admittedly, there was a time Michael Ballack was a name highly relevant to
football. Now, he has been banished to the 'Has Beens' gallery, led by
Rivaldo in a cape and feather duster.
Happy Halloween from all of us at A Football Report!
What better indication of the very last glimmer of summer departing is there than kids dressing
up as monsters ready to pillage all your sweets when sunset arrives? Nevertheless, the ambiance of
autumn is in full swing and, thankfully, the football never stops.

Newcastle are 100-1 with Hills to remain unbeaten all season. I wouldn't touch that bet even if
the season in question was autumn. Of their nine Premier League matches so far this term, seven
were against teams who this morning are sitting in the bottom half of the table.
It's been a while since I have come across something so hideous – downright hideous
that I might comment, "That's a deeeownright hiiiiideous decision, Mr. Clattenburg!".
But, with the Autumn leaves slowly turning from green to brown, like my children taking their
mother's surname instead of mine, I picked up a copy of The Beach Boys 11th studio album, Pet
Sounds, which made me wonder way on earth I bother getting up in the mornings.

The last few meetings with Sp*rs in the league have not been events to write home about. In a
nutshell, we have epitomised the phrase 'self-destruct' in most of them.
However, whilst I understand a lot of the pundits placing their money on a Spurs win today
because of our poor start to the season and T*ttenham getting a few wins under their belts, they
seem to forget they have done this a fair few times before.
Louis van Gaal is one of the true tactical masterminds of the past two decades, and has managed

September 28 was just any other day for most people, but it was a rather special occasion for
one of the most colourful figures of the footballing world.
One of the chief hazards of being a good attacking full back is inordinate expectation. Take that
hogger of Autumn 2010 column inches, Gareth Bale - so impressive were his performances that Harry
Redknapp thought he'd give him a go further forward - that trio of strikes in the Giuseppe Meazza
had led us to believe that he might somehow be 'wasted' in a mere defensive role and that bendy

Denmark coach Morten Olsen insists they will not take any risk with Liverpool defender Daniel

Agger has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury he picked up in last

The problem is likely to sideline the central defender for up to two months and Olsen says he will
not pick Agger for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Iceland on 6th June.
