The match between Algeria and West Germany in 1982 is perhaps as much remembered for the later
match in the group between West Germany and Austria, one of the most disgracefil matches in world
cup history that effectively left the excellent Algerian team out of the world cup in what smelled
awfully as a fixed match between the two Germanic teams.
Regular readers of this blog know that I'm a big fan of Guus Hiddink. Mainly, because I've always
backed his teams with cold hard cash and until Russia's failure to qualify for World Cup 2010, he
has never let me down.Indeed, I decided against starting at Euro 2008 blog because I was so
confident that England weren't going to qualify because they were in the same group as Hiddink's
Russia and the

Things will be a little light and/or late from me this week, as I head out for a little trip
starting with Wednesday's Europa League final. I will be reporting from Hamburg for MLSsoccer.com,
but Sean has a few things for you in the NSC workshop. And you'll be happy to know that I have
finally received my new computer.
Besian Idrizaj's death has stunned football. The 22-year-old passed away in his sleep on Friday
night at home in Austria. The forward was currently plying his trade for Swansea City and was
regarded as a talented player for the club.
Paulo Sousa, the Swansea City manager, paid tribute to the young player:
"It's sad for all the Swansea family, but more importantly his own close family.

Honduras' stuttering FIFA World Cup build-up continued with a heavy defeat to Romania in Austria.
When Joao Havelange claimed, in 2008, that the 1966 and 1974 World Cups were fixed, his claims
were largely laughed out of court. Depending on who you listened to, he was either deliberately
misconstruing events or demonstrating little more than the first signs of senility. What was,
however, curious about his comments was what he missed out.
Austria banned these for their potential to incite violence. They were just jealous this isn't
allowed as a method of conflict diffusion in government offices.

Austria celebrate their win over the Netherlands...and 3rd place in Group

Fans hoping to see a rematch of the Netherlands-Spain World Cup final played out on a younger
stage will be disappointed to learn that they will have to wait at least another two years for the
senior European Championships in 2012 after the Netherlands were elimated today.
This is both self-explanatory and hard as hell to get right. There's so much extrapolation required
here, I'd feel like a real winner just for getting four from the list in the World Cup 2014 finals
field and maybe a couple reaching the knockouts.Honorable mentions: Costa Rica, Croatia, Hungary,

Spain and France, arguably the most dominant teams in the tournament, met on Friday to determine
the winner of the U19 European Championship. Going into the final, the hosts (France) had been
consistently impressive- beating the Netherlands (4-1) and Austria (5-0) in their first two matches
and then Croatia 2-1 in the semifinals.
These days FIFA release their much derided (but pretty good) World Rankings, and UEFA release
c0-efficients for the rankings of leagues. I thought it'd be interesting to compare these two
rankings to discover the most over-performing leagues and the international sides that
under-perform (or the other way around, whichever way you want to look at it).

Belgium versus Austria was so excellent it deserves after the fact cinema screening across the
globe whilst being served by holographic models wearing nothing but a few pixels, something Japan
is already scheming up for their latest World Cup 2022 techno leak. Double fours in the scoreline
tells part of the story, but three of those goals came in the final ten, with Belgium also hitting
the inside of the post, only for it to squib back in the box, and Jan Vertonghen managing to
confound those with common sense the world over by launching himself into orbit with what can only
be termed "a stiff bump" (you'll notice the 'leg pull' as he's in the air, a technique reserved for
the mantle which also holds the archer's bow).
