My heart is still pounding. I can't believe how disappointed I am.
Here's the only thing I can figure about this game: Austria made a brilliant substitution and
Rongen failed the world with his. The US pressed and pressed and should have finished, but the
clock seemed to pound louder than their hearts and every chance was squandered.
Seitz put in a hero's performance, injured and playing through the rain, but in the end the
conditions proved to much even for him and the Austrians slipped through.
He may have been playing in the shadow of Altidore, Adu, and Szetela for the US in the U20 World
Cup, but slowly and assuredly, Dax McCarty is making a name for himself in the MLS with his current
club, FC Dallas.
Coming from parents who were both talented athletes in their prime, it's really no surprise that
McCarty is so physically-gifted, but what is surprising is the sport in which he chose to
concentrate.
- Fans of Austria's National Football team are so ashamed of the squads recent run of eight
straight losses that they've called for a withdrawal of the side from the 2008 European
Championship, despite the free invite as hosts. More than 4000 people have added their names to a
petition at www.rueckgrat.cc since it was launched a week ago today. The petitioners have made it
clear that they are not blaming players nor coaches of the team, but feel that their participation
in the tournament would be an insult to the sport.

- Adu has stayed surprisingly consistent throughout the tournament. The same applies for this
game.
- Austria look big and slow, perfectly suited for the US' style of play. (See: Adu, Altidore,
Bradley.) The US has the physicality to compete with just about any U-20 side in the world; where
their ability lies is their ability to temper that physicality with speed on the flanks and
creativity in the middle.
Red Bull has not given wings (forgive me) to the football teams it has taken over in recent years
in New York and Wals-Siezenheim, Austria. Let's look at the impact they've had in both places. New
York's MetroStars were a troubled organisation, but their rebranding as Red Bull New York has
hardly had fans beating down [...] SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Red Bull: Fizzing Out in New York

I finally got to see one of the games live: I went to USA v. Austria on Saturday. It was a great
game to watch, too, aside from the fact that it rained the entire time. This is not fun in
an open stadium.
Austria 0-2 Czech Republic
Chile 0-3 Argentina.
Well, that was ugly.
I'm referring mostly to the post-game scenes at the Argentina-Chile match last night. Some of the
Chilean players, understandably not happy about two of their teammates having been sent off,
squared up to the referee, who had to be escorted off the pitch by the police.
USA vs. Austria

The U-20 men continue their run for history this afternoon as they face a defensive Austrian team
in the quarterfinals. Austria has not looked overly strong during the tournament, but they do have
the means to frustrate and confuse an attack. The US is coming off a weak outing against Uruguay
where they had trouble putting connecting passes or clearing the ball.
What a heart breaking loss this was. The Young Americans fell to the Young Austrians in the quarter
finals of U-20 World Cup yesterday, 2-1. It was a great match and a lot of credit has to go to the
Austrians who played their best game of the tournament. Their tenacity led to the winning goal
[...]
Or, more specifically, a lack thereof on the part of both Toms. Thomas Rongen's U-20 side, pegged
back by a scrappy goal against the run of play at the close of the first half after having the
better of the play in the first 45, never managed to adapt to the change made by the Austrian side
coming into the second half and they ultimately paid for it.

USA 1-2 Austria
The US mini-Nats are out of the World Cup after a poor defensive showing against Austria. The US
came out as the better team but once they got their first goal, they seemed to slow down. The same
issue that has haunted the team during the whole tournament resurfaced this afternoon, as their
defense was a mess. Between miscommunication and failure to clear the ball, Austria got a number of
chances they never should have had (both goes were off second chances).
Austrian football is at a bit of a low internationally. Now, considering my own country is unlikely
to make it to the big dance next summer, I'm not one to suggest Austria shouldn't be playing in
Euro 2008, which they're co-hosting with Switzerland. Fortunately, I don't have to, as over 10,000
of their own [...] SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Austrian Fans, Not Keen on Losing in Euro 2008",

A fellow blogger, a fella who runs a site called Starting Eleven, contacted me about doing a
post-hosting swap. That sounded like "Post Toasties" to me and who doesn't like those? So I said,
yeah, what the the hey? He'll be posting my item shortly - and I'll link to that when it's up.

Czech Republic 1-2 Argentina
So Argentina won, as you might have predicted. But although they dominated possession, the teams
were very closely matched, in a replay of their scoreless draw from the group stage. The opening
goal didn't come until the 60th minute, and it was the Czechs who struck first, with Martin Fenin
holding off the defender to swivel and power his shot in at the far post.
