Watch World Cup qualifiers live here.
International press conferences at the best of times tend to be mundane, by the numbers affairs
filled with platitudes by the key figures within the national side. Not much changes when it comes
to conferences prior to World Cup qualifiers, or even the finals itself, but within the words
always lies a common train of thought: There are few, if any greater honours in football than
representing your country at the World Cup.
Australia would be concerned after their 3-1 loss to South Korea. The Socceroos were wobbly, unsure
and overly cautious and made a mockery of their FIFA ranking of 14. Pim Verbeek has much to think
about between now and next year's World Cup in South Africa. On the one ...
Australia's remarkable run of results has come crashing to a halt at the Seoul World Cup Stadium
as Korea downed the Socceroos 3-1 tonight in an International Friendly. With both teams safely
through to the World Cup Finals as top of their Asian qualifying groups, this was a chance for both
managers to test some new players, and Aussie coach Pim Verbeek rang in the changes in what was a
homecoming for him, as he coached South Korea before taking the Australian job.
You got the impression that the South Korean players enjoyed scoring against their goalkeeper in
training a little too much. The novelty of having coach Huh Jung-moo in between the sticks
outweighed the verbal volleys that came the way of the ten men on the outfield.
Huh was gloved up because the national team was preparing for a friendly with Australia that
kicked-off three days later with no goalkeepers.
Australia submitted their first away defeat in over a year with a 3-1 loss to South Korea at the
Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday night. The two teams that topped their respective pools in
the Asian leg of next year's World Cup were such a contrast to each other; Korea on the back of
an unbeaten run .
This Sunday, Ghana became the first African nation to get a ticket for South Africa. The
qualification came after a 2-0 victory over Sudan with goals by Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien.
The other nations already in the cup are Brazil, Holland, Australia, South Korea, North Korea,
Japan and the hosts South Africa.
The World Cup of 2010 is already taking shape, with seven of the 32 teams on offer having already
staked a claim towards a tournament berth.
In trouble...
The teams who have already qualified:

Japan (AFC)

South Korea (AFC)
Netherlands (UEFA)
North Korea (AFC)
Brazil (CONMEBOL)

So, that leaves space for 24 more countries.

Big Story
It's an absurdly hyperbolic headline from the Roar, but their
story of surveillance of fans is a little concerning, especially in the context of the long failure
of the Australian football authorities to understand that heavy-handed restrictions and
knuckle-headed security is not the way to grow the sport in a country with far more established
sporting cultures.
While most teams were busy with 2010 World Cup Qualification on Saturday, there were a few
friendlies as well. Most noticably were South Korea v Australia and Netherlands v Japan. Here's a
recap of the both matches along with video highlights.

How does one go about measuring greatness in football? I mean real, obvious, blatant greatness;
that rarest of qualities. Today "greatness" is such a woolly, over-used term that sometimes we lose
its meaning and start labeling all sorts of mundane, workaday things as "great". The evolution of
language has distilled its meaning, reduced its potency, but we still know greatness when we see
it.
With Benny Dollo now installed as Technical Director with Persija and his contract with the
Indonesian FA set to expire at the end of January 2010 thoughts turn to who will succeed him. And
there will be a succession even though no one has discussed it openly yet.
The favourite is Rahmad Darmawan, the hugely successful Sriwijaya coach.
Round 5 Review
Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets 1-1
Etihad Stadium 15,168
Despite being able to sustain a high crowd, Melbourne weren't able to replicate that luck on the
pitch, following another disappointing result, the defending champions sit 7th on the A-League
ladder.
Lots of good stuff:
- Messi to sign a mega-deal with Barca.
- United give new deal to Park Ji-Sung.
- Ribery hints to new Bayern deal.
- Juve may keep Trezeguet too.
- Viduka back to Australia?
- Milan to axe Ronaldinho?
- Adriano back to Europe?
PERTH Glory have a pretty quick turnaround of five days until Friday's match against Newcastle
Jets.
But before we get into it, FP just wants to rant about something (don't worry he'll make his point
quickly).
Football in this country is not suffering because of the big things. We have pretty decent players,
a pretty good supporter base (though they are a bit afraid of the rain) and the competition,
especially this year, is extremely tight.
FIFA has today released its monthly World Teams Rankings withBrazil on top & SPAIN 2ºnd closing

Still not much good stuff:
- Figo to Australia?
- New Marseilles deal for French 'keeper.
- Spanish team forced to transfer player.
- An academy kid is signed by FC Dallas.
- Future decision (MLS?) for a U.S. U-20 player.
- Transfer ban placed on Crystal Palace.

Around this time last year Canberra girl Grace Gill was an ACTAS players who still hoped of getting
to the Matildas again (she had been thereabouts before, made the Young Matildas squad for a World
Cup but didn't play and only had one Matildas cap), but no real way of getting there.
Fast-forward to this week and in the last 12-months, Gill would have claimed her second Matildas if
not for ill-timed ankle injuries and she has been in every senior Matildas camp since the W-League
finished.
Overnight Al Ain claimed their third UFL Super Cup in what turned out to be an entertaining night

Not everyone is happy with the A-League right now. Attendances are down on last season, with
average crowds of around 6,200. Football Federation boss Ben Buckley has tried to put a positive
spin on those numbers, by (somewhat bizarrely) claiming it was all part of the plan: "If you look
at the crowd numbers overall they [.
