As disappointing as the end result was, especially after a cracking first half that saw
Liverpool take the game to Sunderland, there were still positives to take away from Saturday's
opening day draw at Anfield. Luis Suarez may have quite obviously tired in the second half, but it
was his first game back and from a fitness standpoint served the same purpose as the early
preseason games in China did for most of the squad, and before he did run out of gas he showed the
same deadly form that he brought to Liverpool throughout the second half of last season and to
Uruguay when he was named player of the tournament for leading his country to Copa America
glory.
Incredible. I literally don't even know what to say.
Arsenal started brightly, and Diaby had a very good header opportunity that he did well to get
onto that he put just wide within the first 5 minutes. Theo had a very good shot from long-range
Reina always had it covered, but it swerved enough to force him to parry instead of hold, and it
really could have caused problems had it been parried in a different direction or someone from
Arsenal been crashing the box to clean up the spoils.
Liverpool field strong lineup for their final preseason match today vs Valencia.
Liverpool Lineup: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Adam, Henderson, Spearing,
Aquilani, Downing, Carroll.
Subs: Jones, Doni, Cole, Maxi, Kyrgiakos, Kuyt, Lucas, Ngog, Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson.
This is what Hicks and Gillett did to Liverpool's playing squad.
Yes, Benitez had a Redknappian fondness for wheeling and dealing – and had to rebuild right away
despite winning the Champions League in his first season – but an awful lot of that business was
compelled by the tumors' poverty and indebtedness, evident in the number of transfers in the last
two to three seasons.
As much as I hate my birthday (and have since I turned 21), I'm actually publicly acknowledging it
this year for some reason. A moment of weakness, most likely.
So, with a lack of content worth scribbling about – at least until tomorrow's first friendly
against Guangzhou (8am on FSC in the US) – I thought I'd post a self-indulgent infographic
showing my age relative to Liverpool's squad from the season before.
Liverpool FC remains in the hunt for a left-back but Lyon's Aly Cissokho is unlikely to be filling
the void at Anfield.
The Reds have been linked with a £9million move for the 23- year-old France international.
However, reports in his homeland that a deal is imminent are wide of the mark and Liverpool are
considering other options.
New Fulham signing John Arne Riise has expressed disappointment that Liverpool did not press harder
to sign him before he made the move to Craven Cottage.
Kenny Dalglish is thought to be in the market for a left-back following the sale of Paul Konchesky
to Leicester, with Aly Cissokho of Lyon heavily linked to Anfield.
The Liverpool line-up for the home friendly against Valencia on August 6th has been confirmed as
follows:
Starting 11:
Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Spearing, Henderson, Adam, Downing, Aquilani,
Carroll.
Subs:
Doni, Cole, Maxi, Kyrgiakos, Kuyt, Lucas, Ngog, Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson.
From the official site:
Liverpool FC confirmed today that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer
of José Enrique.
The club have now been given permission to discuss personal terms with the player, who will
travel to Liverpool to undergo a medical.
Paul Konchesky is determined to win Liverpool fans over after admitting how difficult it is to
shrug off the criticism in the city.
Roy Hodgson signed the left-back over the summer for a substantial fee from former club Fulham, but
the player has failed to live up to the hefty price-tag, and has come under fire from sections of
the Anfield faithful for sub-standard displays, which resulted in the home fans cheering his
departure from the pitch in the defeat to Wolves.
Liverpool's tactical chess against Stoke, well-analyzed by Noel from Liverpool Offside, worked a
treat yesterday. Best described as a 3-4-2-1, it was interesting to see the roles played by each in
the new formation.
What caught my eye in the chalkboards was how roles overlapped and fit together, increasing the
side's overall cohesion.
Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool impress again in a 1-0 win over Chelsea.
From Kenny Dalglish's midweek presser, in which he was asked about the impact of Fernando
Torres' departure:
"The most important people are the people at this football club. We'll just play against any
player they put on the pitch.
Contract negotiations between Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock and manager Gerard Houllier have
broken down according to the Daily Mail.
Warnock has been frozen out at Villa Park since the arrival of Houllier, and the 29-year-old left
back looks set to leave in the summer.
The news will have alerted the attention of potential suitors Liverpool who were heavily linked
with a move for the former Reds trainee in the January transfer window.
Liverpool left-back Fabio Aurelio believes midfielder Lucas Leiva has matured into a top-class
midfielder.
Lucas joined Liverpool in 2007 but a series of below-par appearances in his first two seasons did
little to convince the Anfield faithful.
However, the 24-year-old has started 68 games for Liverpool in the subsequent two seasons, and he
was named Liverpool's best player during the 2010-11 Premiership season by members of the club's
official website, taking 40 per cent of all votes.
So dismayed by the announcement of Serie A's schedule and the injustices suffered by his beloved
Napoli, their sultan, Aurelio De Laurentiis, a man who knows a dramatic exit, stormed out of the
proceedings with some ludicrous accusations involving a teenager and a scooter. Words were uttered:
"There are about five people in football I'd believe this last paragraph to be true about he's one
of them.

Impressive and improving.
The season's almost here, and it's time for every Liverpool fan to talk of how, if things fall
just right, this could be the year. Like Fabio Aurelio's bones and muscles and tendons and
ligaments, hoping for everything to turn out perfectly is probably asking just a bit too much.
Still, it's a new season, the mood is upbeat, and if there was ever a time to give in and embrace
overly ambitious hopes and dreams then this is that time.
Newcastle's José Enrique set for Liverpool move after clubs agree fee
• Full-back to undergo medical ahead of £6m transfer • 25-year-old signed for Newcastle in
August 2007 The Newcastle full-back José Enrique is expected to undergo a medical at Liverpool
after the two clubs agreed a fee believed to be close to £6m.
A terrific first half followed by a disjointed and disappointing second half, and ultimately a
performance all too familiar. Pass and move football gave way to static and sloppy play down the
stretch, with Sunderland clearly the better side as the match came to a close. Not a reason to
completely erase all the optimism that accompanies the beginning of the season, but it's clear that
there's some work left to be done.
New Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique was satisfied with his debut performance on Saturday and is
not discouraged by the team's winless start.
The Spaniard was thrown in at the deep end, starting the Reds' 1-1 draw with Sunderland after
taking part in just one training session with his new team-mates after completing his move on
Friday.

As the Liverpool players were booed off the pitch on Wednesday night after a woeful display
against Wolves resulting in defeat, it was the name of "Dalglish" that resounded from the stands,
a cry for help from the Anfield idol.
Today the players take to the pitch once more against Bolton, the King having spoken, the
clubs current ambassador and head of football development asking for unity within the club.

The ankle injury which saw Meireles removed from Saturday's match in the 20th minute rules him out
of Wednesday's match at Blackburn.
Fabio Aurelio has backed Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson and claimed that the whole team are behind
him to succeed.
The Reds boss has endured a difficult time in charge since taking over six months ago, seeing
boardroom tussles, poor results and performances on the pitch and a lack of popularity with the
fans going against him.
Long live the King
Liverpool fans are often claimed to be some of the most rational and intelligent in the world.
They hardly ever turn on a manager (and Hodgson very nearly turned on them first) and they know the
difference between a bad team and a team that is being badly managed.
A queue is beginning to form in the pursuit of three Liverpool players who are seemingly surplus to
requirements by the Anfield side. Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli are apparently willing to
listen to offers for winger Ryan Babel, full backs Paul Konchesky and Emiliano Insua who are wanted
by Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Valencia respectively.
The Liverpool FC line up for the away trip to Wolves in the Premier League fixture on Saturday

20 year old Italian international Davide Santon is considered by many to be one of the hottest
prospects in Italian football but his chances of getting first team football at the San Siro are
severely hampered by the fact that veterans Christian Chivu and Maicon have something of a monopoly
over their respective sides of the back four which has left much speculation that the talented
youngster will be on his way and the player's agent has stated in the past that a move to the
Premier League would interest his client.

Liverpool's lineup prompted a barrage of pre-match questions. Seeing three central defenders, three
full-backs, three central midfielders, and one striker-turned-right winger left many questioning
exactly what formation Liverpool would use.

Will Liverpool stick with three at the back?
Liverpool's ambitions of staging a late charge for Champions League qualification suffered an
untimely blow as bogey side Wigan ended their four-match winning run in a draw at Anfield.
A fifth successive victory would have put the Reds within four points of fourth-placed Chelsea but
despite dominating two-thirds of the game they failed to press home their advantage.

When even Ray Hudson's most notable moment comes right off the top when he laments that Dani
Pacheco isn't the starting lineup before going on to say that N'Gog who he appears to think plays
in Pacheco's most likely position will need to go out and prove himself, you know you're in for a
match lacking in chameleon eyes and the soaring superhuman goals of a winged pegasus.
Liverpool is reportedly ready to join Manchester United in pursuit of Celtic defender Emilio
Izaguirre.
It was initially reported by the Mirror that the Barclays Premier League leaders had been
monitoring the Honduran and now it appears their great North West rivals are also keeping tabs on
the 24-year-old.
