After a freak pre-season incident in which Fabio Aurelio was injured whilst having a back-yard
kickabout with his son (!), Liverpool fans were looking forward to the Brazilian's return to
action. Unfortunately, Aurelio's comeback is on hold yet again after another freak injury sustained
at Liverpool's Melwood training ground today.
Tonights Liverpool team to face Leeds United: Cavalieri, Degen, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Dossena,
Aurelio, Spearing, Mascherano, Riera, Babel, Ngog. Subs: Reina, Gerrard, Torres, Skrtel, Voronin,
Plessis, Johnson.
Veteran legend still has a season in the tank.
With Fabio Aurelio still out injured and Emiliano Insua a little raw for a long sting in the
first team and the jury well and truly still out on Andrea Dossena, would a move for Roberto Carlos
be a wise one?
Yes he's 36 but he is super fit and has a wealth of experience and is available, perhaps most
crucially given the financial state we are in, for free.
Premier League Team News - Barclays Premier League - ESPN SoccernetNo certainty of O'Hara playing
for Pompey - I like the thought of him as a cheap option but I'm not willing to go too far out on a
limb until I know how (and if) they intend to deploy him regularly. More a BD option than
something for this week if you ask me (and you sort of did by being here to read this column).
As I predicted yesterday, Xavier Masherano is out injured and does not make the squad.Steven
Gerrard goes back into central midfield alongside Lucas.Benayoun plays behind Torres upfront with
Riera wide on the left.Aurelio doesn't even make the bench.Team in

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is anticipating that January's African Cup of Nations could have a
decisive influence in this season's Premier League title race, with the likes of Manchester City,
Arsenal and Chelsea losing vital players to the three-week tournament, at a time of year when key
points can be collected for the top sides.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is delighted with the progress that his injured players have made
in order to regain full fitness.
The Reds boss began by explaining that Fabio Aurelio will be back by the time the club host Burnley
at Anfield on September 12.
"Fabio is back training and playing football," Benitez is quoted by The Liverpool Daily Post as
saying.
There's no real surprises here, but it's interesting to note that Kelly got the nod over Degen for
the group stages. Aside from that, it's business as usual and there's just 10 days left before we
start our campaign.
Goalkeepers - Reina, Cavalieri, Martin
Defenders - Johnson, Agger, Insua, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Kyrgiakos, Darby, Kelly, Dossena
Midfielders - Aquilani, Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Riera, Benayoun, Babel, Spearing, Plessis
Forwards - Torres, Kuyt, Voronin, NGog, Amoo, Eccleston
Rafa has little choice but to omit these two.
Much has been made of how injury prone Philipp Degen is costing us x amount per game played but
that is probably more than a little misleading as by that rationale Alberto Aquilani is probably
costing us a small fortune but you can little about whether a player just happens to be perennially
sidelined but one does wonder if the Swiss full back will ever play another game for the club and
his omission from the Champions League squad must not have come as a surprise to anyone.
Liverpool's assistant manager has spoken out in praise of full-back Glen Johnson, and believes the
England international has made a great start to his Anfield career after his summer switch from
Portsmouth.
The 25-year-old has bagged two goals in four games so far for the Reds and, despite some observers
expressing reservations about the former Chelsea man's defensive capabilities, Lee thinks that he
has definitely improved Rafa Benitez's team.
Bad news Liverpool fans, Javier Mascherano is out of the game at home to Burnley tomorrow. The
Argentina skipper suffered a knock away on International duty mid-week and is ruled out of
Saturday's game.Rafa Benitez now has a major problem in midfield without a recognised
holding/defensive player.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed he will not take any risks with Daniel Agger's
fitness.
Agger is close to returning to action after undergoing a minor back operation last month.
The Dane has yet to feature this season due to the problem, but Benitez believes the classy central
defender could be back in action next week.
Good news from Anfield as summer signing Alberto Aquilani has begun running after his protracted
ankle problem finally seems to have been cleared up, lets hope he is soon fit for first-team as I
am dying to get a look at the play maker bought to try to replace the Great Xabi Alonso. That's for
another day as we face Hull at Anfield today where we will be looking for a good win to avenge last
season's 2-2 draw in the same fixture when Stevie Gerrrard brought us back from the dead with two
fine goals after Hull had gone two up after a McShane header and a Carra own goal had left us
scratching our heads at half-time.
..from taking corners and (some) free kicks for Liverpool. Why Rafa Benitez allows one of
Liverpool's key match-winners to continue taking them is beyond me, especially since Gerrard is
often very effective at getting on the end of balls into the box.
Gerrard is a fantastic player but let's be honest, his corners are not the greatest.
Fabio Aurelio admits he faces a fight to dislodge Emiliano Insua from the Liverpool left-back
slot.
Aurelio has recovered from the knee injury that required an operation during the summer and ruined
his pre-season preparations.
The Brazilian is now back to full fitness and is hopeful of being included in the squad for
Saturday's visit of promoted Burnley.
Dirk Kuyt's 12th goal in 35 Champions League games for Liverpool saw the Anfield men claim an
opening Group E victory but there was nothing to suggest a Madrid final in May is on the cards.
The Dutchman is now Liverpool's third-highest scorer in this competition and they were more than
thankful for his eventual winner in the final seconds of the first half.
Before yesterday I knew about as much about Debreceni VSC as I know about the Faint Object
Spectograph on the Hubble Telescope. They are among the "new kids" in the Champions League and not
knowing anything about their club (or their league) forced me to underestimate them greatly. I
assumed this would be an easy win for Liverpool.

West Ham's new Mexico striker Guillermo Franco only signed on Thursday and is unlikely
to feature.
Alessandro Diamanti may make his full debut, while Kieron Dyer (hamstring) returns along with
Herita Ilunga whose cheekbone injury has healed.

Javier Mascherano has been dropped to the bench in favour of Lucas Leiva in a surprising move by
Rafa Benitez.
He partners Stevie G in midfield with Benayoun playing just behind Torres upfront.

Decisively and deservedly beaten. Out-Europed in Europe. Liverpool never got in gear and Fiorentina
were fantastic, besting Liverpool at its own game in the first half and smothering the life out of
them in the second.
Mauricio Pellegrino has backed Emiliano Insua to achieve his dream of being called up by the
Argentinean national team.
After breaking into the Liverpool first-team last season, the 20-year-old left-back has started all
four of the Reds' matches so far this term.
Pellegrino has been delighted by the form of his compatriot - and believes there is much more to
come.
The Carling Cup may lie a distant fourth in Liverpool's list of priorities but as far as Fabio
Aurelio is concerned all that glitters is gold.
The Brazilian is set to make his first start of the season when the Reds face Leeds United in a
mouth-watering third-round clash at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
This was always going to be a tricky game, one from which Liverpool had everything to lose whilst
Leeds United, doing so well in League One, were going to be determined to do well in front of their
own fans. For Benitez, the headache was going to be who to play: on the one hand there was the
calls to put in some of the younger players but on the other there was the fear of being shown up
by Leeds with the hammering that would undoubtedly follow.

His move to Napoli collapsed during the summer, but Liverpool's Andrea Dossena is set
for another round of talks.
The full-back was on the verge of making the transfer to the Stadio San Paolo when the club baulked
at the £10m price-tag.

of Hull at the weekend.
