*Given that I've spent much of the season gazing from the Home Depot Center press box at plenty of empty seats during Galaxy games even though they have topped the league, I've been curious to know what other teams are doing during this weak economy to bolster their attendance.

The regular season is over, and the second year of Women's Professional Soccer saw a 23% drop in overall average league attendance. Only the Boston Breakers were able to improve on their average from year one, going from 4,183 per game to a league-leading 4,490. The league average went from 4,684 to 3,588, a drop of more than a thousand per game.

Women's Professional Soccer held its final Sunday. Now we all sit around and wonder if the league will play another game.

I'm on the record very clearly on WPS: I hope the league makes it ... but I've said all along that it's going to be a mighty struggle.

It certainly has been so far, with two clubs folding over the last few months, a dreadfully bad sign.

The Fire have announced a series of unique incentives for becoming a 2011 season ticket holder including free parking, discounted merchandise and concessions, a 12 month payment plan, and even some price reductions. You can read the the details here.

The plan is a pretty impressive attempt to increase the season ticket holder base considering the economic climate and the fact that other professional sports operations in Chicago are considering increasing ticket prices while attendance begins to falter and the product continues to be abysmal (I'm looking at you Ricketts and McCaskey).

For the first time since the folding of the St. Louis Ahletica, Women's Professional Soccer went a week without any mid-week games, so only 3 were played on Week 20. The first match-up was not really a match up if you only look at the score. FC Gold Pride earned the biggest win of the year (and in both seasons of WPS) against the Atlanta Beat with a final score of 6-1.

Bolton @ Arsenal 9/11/10 Stu Holden was understandably excited heading into the match with Arsenal, however after the match I don't believe Stu would say it was an enjoyable afternoon. Holden started and played all 90 minutes for the Trotters, however the 3 fouls he took were not enough as they fell 4-1 at Emirates Stadium with nearly 60,000 in attendance.
