Attendance for Sounders' games at Qwest Field is up more than 18 percent over last year's pace, leading a league-wide attendance bump of 13.6 percent over last year.

While America had what is surely a solid run in South Africa, they have, as we all know, long since been knocked out. Yet, while the tournament still rages on in preparation for Sunday's final, Americans are showing a newfound interest in the sport; one that is not entirely built around the hype of a world event but reflects a deeper enjoyment of the game.

After being rocked by a 25-point deduction for going into administration, Dundee FC have decided to use WAG Power in a bid to raise much-needed funds. The Scottish Sun takes up the story:

"WAGs from crisis-hit Dundee have posed in sexy underwear to raise cash for the ailing club.

Currently there are 53 countries affiliated to UEFA. These are countries who are allowed to play in tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and of course the European Championships. But there are only 52 which actually have a league of their own as Liechtenstein do not organise a league, preferring to play in the Swiss leagues.

Being a Sounders fan, it's easy to be lulled into the belief that soccer in general, and MLS in particular, are about the hottest thing in American sports.

We see posters all over town. It seems like every other business has a schedule posted in its window. There are many bars in town where you can simply assume soccer will be playing on the big screen.

When I arrived at soccer practice to find my coach, a Columbian, wearing a light blue Tampa Bay Mutiny jersey, I was surprised. Here was a man who couldn't care less about MLS, especially one of its teams which no longer exists. Yet, it all made sense after he gave me this explanation.

"They had that Columbian dude"
(The Columbian dude in question is, of course, Carlos Valderamma) Living in the New York area and seeing the tens of thousands of spectators at international friendlies between Latinamerican teams is a constant reminder of the fanbase MLS is missing out on.

On paper 4 matches on a Wednesday night doesn't seem like the best idea. Yet somehow almost everyone but the losing teams had something go right last night. D.C. United finally collected a few points. FC Dallas won it's first match of the year. Danny Allsopp went hard, scoring the first-ever MLS goals for the only place on the planet that is an island, a continent and a nation.

Major League Soccer continues to grow as a major professional sports entity here in the United States, and if you don't believe me, the truth is in the attendance figures.
Average attendance for the 2010 regular season, with Seattle on top for the second straight season, was the highest since 2007 and the third highest in league history.

Now that Toronto has become the last MLS team to have its home opener, here's a look at where each team stands, attendance-wise, in the early going:

If I told you Rino Gattuso opened a shop near Milan and asked you to guess what kind of shop it is, the smart guess would be one that sells various weapons, torture devices, and rabies medication.

Intriguing. The Colorado Rapids are set to unveil a "major player transaction" at Denver South High School tomorrow afternoon. The main thing that goes through my mind is that they are trading Conor Casey, a South High School graduate, to a major European club. But why would it be a picture opportunity if they are trading him?

Through five weeks of the 2010 Major League Soccer season, average announced attendance is up by just over 15%, thanks in part to a new stadium in New York, a slightly enlarged capacity in Seattle, and...well, it being early still.

This table ranks the 16 teams by their percentage change in average announced attendance through the same number of dates as a year ago (Philadelphia did not play last year).

Only two pro teams (Tampa Bay in USSFD2 and Atlanta in WPS) haven't played a home game yet this season. So here's a look at attendance figures for all the teams at the professional levels to this point, just for fun.

At the height of his notoriety, George Best once had similar restriction placed upon him.

Mexican legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco is open to the idea of returning to Major League Soccer following the World Cup, according to his representative, Jose Manuel Sanz. Blanco returned to Mexico this past offseason, signing with second-division side Veracruz after spending nearly three years as a Designated Player with the Chicago Fire.

Major League Soccer will be back from its group stage break this weekend, but the other outdoor leagues have continued their seasons unabated (with drops in attendance, more on that later). Here's a look at each league's attendance figures through games of June 20. These are unofficial and incomplete (because many lower-level teams can't be buggered, apparently) numbers based on boxscores, so take them for what they're worth.

Midweek soccer is still a tough sell in America. Even in markets where the local side is well-supported, it's often difficult to fill stadiums on a Wednesday or Thursday night; for a myriad of reasons, Americans just don't do weeknights in large numbers (save one or two exceptions).
Which made last night's two league matches heartening, in a way.

My calendar says August 12th, which means that the MLS transfer window for attached players ends in just a few days. Considering the rather busy summer we've had for MLS signings, it would hardly be a surprise if all of the big splash moves have been consummated and the window will close without another name player joining MLS.
