To say that this season was one of the best in the MLS may be a slight understatement considering
that it isn't even over yet. But in terms of regular season, it could be labeled as one of the best
since it's very first back in 1996. Partly the reason is the attendance is on the [...]
Since we often talk about MLS's attendance numbers, I found this story very interesting. On
Wednesday night, the Major League Baseball's Florida Marlins played the Washington Nations in front
of less then 400 fans. That same night a 3A high school soccer game saw 400 fans attend. So for at
least one night, a MLB team was outdrawn by high school soccer.
The 2007 regular season is over and the attendance numbers look good. The league average for the
year is 16,485 per game, which is a significant jump from 2006's 15,518 and 2005's 15,108.
Actually, 2007 represents the best average since the inaugural run in 1996.

Last week, we posted a pretty positive note about the rising overall attendance in MLS: and it has
ended up being an excellent year overall. With the final numbers in, it's worth mentioning a few
negatives as well, with regard to four of the teams that made the playoffs.

To stray a bit from my regular topic, I need to talk USL-1 for a second - specifically about my
local team, the Portland Timbers. But, first, a little background. Not too long ago, I was a
season-ticket holder. When circumstances got in the way, my attendance record took a bit of a hit,

The season is quickly coming to a close and even though there was not a lot of movement in the
standings, week 26 showed a lot of interesting possibilities. On a whole, the league continued to
increase their average attendance per game numbers thanks in large part to the 33,000 at KC on
Thursday and the 27,000 that turned out for Chivas on Saturday.
Since it has been about six weeks since I last looked at the attendance numbers for the league, I
thought it was about time to do so. So far 1,748,856 fans have attended matches this season for an
average of 14,947 per game. Here is how the numbers break down by team:

The regular season is over, the playoffs are about to begin. But first I wanted to go back to
something I started last year, and that's posting the average attendance of the league.
Overall this year, MLS' average attendance was 16670, the highest average attendance for the league
since the inaugural season back in 1996, when the league averaged 17406.
Week 20 was a fun one for MLS action as just about every game had some bit of entertainment. Also,
an interesting trend seems to be going on in league play as 6 of this week's 7 games saw a team
shutout to bring August's total for shutouts to 14 out of 16 making it the month with the most
shutouts by percentage (87.5%) since April (July 17 of 28 (60.

** I cannot locate the attendance numbers for Colorado-Columbus (2 Sept) or LA-Columbus (30 Sept)
so the season average is for only 185 games.
This weekend saw some fun matches as Houston and New England turned in a full ride while Colorado
actually found some offense to give Eddie Johnson and the Wizards a difficult night. Columbus might
not have had a hard time with Toronto but it was still a good game to watch. Yet very few people
did watch these matches as the league some of their worst attendance numbers of the season.
The weekend is over and the six matches have made the playoff picture a lot clearer. It is safe to
say that, failing a run like none in league history, LA and Real Salt Lake are out of the picture
and Toronto is all but on that list as well. That means that Chicago, Columbus and Colorado, or the
triple C's, are the teams fighting for that final playoff spot.
Week 25 saw a number of ties but also some great goals. DC's Jaime Moreno, LA's Chris Klein and
NE's Taylor Twellman had some of the best, but by no means the only good net finders on the week.
Also, something that the league can take a great deal of pride in, for the third week in a row,
average attendance has increased. It is not a huge jump, but seeing how MLS has a history of seeing
numbers drop as the season comes to a close, this is a wonderful change.
Another week is over and what do we see but DC on top of the East and Chivas making the run for the
West while the league seems to have gone goal happy. Four of the seven games saw four or more goals
including a seven-goal outing in Houston.
The playoff race seems all but officially be a race for the final spot, although KC is not in the
clear just yet.
Another week of the year over and done. Sadly, I didn't do a full post on the weekend's games, so I
will rap all that into these ratings. One thing I must bring up though, isn't it interesting how
many favorable calls LA got during the Houston match? When you combine that with all the red cards
their opposition has got in the previous few weeks, one has to wonder why luck is smiling so much
on the Galaxy.
The 2007 regular season has ended on much the same note as it began, and that's not a great thing.
Most of the games over the weekend didn't really have much of a punch to them. There was still some
good action to watch, but overall, not the type of weekend that this season deserves as a cap
off.
Anyway, here are the league numbers for the full 195 game season:SeasonWeek

The busiest week of the MLS calendar is over and what do we have? The Eastern conference is in
gridlock as five of the seven teams are within 2 points of first place while the West seems to be
the domain of Texas. This bunching up in the East should make for a very interesting second half of
the season as anyone could end up anywhere. In the West the question at this point seems to be who
will put together a show that's just good enough to limp into the third place spot.
The MLS season is now halfway over and the week that brought us to this point also brought us some
history as Steve Ralston (NE Revolution) became the all-time assist leader in MLS with 115 while
Houston smashed the consecutive shutout minutes against Toronto. In the East, the seesaw action
continued as New England and KC are up while New York and Columbus are down.
Maybe it was the heat or maybe the league was a little down from the lack of Beckham playing time,
but whatever it was, it sure did keep the goals on the light end. The good news, even with so few
goals, a number of these matches were still entertaining. Plus, anytime you see the both conference
leaders beat, well there is some joy in that.

Tickle
- Jaime finally nets #109. Appropriately it's on a penalty. Hopefully we don't have to wait to
few months more (or for the next pen, whichever comes first) for #110.
- Deep and dangerous. That's what Liverpool are looking. They ran out the B team against Toulouse
in the Champions' League qualifier and thumped the French side 4-0.
Sadly, I don't have the time for a full recap so I'll just post the numbers for the week.

DC United and the Houston Dynamo clinched their spots in the post season this week, but the most
interesting part of the picture is what is happening in terms of the eighth spot. Chicago, Columbus
and Colorado all entered the weekend within a point of the final spot and not much changed. Chicago
fought back down a man to take a point, the Rapids pulled one of the biggest surprises of the
season by earning a point against Chivas while the Crew's run of 'luck' continued when they lost
late to KC.
The attendance for Ipswich Town's impressive victory over Coventry was just
18,840, the lowest since March 2000 - when the stadium had a vastly smaller capacity.
As a season ticket holder, my pet peeve was the 'part-timers' that graced us with their presence
for Town's bigger matches.
Without a doubt, leg 2 of round 1 was a lot more fun then leg 1. However, after both number one
seeds were knocked out by the bottom seeds, one has to wonder if the league needs to take some sort
of action to give the teams that proved themselves during the whole season an advantage in the
playoffs. But that is a discussion for another day.

The 2007 season might only be three weeks past, but it is time to look forward to 2008. MLS

is the full schedule:

Toronto at Columbus
Chicago at Salt Lake
DC at KC
NY-San Jose (match might change)
