Almost every team in Major League Soccer, the United Soccer League and the North American Soccer League has played at least one home game1, so let's take a look at how each of our three pro men's leagues are doing at the turnstiles2. First, the numbers for MLS, the USL and the NASL and then, after the jump, a few notes.

The Major Arena Soccer League's third season1 ended Sunday and, thanks in part to losing some dead weight, average announced attendance was up about 17 percent from a year ago.

It's probably not quite that much, because we're missing six data points, five of which are from teams that don't draw particularly well.

After four straight years of average announced attendance growth, the second-division North American Soccer League took a step back at the gate this season, part of an overall challenging year that has put the league's immediate future into some question.

Perhaps more important than losing 1,177 fans per game through the turnstiles in its sixth season, the NASL has already lost two solid franchises as the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Ottawa Fury have jumped to the third-division United Soccer League.

Major League Soccer's twenty-first season looked a lot like its twentieth, at least at the turnstiles. The league did set a(nother) new record for total attendance at 7,375,285, but its average crowd of 21,692 was less than one percent higher than 2015's mark of 21,5741

This is not a real surprise, actually.

Overall, the league showed a tiny 2.1 percent increase in average announced attendance from 2015 to 20161, even though 13 of the 23 returning teams actually saw average attendance decreases year-to-year.

Now that the US Women's National Team has won its third World Cup, the big question is whether or not the euphoria over the USA's first championship since 1999 will carry over and result in increased interest in the women's club game on these shores. As you may recall, the Women's United Soccer Association was born out of the glow from the 1999 Women's World Cup here in the States, but the WUSA only lasted three years (folding on the eve of the hastily relocated 2003 Women's World Cup).
