Why So Many Empty Seats For Cup Competitions?

0
Coventry City hasn't been in the Premiership since the 2000-2001 season, when they were relegated after finishing 19th with 34 points. The Sky Blues have spent every season since then in the Championship, so close to England's top flight, but yet so far. They're a proud club — they've been in existence since the [. English Premier League Map

0
Yes it's that time of year, the start of the 2008-09 English Premier League. In his usual fashion Bill Turianski gives us a visual overview of what we'll be seeing - a map of England overlaid with the 20 club logos sized proportional to attendance and located according to, well, their location. A list of each club's average attendance last season is also included plus some visual profiles of each club on the right hand side - kit, logo, last season's finish, titles and much more. What a strange weekend

0
Ilkka Mäkelä had hoped for 5-6,000, but in the end the attendance for Jari Litmanen's return was 4,163. Seasoned football-watchers were unsurprised about that, given the history of football in Lahti. One told me that "hardly anybody in Lahti supports FC Lahti. The real clubs there are Kuusysi and Reipas. Click to continue reading...

In a match seen as the rehersal for the upcoming Singapore Cup semi-final, Woodlands Wellington drew 0-0 with Young Lions at the Woodlands Stadium. If you weren't in attendance for the Red Bulls-Barcelona match on Wednesday I've got a little something to show you. And if you were there but you spent half-time trying to get a beer, get to the bathroom and get the digits of one of those scandalous little Red Bull Girls, you might want to see this as well. The End of an Era (For Now or Forever?)

3
It's over. Dunzo. Outta here like last year. And to put it in the most eloquent way I can think of...it totally sucks. The oldest existent soccer rivalry in the country has gone the way of the dodo and even though I'm not a supporter of either club --at least not officially, but I do have my preferences-- I have to say I'm kinda bummed for a few different reasons. 90 Minutes of Old Time Soccer Glory

2
What? You thought I forgot there was a little three decade-long grudge match tonight? Blogger please. I will not rest until I get a call from FSC's Mitch Peacock himself saying "you can stop now, we really don't have the bandwidth for an audience this size." Until then, I'm going to keep reminding you to do whatever you have to do to watch the game on FSC at 11pmEST. Click to continue reading...

U.S. Women Lose Olympic Opener & More

2

The biggest surprise in this game might be that Lawndale's Kei Kamara actually found the net for Houston. The second biggest surprise: so did Houston's Nate Jaqua, the former goal-averse Galaxy forward.

The attendance without any Mexican teams involved in the final: just 9,232

*From the (edited) Galaxy press release:

reserve goalkeeper Charles Alamo and midfielder Michael Gavin each suffered serious injuries in Sunday night's reserve game in San Jose (a 1-0 loss) and will miss extended periods of time.

Colorado 2-1 Everton; Slipping in the West

2

The Toffees pulled of a win in the 87th beating the Rapids on Sunday and leaving the US with a 1-1 record. They looked much fitter then they (reportedly) did against Chicago, so I guess they adapted to the air quicker than I hoped they would.

The turnout was good (about the same as any other midseason Rapids game) and was surprisingly non-Everton.

Elder Olsen to make his debut?

2

Everyone knows Ben Olsen. One of the most popular players on the team since his rookie year in 1998, the tenacious midfielder has already cemented himself in United history as one of the best. You may not, however, know his older brother Jeremy.

Best by injuries in recent weeks, United's coaching staff has called upon the elder Olsen - who has been in D.

There has been a lot of news about MLS expansion floating around and I havent' written much on it because I've been sort of saving some of my thoughts for my PE column. Superliga is back! The semifinals kick off tonight at 10pm eastern and you can watch the games here in English. And view the Semifinals scoreboard here.

How appropriate that we'd receive a pretty good Superliga rumor. We call this good due to the fact that we like it and hope that it happens, not that we think it is probable. Click to continue reading...

Whaddayathink?

Someone is working on a U.S. Soccer project (it's not the federation, it's a scholarly venture), focusing on the men's team and sent me a list of questions, wanting my perspective. I know what I think, and usually people don't have to ask twice for my opinion, but I'm well aware that there's a world of different thoughts out there. Click to continue reading...
