It's one of the more pointless awards MLS hands out, but for what it's worth the reigning MLS
Goalkeeper of the Year beat out the Chicago Fire's Brian McBride (who may have stopped playing in
MLS, but never stopped playing excellent attacking soccer - is he available next year in South
Africa?) and D.

The second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs has the two higher seeds in each conference hosting
their opponents from last week's match-ups. In the four matches from last week, the home teams
either tied or won leaving the seeded favorites with work to do if they hope to advance to the
conference finals.

Can there ever be too much soccer to watch? Okay, probably not, but this weekend's slate of
soccer on TV is about as loaded as any weekend a soccer fan could hope for.
The list is enormous, with marquee tilts in England, Italy, France and MLS. Want rivalries? How
about Manchester United vs.

After getting a well-deserved week off to rest their legs, the Fire came into tonight's match
against Real Salt Lake ready to start the final two months of the season with yet another road win.
And while at times it looked like the Fire would be able to pick up all three points at Rio Tinto
Stadium, in the end it wasn't to be, and the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.

(Left over from a few conversations with the Crew for a story that has not yet run. Don't worry --
they're off this weekend, so they'll still have a five-game win streak and eight-game unbeaten
streak in MLS play.)
Do the Columbus Crew play a more direct style when
Guillermo Barros Schelotto
isn't in the lineup?

Goal.com is reporting that Freddy Adu is looking to move to Holland. He confirmed that coach
Jorge Jesus told him that he no longer factors into Benfica's plans. Adu said that the Eredivisie
is his top-choice league, and he would be content even to join a smaller club, citing Groningen and
NAC, in particular.

The underwhelming start for MLS teams in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League has to remind some
fans of last season's poor showing, when Chivas USA was eliminated by Panamanian side Tauro FC and
Joe Public embarrassed the New England Revolution. With Toronto FC, DC United, and the New York Red
Bulls all failing to pick up wins in the opening leg of the competition's preliminary round, all
three could easily see their Champions League hopes dashed by this time next week.

Roger Levesque scored a diving header just 49 seconds into the match as Seattle Sounders FC
defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 in their U.S. Open Cup third-round match Wednesday at a sold-out
PGE Park.
Â
An outstanding display of attacking soccer from the opening whistle, capped by Levesque's
stunner, staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead after 26 minutes.

I was watching in pure amazement (and joy) during the first half of the Confederations Cup final as
the USA played aggressive and attacking soccer. Well, as attacking as you can against a talented
side like Brazil. The Americans certainly were not content to lay back, but instead took the game
to the Brazilians.

Some teams are easy to hate, but some teams are just so good at what they do that you can only
admire them.
Spain is one of those teams.
Playing a beautiful brand of skillful and deadly attacking soccer, the Spanish have been on an
absolute tear over the past two years as a golden generation of stars came together to form a team
for the ages.

Thank God, the Rapids players and coaches must be thinking this week as they prepare for the first
of nine matches out of 12 at home tomorrow against Christian Gomez and DC United. After a lengthy
stay on the road in the opening games of the season, the Rapids look to set the tone tomorrow night
for the home games going forward.

We'll admit that we have never been Bob Bradley's biggest fans, but we've also tried to refrain
from calling for his head. That was until the Brazil match. Given the US's performances over
the past few weeks, it has become doubtlessly clear that our current coach is not the man for the
job.

Last week's ranking is in parentheses.
1. Houston Dynamo (1)
There should be no debate over this choice: Houston is in fine form right now and deserves the #1
spot in everyone's power rankings. In their last nine games, the Dynamo are 8-0-1 and have
outscored opponents 16-3 in that span.

To the international games or just home messing with the Xbox, that's where. Absences due to either
call-ups or the sudden abundance of red cards are going to affect more than one game in MLS this
weekend. I long for the day when MLS is mature enough of a league to suspend play due to the
former, but I am told that is not where we are, so fortune will have to favor the deep benches.

TORONTO, Canada (May 25, 2009) – The U.S. Women's National Team scored twice in each half,
getting goals from four different players to defeat Canada 4-0 in front of 10,255 fans at BMO
Field. It was the USA's first match in Canada since 2001.
Midfielder Shannon Boxx opened the scoring just 93 seconds into the match and midfielder Megan
Rapinoe added a second just before the halftime.

WOULD YOU WEAR THIS JERSEY?
The defenders converge on Messi as he runs toward goal, but their efforts are futile. Â The
defenders' quick feet move to tackle the ball, but Messi's feet are quicker, and with a dozen
slight but perfectly timed touches at speed he threads cleanly through the defensive thicket until
there is only an open net before him.

Even George Steinbrenner in his heydays could never match Ramon Calderon in his contemptuous
disregard of managers. Exhibit A is Fabio Capello who actually won them the Liga in 2007 after
Fiorentina Perez's expensive set of superstars went three seasons without a title. The Italian with
his unimaginative style but effective style of soccer was fired even as Juande Ramos, the present
coach emulates his approach.

Everyone got their breath back? The final whistle blew almost 24 hours ago and I can't seem to
shake this game out of my mind. The image of
Mehdi Ballouchy's fantastic cross
onto
Conor Casey's outstretched boot in the final minutes of the game remains
largely fixed. It was not that the defenses were so poor on both sides.

In the comedy series "Little Britain", Andy Pipkin, the pretend-disabled scrounger,
states that he wants to go to Finland despite the fact that he previously said that the country had

that he actually wanted to go to Florida all the time.

What does a match between two last place teams look like? It looks like what we saw on
Sunday in San Jose. The Earthquakes dominated play but couldn't finish while the Red Bulls looked
absolutely awful in a 4-5-1 that set attacking soccer back about 10 years.
The performance would have been consider promising for San Jose if not for the huge mountain
still to climb in the West standings.

The Chicago Fire still hasn't won an MLS match in a month, so you would think a road point
against the Columbus Crew would be a moral victory of sorts.
Well, it wasn't. Not when Chicago held a two-goal lead early on and looked like it might
find that long-awaited victory.

On the strength of a stingy defense, quick and skillful midfield and a wonderful finish from
Fernando Torres, Spain is the new European Champion.
It was definitely refreshing to watch a team win a tournament by playing beautiful attacking
soccer and not by turning the game into a defensive-oriented bore-fest.

I have tears of joy. Watching Spain get over their mental block against their more heralded
European rivals, doing it their way, playing beautiful, attacking soccer and finally winning what
was rightfully theirs. There is a God occasionally and he chose the right time to be
munificent.
There was Ballack his face streaked with congealed blood and the nonplussed Metzelder and
Mertesacker, their faces frozen in disbelief and dismay, as they contemplated another championship
without a title.

Watching the Columbus Crew and Los Angeles Galaxy do battle it last Saturday it was tough to
believe that both these teams missed the playoffs last year. The Crew and Galaxy have boasted
exciting attacking soccer this year and they both look to have the firepower to reach the
post-season in 2008.

I don't want to jinx anything, but so far, Euro 2008 has been the greatest soccer tournament I've
ever seen. Attacking soccer is winning and teams have been rewarded for going forward and not for
sitting back. Hopefully this trend continues on into the knockout round, otherwise, my picks are
going to be completely wrong.
